25.01.2022 Sugar & your immune system I hate to break it to you, but did you know that consuming approx. 100gm of refined sugar (glucose) can disable your immune system by 75% for at least 6-8hrs. So when you are continually having refined sugar in your diet, your immune system has a reduced capacity to fight off any nasties Glucose is almost molecularly identically to ascorbic acid (Vit C) and when you consume a sugary meal or snack, your white blood cells (immune army), don’t... know they can’t use glucose the same way as ascorbic acid. The glucose is then taken up preferentially when blood glucose is high (post sugar meal/snack) What does this mean? Refined sugars (added sugars, cakes, skim milk, chocolate, soft drink etc) are doing your body a disservice and impacting your immune army. When we limit intake of these foods & drinks we can support the function of our immune system with fresh whole fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, good fats. Be conscious about what you eat and how frequently. You can enjoy the sweeter things, just in moderation. Our body knows what to do when given the right support #immunehealth #sugar #naturalmedicine #foodasmedicine #healthylife #naturopath #goldcoast #brisbane #wholefoods #virus #nasties
24.01.2022 When we have busy lives, we can often struggle to find the time to cook. But I wanted to give you a few of my tips on ways to make it easier for you. By the way, good food doesn’t need to take very long either! Meal plan for the week - that way you know what you’re having each night and what ingredients you’re going to need when you do the groceries - If you have older kids, get them to choose a meal that they can make for the family! Think about meals you can make in bulk ...like Bolognese, curry, quiche, stew, lasagne, soup or even roasted veggies - that way you can portion it out and fridge/freeze for easy reheating or for emergencies when you’re short on time. Spend half a day prepping meals, chopping up veggies that you’ll use through the week, that way you can just grab out what you want, saving you time. Pre-cook protein that you might use like chicken and freeze it into portions so its easy to add to your dish and saves you time. Hard boil some eggs so you’ve got easy to grab snacks! If you’ve got lemons/limes to use squeeze them into ice trays so you can grab a cube of juice when you need and don’t forget that delicious zest! Great to add with chicken, potato or in a cake! Whilst the thought of prepping meals and cutting veg might not sound like a half day well spent for some people, think of the time that can save you after a day at work! It gives you extra time to exercise, relax or spend with loved ones. By planning your week it also takes the stress out of what to cook! What things do you and your family do to help save time in the kitchen? #nutrition #mealprep #foodhacks #healthyliving #naturalmedicine #foodasmedicine #brisbane #goldcoast #iso #isolation #foodie
23.01.2022 Hummus! This delicious snack/condiment is super easy, cheap & quick to make. Hummus is a chickpea dip that is high in protein - chickpeas have about 19g per 100g I recommend this to most of my patients as a great snack option as you can have it on some good quality toast with eggs, add it to your salads or use it as a dip for vege sticks! I’m not a recipe follower when it comes to making it, as I taste as I’m making it, but I use; ... Chickpeas Olive oil Garlic Tahini (ground sesame seeds- great for calcium!) Fresh Lemon juice Salt & pepper Dash of water for smoother consistency - optional. Mixed Moroccan spices Blend it all together in a food processor and store it in the fridge for a few days Have you made it? 22.01.2022 SELENIUM FOR IMMUNE SUPPORT The humble Brazil nut often finds itself being picked last after its rivals cashews, almonds and peanuts ....but did you know it’s a winner when it comes to selenium! Yep! Selenium is a big player when it comes to your immune system because it is an essential co-factor for glutathione peroxidase, an enzyme important in limiting oxidative stress in the host - thereby reducing inflammation and viral attachment. pretty cool hey! *plus way more a...wesome & vital things selenium does in your body .. for another time. 22.01.2022 Considering giving up the booze this month? Here are some reasons that might entice you to give it a try; Brain - Alcohol crosses the blood brain barrier and can increase the permeability which, in turn, increases the influx of peripheral toxins into the brain (illicit drugs and some prescription medications also do this). Heart - Binge drinking or heavy drinking over a long time can cause cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias (irregular heart beat), stroke and elevated blood pr...essure. Liver - This organ takes a heavy burden from detoxing alcohol & can cause fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, fibrosis and cirrhosis. Pancreas - Alcohol causes the pancreas to produce toxic substances that can lead to pancreatitis. Cancer - There is extensive research on the association between heavy alcohol consumption & several types of cancer including head & neck, oesophageal, liver, breast & colorectal cancer. Immune system - Chronic drinkers are more likely to contract pneumonia as alcohol can weaken your immune system & slow’s your body’s ability to fight off infections. Money - you will no doubt save quite a few $$ which you can put towards self-care treatments like massage, saunas, facials, holiday etc etc So if you are a regular drinker, why not give it a miss this month, or reduce the amount you would normally consume? What’s the longest you have given up the drink? What benefits have you noticed?
