16.01.2022 Yeah she’s pretty but why do they put her in that stupid haircut? I want a poodle but their haircut looks dumb I’ve heard it all before, so today with the p...oodle in the spotlight I wanted to take a minute and explain that ‘goofy looking’ haircut. Like all breed standard trims on all purebred dogs the poodle trim you see here has its roots in history. Believe it or not, before they became the wonderful pets you know today Standard Poodles originated as hunting dogs retrieving birds from water in Germany in the late 16th century. Poodle translates to the German word Pudel which means ‘to splash’. The ancestors of today’s poodles had the same thick, heavy coats that our pets still have and for fear of them sinking in the water because of the weight their owners would shave off all ‘non essential’ hair leaving coat in strategic areas to protect joints and organs. The big floofy jacket on the front half of them? That’s to protect their heart and lungs from the cold. The pompoms on the hips? Those protected the kidneys. The poms on the ankles? They protect the ankle joints. The shaved feet? That exposes the webbed toes making swimming easier. The shaved face? That enables the dogs to see and grab downed birds without obstruction. The Pom on the tail? That acts as a rudder as they swim. The bow used to tie up their hair on top of their head? It serves 2 purposes, one is to keep the hair out of the eyes, the other is for identification from a distance. Different hunters would use different colored scraps of cloth so they knew which dog was there’s from the shore. Through the centuries the cut has definitely become more elaborate and evolved into what you see in the ring today but it like all other breeds signature styles has its reasons in history and they are groomed this way for show to celebrate that rich history. So there you have it! Congratulations to the gorgeous black Standard Poodle Siba for winning Best in Show at Westminster last night!! *Please share directly from here and do not copy/paste and claim as your own*

11.01.2022 My first attempt at modeling a poodle One of my dirty little secrets is I'm an avid collector of anything poodle, another is that I'm artsy and crafty, another is that I can't handle not keeping busy.. I borrowed some of my daughters modeling clay this arvo, to practice before i try and make one from polymer clay, which bakes and sets hard. Unfortunately Pinky here didn't make it.. We can either blame Corona, or Carole Baskin

08.01.2022 Most of the world is currently experiencing some level of social distancing or isolation at the moment.. but have you just acquired a new puppy? Here are 7 are...as of puppy raising that will be impacted SOCIALISATION - ‘Social distancing’ may actually work in your puppy’s favour. This allows you to take your puppy for walks, absorbing the world from a reasonable distance without them being overwhelmed, smothered by cuddles or going into a socially arousing flap at the sight of every many and his dog. Isolation is a little more difficult: Anyone that comes to your home needs to meet your puppy; a friend, family member, delivery guy, postman. Even if they just fling a treat from a distance! Play dress ups! Don that Batman suit, wig, cowboy hat, trench coat, hi-vis shirt, walking stick and pram you have hiding away in the cupboard and allow your puppy to experience different characters. Get creative! Just go about each day dressed in a new outfit. Experiment with different accents and personalities if you feel compelled. #methodactor BUILDING INDEPENDENCE- Puppies are highly social creatures and need to learn, through small successions, how to feel comfortable being left alone. Being in lock down, means you have a great opportunity to build their confidence through gradual increments of alone time. Set up a puppy pen or a crate and ensure they have periods throughout the day where they are experiencing being separate from you. Stay nearby to begin with and then work towards leaving the room. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you spend the next few weeks/months with your puppy attached to you every minute of the day, I can promise you now, your puppy will suffer severely when you do need to return to work/school. THE LEAD - It will be very easy to completely forget about putting your puppy on lead if you are never venturing outside. But this will produce a problem down the track when the isolation period lifts and you eventually do decide to go for a walk. Practice all training on lead in the home. Sit, drop, stay etc. this will begin to form a positive association to the lead. Put your pup on lead occasionally and go for a walk around the back yard. Keep the lead loose and let them just explore. After you’ve gone for a walk, practice the ‘Cafe Dog’ exercise over a cuppa by tying your puppy’s lead to your chair the same way you would at a cafe. Allow them to experience settling and sleeping underneath you. TIME - Something you may have a lot more of if you are self isolating. And boy oh boy does a new puppy do better if you have the time to invest in them in the early days! Time to enrich, time to play, time to train, time to practise rest and crate time! Use this time wisely to prepare for when you don’t have a lot of time down the track! CONFIDENCE BUILDING - Sit down with your family tonight, brainstorm and write down everything you would like your puppy to be familiar with and relaxed around as an adult; balls, bikes, skateboards, postman, water, cars etc. Now get creative again! Think of ways you can bring all these things into your home so your puppy can experience them during the isolation period. If you are struggling to bring a car into your living room, And it’s safe to do so, go and sit on your nature strip, walk up and down your street or venture to an empty park. SOUNDS - Down load the Sound Proof Puppy Training App and start desensitising your pup to all the weird and wacky noises our world has to offer. PUPPY SCHOOL - A must! We are part of a large and brilliant community of dog trainers that care so much for the wellbeing of your newest family member and are already preparing to take our classes online should it reach that point. Until then, wash your hands before class, maintain social distancing and use hand sanitiser between exercises. Most clinics and spaces are taking extra hygiene precautions as well. Puppies have a critical learning period up to 16 weeks of age and it’s important to start all their training during this time. Contact your local, reputable puppy trainer for alternative arrangements for pre school during this time. 06.01.2022 Oooh this is so my style

05.01.2022 UPDATE! YES! Dog Groomers are still open! But I have a few updates. We must be practicing social distancing and cleanliness. I cannot stress enough that if you are feeling unwell, please reschedule your appointment!... If you prefer not to carry and handle cash at the moment, please let me know and I'll provide you with my bank transfer details. There is still talk about "stage 2" lock down happening, and possibly happening as soon as next week - this may include groomers. If you have a fluffy dog you may need to get them clipped sooner then later to be safe, as fluffys who can not be clipped for many months will become matted and cause pain, skin problems and feel very uncomfortable! If we all try our best to stop the spread we will get back to normal life as soon as possible. Stay safe and healthy and spend some quality time with your dog xx

01.01.2022 This is something everyone should see. When you get your 8/10 week old puppies, please keep this image in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod a...round so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet. When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited, bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in. But when you're letting puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile wit no traction you are damaging the joint. You only get the change to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one. Once grown you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once. This is a baby puppy who had a knock to his elbow and wasn't using it properly. There is nothing wrong in these x-rays, thankfully it is a soft tissue injury and he is expected to be fine.
