22.01.2022 Top of my destination travel list... About halfway between Perth and Sri Lanka, in the Indian Ocean, is The Cocos Keeling Islands, Australia's furthermost external territory. 21.01.2022 From the archives... One of the best trips we have done - Mt Bromo, East Java, Indonesia. We had one of the best guides we have ever met on this trip, Esnawan Aloysius from Nathan Tour and Travel whose local knowledge is second to none, having been born nearby in Yogyakarta.... The landscape here is amazing. The volcanic dust makes it look like the surface of some strange planet. This is definitely a trip we want to do again. . . . 21.01.2022 White people going rogue... Holi Festival in Rajasthan has been hijacked by wealthy white seniors determined to go on one last alcohol-fuelled bender before they kick the bucket. I had read about such tours but had put it down to urban myth... but sadly it's true.... We were at a quiet roadside restaurant, peacefully wandering the beautiful Rajasthani inspired gardens when the first bus load of booze soaked grey nomads arrived. It wasn't yet 10am. And then the music started... . . 20.01.2022 A few years ago my beautiful wife and creator of Beautifully Bound Leather Sully Brayshaw did the most amazing photo-shoot. 11.01.2022 Today is World Wetlands Day. And yes, you can make a difference. Take a look at the photo of Mrs Beard kayaking. Then check out the maps to see where we are... Right in the middle of Southport! The ecosystem, as tiny as it is, is incredible in there. But it depends on you to do the right thing. So don't dump chemicals in your gutter and be mindful of what you use to spray weeds and pests. Every year this day helps raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for pe...ople and our planet. But this year is even more special, because it marks the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Ramsar wetlands are vital bird breeding and feeding sites in Australia and include the Coorong in South Australia, Eighty Mile beach in Broome and Moreton Bay (including Toondah Harbour) in Queensland. With wetlands globally under increasing pressure from development, climate change and other threats, it is more important than ever to recognise the value of these unique ecosystems, big and small. With your help, these special places will take to social media to make wetlands visible and demand for stronger protection for our birds and their wetlands. #WorldWetlandsDay #RespectRamsar . . 06.01.2022 This is amazing.... Who knew that there was a Long-beaked Echidna? Extinct in Australia for a few thousand years now, the only one's still alive are in the highlands in Papua New Guinea. These gentle creatures of the night have quietly walked and burrowed the rain-forest floor for millennia. They’ve already survived one major mass extinction the meteor strike that eliminated the dinosaurs 65-million years ago. Now, with their numbers much diminished, they inhabit a last str...onghold in New Guinea. With the latest mass extinction underway, they are being reduced to even smaller refugia in the most isolated and rugged parts of that island. The oldest living mammal on earth, echidna's are between 20 and 50 million years old! Thankfully innovative local and international partnerships in PNG could help rescue them from extinction.

05.01.2022 Black Swan Lake - update September 2020. My long-term followers will know of the saga of Black Swan Lake in suburbia on the Gold Coast. We lobbied the local city council for years to save the lake from destruction (filled in for a carpark) without success... :( Below are some before and after (as at 01-Sept-2020) photos of this beautiful piece of urban wilderness, home to some 62 species of wildlife independently verified by ecologists.... I visited the lake once again at 4:00pm, ironically at the exact same time that Council was deciding on the fate of the (small) remaining section of the lake. It was slatted for complete filling and preparation for an over-flow carpark for the local horse racing track. Well, I'm happy to announce, that public opinion swayed Council and in a 6 to 5 vote the last of the lake will be saved and maintained by local government. Chalk one up to people power! . .
