12.01.2022 I wanted to share this amazing experience with you from our trip to the Maldives. The manta rays (Manta Alfredi) feed on the zooplankton which looks like milky water with lots of particle matter. They filter plankton through their gills, using their cephalic lobes as a funnel to increase the amount of food entering their mouths. There are a number of feeding strategies for Manta Rays, when concentration of plankton is high, they can form a ‘single file line’, by co-operating ...they can increase the amount of food ingested, they can also cyclone feed is an incredible and rare phenomenon which can be seen when concentrations of plankton are extremely high, they create huge feeding chains, and start to swim in a spiral creating a vortex to pull the plankton into their open mouths.
