23.01.2022 Releasing a Leopard catshark (Poroderma pantherinum) back into the wild . This species is endemic to the coastal waters of South Africa and is commonly found in inshore waters to 20 m. Leopard sharks are mainly nocturnal, feeding on benthic fish and invertebrates in the shallows. Reproduction is oviparous (egg- laying) and occurs year round. #sharkacademy #sharkscience #marinescience #marinebiologist #marinebiology #WISS #sharkbiology #sharkbiologist #womeninstem #womeninsharkscience #southafrica #SASC #sharkconservancy #sharkscientist
20.01.2022 My first week at the Women in Shark Science scholarship program in Hermanus, South Africa. It’s been an incredible week full of sharks, inspiring women and discovering the beauty of South Africa. I’m loving every minute and can’t wait to see what the next few weeks will bring . . . .... . #sharkacademy #sharkscience #marinescience #marinebiologist #marinebiology #WISS #sharks #sharkbiology #sharkbiologist #SASC #sharkconservancy #sharkscientist #sharkdiver #womeninscience #sharklab See more
19.01.2022 [UPDATE: This is a whale believed to have escaped from Russia's military program. It is NOT a wild whale NOR is this natural behaviour NOR Is this in Antarctic...a. It's another example of absence of basic fact-checking]. This one makes my head and my heart hurt. Likely you've seen it, the video of a "wild" Beluga playing catch with a rugby ball? Two questions not asked by those reporting and sharing this (1) This is being reported as being in Antarctica but Belugas don't live in Antarctica. (2) This is not natural / spontaneous behaviour. This is a whale habituated to humans and boats which is anything but heart-warming. What I have now learned: "This is a whale from Russia that was trained by the military and then got loose [remember "Hvaldimir" the Beluga found off N. Norway with a harness marked Equipment of St Petersburgin April 2019] . . . . . they should know better than playing around with a beluga and trying to make it seem like they’re out to play with humans . . . Shame on them and the girl who spread it around. I don’t know why people don’t research things more before they share things." Source: Colleen Gorman. Likely Hvaldimir's training would have included being rewarded with food when retrieving objects. Further update November 9th and it is surprising and verified. The boat in the video, a "Gemini" (made in Cape Town, South Africa), is the tender for the vessel "The Danah Explorer". Danah Divers, are a research body linked to the Save Our Seas Foundation. There is email correspondence to the Department of Fisheries in Norway apologizing for recent misguided behaviour while in Northern Norway and yet this video gets into the world. These actions perpetuate habituation of the whale and reduce his chances to feed for himself and are contrary to Norwegian efforts to rehabilitate the whale. The identity of the person initially throwing the ball is known but I am choosing not to post the name. I found one Norwegian news item that reported that Hvaldimir was malnourished (but now is apparently doing better) and has been hit by a boat at least once. I have now bundled the information about the misinformation at this link, which allows me to better provide sources and updates. https://themarinedetective.com//wild-whales-dont-play-rugby #Hvaldimir #nobelugasinantarctica #FactChecked #WildWhalesDontPlayRugby
18.01.2022 How to do a shark work-up.... Measure total length (TL), precaudal length (PCL) and interdorsal length (IDL). Tag, sex and weigh the shark. Take a fin clip for genetic testing. Release #sharkacademy #sharkscience #marinescience #marinebiologist #marinebiology #WISS #perthgirlboss #sciencecomm #womeninscience #sharklab
18.01.2022 A new species of American pocket shark has been identified; The 14 cm-long Mollisquama mississippiensis. They also glow in the dark
16.01.2022 Not all aquariums were created equal... Going on a behind the scenes tour at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town was eye opening for me. They have an incredibly strong emphasis on rehabilitation and conservation, with many animals being released back into the wild. Their northern rockhopper penguins were found stranded on southern Cape beaches and rehabilitated back to great health. They cannot be released because of the risk of introducing diseases into wild populations, but rest assured, they are well taken care of. Also, each turtle receives a vegetable and jelly cake for their birthday #sharkacademy #sharkscience #WISS #sharkbiology #sharkbiologist #womeninstem #womeninsharkscience #southafrica #sharkconservancy #sharkscientist

16.01.2022 Another day of shark tagging
13.01.2022 The dark shyshark (Haploblepharus pictus) belongs to the family Scyliorhinidae and is endemic to the temperate waters of Namibia and South Africa. It is benthic in nature and inhabits shallow, inshore waters, favouring rocky reefs and kelp forests. When it feels threatened it covers its head with its tail to hide. The shark was tagged, measured, sexed, genetically sampled and released #womeninstem #womeninsharkscience #southafrica #darkshyshark #catsharkspecies #shyshark #womeninscience

13.01.2022 A hybrid leopard/ pyjama shark. It has the spots of a leopard and and the stripes of a pyjama, the head is also slightly enlarged. The shark was tagged, measured, sexed, genetically sampled and released Hannah Rudd #sharkacademy #sharkscience #marinescience #marinebiologist #marinebiology #sharkbiology #sharkbiologist #womeninstem #womeninsharkscience #hybrid #sharktagging
13.01.2022 Pyjama shark (Poroderma africanum) egg case The second day in the SASC lab saw us looking at egg cases and baby sharks. Reproduction in sharks is varied and ...not like other fish. Males have two organs called claspers attached to their anal fins. When mating they will insert one of them into the females cloaca to transfer the sperm that will fertilize the eggs. Sharks and rays are viviparous, oviparous or ovoviviparous. Oviparous reproduction is used by about 30 % of sharks and rays in the world and is when young are produced by means of eggs which are hatched after they have been laid by the parent. Viviparous reproduction is when sharks and rays give birth to live young, just like mammals. Ovoviviparous is when eggs are produced and hatched within the body, so that the young are born alive but without placental attachment #womeninSTEM #womeninsharkscience #SASC #sharkacademy #sharkscience #sharkconservancy #sharksareawesome #sharkreproduction See more

05.01.2022 I’m extremely thrilled and humbled to be appointed onto the board for the Australian Biome Project. I have no doubt that this project has the ability to change the face of tourism in WA and the potential to showcase the region in a way not yet seen in Australia. I have some excited visions for the Ocean Biome that I can’t wait to share with you all along the way