22.01.2022 Vitamin D doesn’t always get as much attention as it deserves. It’s mostly known for its role in bone formation and calcium homeostasis, however, it is also key for modulation of innate and adaptive immunity, such as fighting against bacterial and viral infections Even though we live in a very sunny country, you would be surprised to know that more than 31% of Australian’s are actually deficient, which increases to over 50% in winter months! Vitamin D deficiency may lead ...to high vulnerability against viral infections in the elderly, but also in school children. You can obtain about 5-10% of your vitamin D status through food sources such as: sardines & tuna (wild caught where possible) pasture raised egg yolk shiitake mushrooms You will also find fortified food sources like milk/dairy & some breads, however sticking to naturally containing sources is best Whilst obtaining safe sun exposure , particularly in Summer & Spring, it is worthwhile considering testing your Vitamin D levels with a health care practitioner to ensure your levels are sufficient for the winter season. Supplementation is recommended for those who’s levels fall below guidelines, as well as those that don’t see a lot of sunshine (eg office workers) and people with chronic immune insufficiency. #sunshine #sun #vitaminD #immunehealth #supportyourimmunesystem #health #nature #freshair #naturopath #brisbane #goldcoast #naturalmedicine #natureknowsbest #medicine

20.01.2022 CABBAGE/SAUERKRAUT How beautiful is this cabbage Sauerkraut - fermented cabbage is an amazing staple that needs to get some more attention. Cabbage is actually naturally high in glutamine which can be beneficial for stomach (peptic) ulcers, as well as stabilising intestinal permeability and improving white blood cell activity at the site of injury (just to name a few benefits). Kraut, is a lacto-fermented vegetable and is super easy to make at home - thinly sliced cabbage, ...salt and a 10min rub, pop it in a jar (with all the air out) and let it ferment for 5-14 days. During the fermentation process, ‘live bacteria’ are produced, supporting gut health. Kraut also contains dietary fibre, Vitamins C, K, potassium, phosphorus & calcium If you can get it on your plate a few times a week, your tummy will thank you! See more
19.01.2022 I really love herbal medicine! Nature provides us with so much when you consider that some of the most well known medications were initially derived from plants: e.g. aspirin, sudafed, morphine, digoxin. It’s a wonder that there is still a lot of eyebrow raising when it comes to using herbal medicine ... Have you tried herbal medicine? 18.01.2022 Just because it runs in the family doesn’t mean its inevitable. There are often learned behaviours and coping mechanisms, the same diet patterns, the same social patterns etc. that trigger the ’switch’ on of your genes. So of course it’s going to keep going down the family line if nothing changes ... You can stop the pattern if you want to. All of these aspects (and more) play an important role in your health and how you feel. Speak to your health care practitioner to find out how you can break the cycle.
