25.01.2022 I recently took my 13 year old niece, my daughter, my two nephews and my sister to the Operation Ouch Live On Stage Show in Perth. Well, if Im honest, I pretended I was taking them, but really, they took me! Im a huge Operation ouch groupie and used to love watching their TV show with my daughter. What can I say? I love science and gross stuff! They did cool things like popping a camera on a thin cord into Dr Xan's ear, up his nose and into his mouth! ... Who wouldnt love that? Or am I just weird? Do yourself a favour and check out these hilarious doctors take on everyday topics. 24.01.2022 Happy Friday everyone! Weve made it through another week. This morning I was invited to present to Network South West Business Club members about the #Coronavirus and what businesses can do to safeguard their environment. Although I primarily work with dental practices in my role as an Infection Control Consultant, Im also broadening my scope now to also support other service providers whod like me to take a look at their current infection control measures and make recom...mendations on the products and processes they can use to safeguard themselves, their staff and clients. Please drop me a line or reach out via my website if youd like me to do an infection control audit at your premises and ensure your staff have up to date information from reliable sources. www.amalgamate.com.au Were all in this together which means well all get through this together as well. If you have any specific concerns or questions, post them below so I can give you some clarity on what youre experiencing. - Dr. Roslyn Franklin

24.01.2022 When it comes to building our knowledge of Covid-19 it's vital that you get your information from specialists in the field and not a mate who knows a bloke who knows a person who heard something. COVID-19 is not simply a common cold. If you need reminding what the symptoms of COVID-19 are, check out this handy infographic from the The Spinoff. Please feel free to share this infographic because, even if only one person takes it on board, that could still save lives.

20.01.2022 Medical dictionaries may be happy to include Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Legionella species and Non-tuberculous mycobacterium, but one place they should never be found is in your patients mouths. The small tubes that provide water for dental procedures, such as fillings and crowns, can provide a haven for disease-causing bacteria to flourish. You can halt their entry into your patients mouths by making sure your waterlines are tested and maintained according Australian guidelin...es, recommendations and your dental chair manufacturers instructions. Please contact me for a consult to assess whether your waterlines are clean as a whistle, or party central for bacteria. www.amalgamate.com.au

18.01.2022 **Don't be fooled!!** The CDC has warned there are fake N95 respirators being sold. Just another 'thing' to watch out for which makes me sad. https://www.cdc.gov//npptl/usernotices/counterfeitResp.html

18.01.2022 Guess what I did last week? I got to meet a fungi fun guy? Get it? Fungi Hmmm, ok, back to my day job! Well actually, if were going to be specific, it was a fun girl! (ok Ill stop now!) Anyway, last week I got to have a look around PathWest's Environmental Microbiology Unit where they test, not only the samples from dental waterlines, but all the Water Corporation samples as well. ... It was really fascinating and makes me want to dig out all my old microbiology textbooks and revise the world of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoans! Senior Scientist in Charge, Sandra Sjollema and her colleague Ingrid, gave me a tour of the lab and the run down on what they do. So, when a dental unit waterline sample comes in, they add 0.1 mL each one to its own petrie dish, incubate it and see how many colonies grow. While I was there, Ingrid showed me a number of cultured petrie dishes. This photo is of one of those dishes. I had a look under the microscope and there were so many colonies they couldnt count them all. This dish is not a good result! There is a plus side though. My love of all thing microbial means that I can teach you and your staff how to make sure Path West wont be growing anything nasty like this on your petrie dishes. Get in contact if youd like more information. www.amalgamate.com.au

14.01.2022 Hand hygiene is something we're all taught as children, but how many of us take the time to really analyse how effective we are at it? It's easy to become complacent, just as members of the Network South West Business Club discovered. I applied an illumination gel to their hands and then instructed them to use the bathroom to thoroughly wash it all off and dry their hands well. Then, under an ultraviolet light they got to see how ignorance is not bliss. Very few partici...pants, despite their best efforts, managed to wash their hands well enough to remove all the gel. While the meeting was conducted in accordance with social distancing, I did get in closer proximity for this exercise, however everyone's hands were sanitised prior to the brief moment we shared. Areas of concern (you'll see them glowing) were around fingernails, in between fingers and the sides of hands. So, next time you apply hand soap, take a little extra time and do it mindfully. If you'd like any support on increasing your infection control measures, please contact me. www.amalgamate.com.au

11.01.2022 Huge thanks to Rosey for her kind words. I really enjoyed my time with her at Mosman Park Orthodontics. Testament to their commitment to offer their patients the absolute best environment, Mosman Park Orthodontics employed me again after that review, to do an infection control audit and training session at the end of last year. But thats not all. Now theyve asked me back to help with their re-accreditation process. 07.01.2022 My goodness! Planning is everything! From training yourself to training your staff, to making sure everyone is prepared for each change in level practice restrictions (but getting your head around it first! ) to clarifying (and maybe failing? ) what masks to wear, when and how, to patient screening, to added practice cleaning regimes, to teledentisry and the list goes on! My hat's off to all my fellow dental colleagues. In a way I have the easier time. I'm busy keeping ...on top of all the latest and greatest in infection prevention and control. Watched some great webinars and reading heaps from the ADA, CDC, WHO, ACICP, and many other.s But they keep coming and the published literature keeps increasing! I'm thinking tonight I will watch the new movie 'Emma' and switch off for a little while! I'll be refreshed tomorrow! Anyone else watched a great, relaxing, not-too intense movie recently?
