20.01.2022 Day 3: Don’t compare yourself to others We each have our own unique voice and there is no other YOU! Why would we want two of the same voices? Tell yourself that you have a different style, a different voice, and a different gift. Only you have this gift so be proud of that. I described it the other day to someone like bringing a food platter to a party. It might not be the delicious chocolate cake someone else brought, but we needed the salad that you prepared! On the... concert day you will see that everyone has something different to bring to the stage. Rather than comparing, being jealous, or feeling no good, we should take delight in their song and their voice, just like someone might be feeling that about your voice and presence! People have different tastes - there will of course be someone watching you that day that enjoys your performance and others that will like someone else’s. But I am so grateful for you, because you are making that evening special with what you bring to the stage that nobody else can! Think of it like a mould that only you can fill, so you want to start honing your skills, finding your purpose and developing your style.

14.01.2022 Day 4: Rehearse / Warm up Only 2 more days until our concert! This is the time to rehearse your song like you are performing in front of an audience. Sing through your song and record / film yourself. What do you like about your performance and stage presence? What would you like to work on? Make little tweaks now as there are only 2 more days! One thing that stood out to me from my choir teacher in high school was, if you haven’t memorised your part the night before yo...u probably won’t get it on the day. As harsh as it sounded, in my experience, it’s so true! So make sure you don’t make any mistakes today and you should be good to go! Now is the time to just run through as it is. Even if you make a mistake, keep going as you will need to see how you respond to mistakes in your rehearsal, in preparation for the performance day. If there is a tricky part in your song, write out a little warm up routine for the concert day. Start with your favourite vocal warm up. Go over a tricky part in your song - either the melody notes or the vocal tone just to give you confidence that you can do it. Go over notes from your teacher that helped you with tricky sections. If there is a line you always forget try singing that over a few times. If you forget where to enter in the verse, try counting the beats and practice a few times on the day. Make sure you are feeling warmed up and ready but save your voice for the performance! Visualise yourself on stage hitting that note comfortably or singing that line without any mistakes. All the best!

09.01.2022 Day 1: Memorising Lyrics Our students at A Major Music Academy are preparing for our student concert on Saturday. Many people are finding it hard to memorise lyrics and I know how hard it can be! Sing the words to your song in your head now. Did you get stuck on any part? Chances are you might forget that on the day, so focus on those parts now and try to sort it out and make peace with the section you are having trouble with.... Surround yourself with the song, and sort it out in your head. What sections are you having difficulty with? Sing it in a funny accent, act it out, recite it like you are acting out a play. Write it out before bed, sing it on the way to the bus stop. Come up with choreography to really internalise it. Understand the story! Do you actually know what you are singing? Try to connect emotionally with it, make your own associations and interpretation. Organise different sections in your head. What is the starting line of verse one and verse two? Once you get the starting lines you should be fine from there. Singing requires some multitasking. As you are singing the end of your first chorus, remind yourself to start thinking in your head what the next starting line is so you are prepared! Are you a visual learner? Write the lyrics out without any mistakes. On the day of your performance, you might remember the ink of your pen while you were writing out verse two! Keep it fresh! Learn another song this week and come back to your concert piece. Sometimes moving on can help you get unstuck. Happy memorising!

09.01.2022 Day 2: Stage presence - Challenge yourself with 1 thing Do you have any nervous habits? We all do something when we are nervous, to feel secure or hide behind. Try to be mindful of your tendency, and try to avoid it. Be courageous! Most of us have done the singing with the hairbrush in front of the mirror haven’t we?! (I still do!) My rule is, try to feel as comfortable on stage as you are while singing alone in your room. This might take a few performances to actually... feel somewhat comfortable but take this opportunity to work towards that now! So what is it that you do when you are by yourself singing? Do you move your head to one side? Do you close your eyes? Do you sway from side to side? Do you use your hands, or make expressions with your face? Ask someone if they know what is unique about you when you sing or tell a story at home, Whatever that is bring that out on stage! We are all so unique, and move and express ourselves differently. Sometimes we have to exaggerate it a little because we may think we are doing such big movements but really nobody even notices, so try to amplify this but still being natural and be YOU! Challenge yourself with at least one thing on the day, and remind yourself right before you get up on stage. It could be as simple as I won’t put my hand behind my back on stage, I want to hit that high note with confidence, I want to extend my hand out on that line like I do at home, or I want to relax my shoulders''. Then you get to challenge yourself with something new in your next performance. So, what do you do when you feel most free and comfortable singing by yourself? Try to sing and do this in front of someone else and then bring it out on stage!