18.01.2022 The Dirty Dozen & The Clean 15 - This list refers to the highest & lowest concentration of pesticide residues in fruits & vegetables. Sticking to organic or spray-free for at least the 12 listed fruits/vegetables is a good health option for you & your family. Why are pesticides bad for us?... There have been lots of studies showing the toxicity to the human body when ingesting these chemicals. The WHO states ..pesticides are also potentially toxic to humans. They may induce adverse health effects including cancer, effects on reproduction, immune or nervous systems. In 4 separate clinical trials, people who switched from conventional to organic foods saw a rapid reduction in urinary pesticide concentration, improved fertility and birth outcomes, reduced BMI and reduced incidence of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. You can find a full summary of the dirty dozen & clean 15 here https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/summary.php #organic #sprayfree #cleanfood #healthyfood #wellbeing #pesticidefree #naturalmedicine #naturopath #brisbane #goldcoast #foodasmedicine #lifestylechoices #dirtydozen #cleanfifteen #guthealth @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
18.01.2022 A common complaint I see in clinic is bloating after breads & pastas... there could be a number of reasons for this. If you’re not celiac (gluten allergy), then you could have a gluten sensitivity (NCGS), sensitivity to the chemical sprays that are on the grains, gut microbiome imbalance or low stomach acid (digestive fire) to name just a few! If people don’t want to remove wheat or gluten, I often suggest to go for organic sourdough (fermented) breads or look for Italian flo...ur. The Italians still use the ancient grain and it hasn’t been modified like Australian wheat. A lot of people notice a difference switching flours, especially those with European lineage. Good news, Woolworths actually have an organic Italian pasta and it’s just $1.65! If you do suffer bloating, it is worth seeing a health care practitioner to take a detailed history and find the underlining cause of what’s really going on!
15.01.2022 More than 70% of the neurotransmitter serotonin is made in our gut and it helps to regulate mood and social behaviour, appetite, digestion (including bowel movements), sleep, memory and much more! Therefore, it is essential to feed the gut lots of nutrient dense & a variety of different foods. Highly processed foods & sugars can feed the 'bad' bacteria and therefore have an impact on how you feel. Support gut health with prebiotic (which ‘feed’ the good bacteria) rich foo...ds. These include fermented foods & drinks such as sauerkraut, kim chi, coconut water kefir, kombucha, miso soup and including foods like garlic, onion, leeks, artichokes and dandelion greens. 14.01.2022 Hydrotherapy has been used by many civilisations for hundreds of years and there are many therapeutic benefits from them. Contrast showers is one technique that has many benefits; Stimulates vitality Promotes detoxification ... Helps with generalised areas of pain and soreness Supports your immune system, circulation, digestion, elimination and autonomic nervous system balance (great for menopausal hot flushes) How to; Take a hot shower for approx 5min (not your head) followed by a cold rinse 1-2 min. The hot application should always be 3-4 x longer than cold. You must end on cold water, dry off and dress immediately don’t get chilled! Ensure you breathe in before the water contacts the skin and out as the water contacts you. Repeat each time there is a change of temperature. General caution must be used in any condition that reduces skin sensation of temperature or compromises blood flow to the treated area, e.g. diabetes. 11.01.2022 Tummy teas! If you get bloated, cramping, gas or just want a digestive aids, a tea might just be the thing for you! Whilst there are many reasons you may have these symptoms adding a digestive tea like ginger or fennel may help aid the process & prevent these symptoms. Ongoing symptoms like those mentioned are always beat discussed with a health practitioner Have you tried teas to help with digestive symptoms? What’s your favourite?... Bio Concepts
11.01.2022 Rosemary - Rosmarinus officinalis Did you know that it is a cognitive enhancer. In literature and folklore it is an emblem of remembrance. In western herbal medicine we use it as an anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, estrogen modulator and much more! Also amazing on some lamb or roast veggies #lestweforget #anzacday2020 #herbalmedicine #rosemary #memory #naturalmedicine #herbs
09.01.2022 Eat your greens! Some might say boring, but dark green leafy veggies are actually really important for our nutrient requirements. Think, spinach, kale, bok choy, broccoli, Swiss chard, silverbeet You’ll be getting a good source of Iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, Vit A, folate, Vit B’s, zinc, Vit C, manganese and more. This is important because it helps maximise your nutrient consumption and that fuels our body to do all the things it needs to do! They also contain... phytonutrients which are beneficial in reducing inflammation & oxidation in the body The best way to enjoy these types of vegetables are lightly steamed and occasionally raw. Too much heat from cooking destroys the nutrients & eating too much raw can inhibit the calcium absorption of the foods due to their oxalate (antinutrient) content. Balance! If you struggle to eat your greens, try putting a handful of baby spinach in a smoothie or your nachos mix, adding broccoli or silverbeet to bolognese or bok choy shredded into a stir fry How do you love eating your greens? Or how do you hide them in foods? #greens #nutrition #health #wellness #goodmoodfood #diet #wellbeing #naturopath #foodismedicine #fuel #eatwellstaywell #immunehealth #brisbane #goldcoast #lifestyle

07.01.2022 Trouble sleeping? It’s a common complaint at the moment with a lot of stress with our current climate. Here are some of my tips to help you sleep: Calming tea 2 hours before bed - chamomile, lime flowers, passionflower or a specially formulated combination. Hot shower or bath 90min before bed as it regulates your core body temp to help you get to sleep.... Pop on a meditation app (smiling mind, headspace, insight timer), or journal to release the thoughts before bed. Keep a pen & paper by your bed incase you wake in the night with things going around in your head, so you can write them down. Massage some magnesium oil on to your feet at bed or try some light cotton socks. I also prescribe flower essences, herbal tonics and nutritional supplements where necessary. I find flower essences particularly beneficial in calming the thought loops which is often the trigger for insomnia or disrupted sleep. What helps you get to sleep? 04.01.2022 Get Bitter (foods in you). Digestive bitters stimulate the bitter receptors on our tongue, stomach, pancreas & gallbladder. When we consume bitter herbs/foods before, or with a meal, we are promoting the breakdown and absorption of the nutrients we are eating. Our tastebuds have adapted to loving sweet and salty, so bitter foods aren’t as common in the standard diet these days. If you can start to increase these bitter foods, your body will thank you!... Herbs such as: Gentian, Wormwood, Goldenseal and Andrographis. Foods that you can incorporate into your meals include: Dandelion greens Radicchio Rocket Another way to increase nutrient intake is by chewing, (the first step in the digestive process) as it stimulates the vagus nerve, which controls your parasympathetic nervous system (‘Rest & Digest’). So take your time, eat mindfully and get those bitters in you!! #naturalmedicine #naturopath #bitter #digestion #goldcoast #brisbane #healthylifestyle #gratitude #health

01.01.2022 Our mental health is such an important part of everyday life and we often forget to nourish it. Other ways to help include; reducing your social media time and limiting what you watch tv shows/the news can make us feel more anxious, scared etc Getting creative , spending time with family/friends, speaking to a counsellor or psychologist and learning new skills! Flower essences are also super effective and I often make myself mixes to combat certain phases that I’m in and for my patients too! What do you do for your mental health? How do you know when you’ve let it slip? #mentalhealth #happymind #mindset #naturalhealth #naturopathy #psychology #yourbrainmatters #kindness #gratitude #foodasmedicine #wellbeing #foodforthought #goldcoast #brisbane

01.01.2022 Whilst it seems like a simple way to shed kilos, it isn’t that straightforward. All calories are not equal Let’s take 100 calories of broccoli vs 100 calories of ice cream .. I mean broccoli will always win hands down. The phytonutrients, anti oxidant and liver loving compounds will be way better for weight loss than the dairy, sugar/sweeteners and inflammatory affects of the ice cream. So calories are not equal. Diet Coke has 0 calories Coconut water has 57 (250ml)... Yet, diet coke has no nutritional benefit & contains aspartame which can cause digestive issues and inflammation. Coconut water contains magnesium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus & sodium - a hydrating, electrolyte drink. My advise is always; eat WHOLE foods eat REAL foods Reduce your intake of packet foods. Enjoy a treat, but keep it is a treat. 70%+ dark chocolate is a good place to start When you eat REAL & WHOLE foods, you will feel better. Eat until you are satisfied, but not full. Exercise & stress reduction are also vital components to weight loss, but your diet is the first place to start! You can’t out train a nutrient poor diet.
