25.01.2022 Why did the chicken cross the road?......
23.01.2022 Diabetes can be reversed! And pre-diabetes! And insulin resistance! And fatty liver! And the fat around your waistline!... As these are really just different stages of diabetes! 2020 Australian of The Year, Dr James Muecke has spent 2020 campaigning to get this message out to everyone. See more
23.01.2022 A read of the entire study is good.
23.01.2022 That demented daikon radish is what happens when it self seeds in a very shallow bed. I’ll be turning that into fermented daikon. And the rest is going in tonight’s chicken curry
23.01.2022 Researchers found that a diet rich in fermented foods enhances the diversity of gut microbes and decreases molecular signs of inflammation.
23.01.2022 This is quite interesting. My previous post was on the subject of improving our immune system to help ward off illness. Looks like health professionals finally agree.
23.01.2022 I've been following Dr Hallberg for a while now. She's doing fantastic research into dietary interventions for reversal of Type 2 diabetes & having tremendous success with Virta Health. This is her personal cancer clinical trial journey..... EDIT## She talks about the inequality in trial participants, they are mostly white & healthy!!
22.01.2022 One of the main health subjects I post about are on type 2 diabetes & blood sugar control. Controlling our weight & controlling our blood sugar levels are intricately linked & very achievable. From The Lancet study below.... "Interpretation Deaths in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes rose sharply during the initial COVID-19 pandemic in England. Increased COVID-19-related mortality was associated not only with cardiovascular and renal complications of diabetes but, independently, also with glycaemic control and BMI".
22.01.2022 Some very smart & very basic, simple things we can do to stay healthy.
22.01.2022 Humans & domesticated animals are the only ones who suffer from tooth decay!! Why is it so?
21.01.2022 This is from the USA but they're food trends, subsidies and industrial agriculture practices have a tremendous influence on ours.
21.01.2022 Here's a very good talk on reversing chronic disease. YES it can be done!! It's time we look at the root cause & not merely the symptoms. Chronic diseases also fit into the category of co-morbidities, which we've heard mentioned lately.... As Dr. Chatterjee points out, the process of chronic disease, begins many years or even decades Before a diagnosis is made. It's time to cut these chronic conditions off at the knees & not give then a chance to progress!! My mum died age 72, with a collection of chronic diseases & conditions. She spent the last 10-15 years of her life living a sub-optimal life, feeling like crap, in & out of hospital. On several medications & was affected by several 'side' effects. We may have an extended life expectancy, but the quality of life is pretty poor!! Please watch & share if you feel empowered:)
21.01.2022 No better way to start your weekend than with some relaxing Corona Yoga!
20.01.2022 Been out in the afternoon drizzle picking some greens for a big salad that will last builder Neil & I for several lunches. And I did a lot of slug hunting!!
19.01.2022 Some good old fashioned common sense!!
19.01.2022 When looking at children’s mouths today, I’m seeing more and more helpless parents. This post isn’t to cause a feeling of hopelessness, but to raise our attenti...on to the really important things we can do to help our children. Remember, when milk teeth erupt, there is another set of adult teeth growing and developing underneath the gums. The reality is that teeth really do listen to what happened in our parents and grandparents. So while problems in kids teeth will be stressful, and we may lose the battle, everything we do will help fortify the adult teeth of a child. Don’t lose hope. In the womb, a child is imprinted with signals from its mother’s body. Today we are learning how important ante, prenatal, and postnatal nutrition is to help nourish our next generation. For critical nutrients, like vitamin D, we need to remember, that it is a hormone, and acts deeply on the body, affecting how the DNA will express many years later. Strong teeth and bones, require many years of nourishment from sunlight derived vitamin D. Babies born with vitamin D deficiency may have affected bone growth or in severe cases rickets (flexible bones). Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked with the development of childhood allergy A recent study indicates that children born to mothers with inadequate vitamin D levels had a greater chance of developing early childhood tooth decay. During the study, the vitamin D levels of 206 pregnant women were analyzed during their second trimester. Only 10.5 percent of the women had adequate levels of vitamin D. Of the children born to women with lower levels of vitamin D, 21.6 percent of them had enamel defects, which leave teeth more susceptible to dental cavities. Tooth decay was found in 33.6 percent of the children born to women with the lowest levels of vitamin D. Although most pregnancy multivitamins contain 10 micrograms (400 international units), for women at high risk of vitamin D deficiency this may not be enough and they might benefit from a higher dose supplement. Vitamin D deficiency and dental disease is a strange one. When you think about it logically, it seems very strange that it’s not the FIRST thing that comes to mind when we see decayed teeth, and inflamed gums. The mechanisms Our children need: 1) More sunlight 2) More vitamin D rich foods 3) More animal based fats that help absorption of fat-soluble vitamins We can all start this today! Did you experience vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy?
19.01.2022 Finally some news I can get behind.. and one of the reasons I make an effort to get a good dose of sunshine every single day, all year round. Now is the perfect time to start getting regular exposure, build up your exposure gently every day. The worst thing you can do is stay indoors all week, then go out & get burnt on the weekend in the middle of summer holidays.

18.01.2022 Do you want to the right to know what is in your food? Would you like emulsifiers / glazing agents added to your fresh fruit and veg (even if it is organic) wit...hout your knowledge? The European Union looked at this application and decided that they didn't want it either. They allowed it only on fruits that have hard peels that are usually discarded. It was not permitted on ANY vegetables. We already know that some emulsifiers are linked to damaging our gut health. Do we really know the impact of consuming these manipulated ingredients (and frequently) over the longer term? There hasn't been enough research into the long term impact on our gut health. It is time PEOPLE are put before PROFITS! It is time HEALTH is put before PROFITS! If you want your fruit and veg to be FRESH without any processing aids, take one minute and sign this petition. Then share it with friends and family so that they can have their say. Let's stand up united Additive Free Advocates and say enough is enough. Leave our fresh fruit and veggies alone. 18.01.2022 Personally, balancing my own neck and jaw back pain has been a challenger. Most people today are slouched too far forward, but don’t realize their jaw is contri...buting to their pain issues. Dentistry is a profession that puts the neck at high risk. In the last years I've worked hard to rebalance my neck and back. I’ve found jaw exercises to be a key factor in releasing neck and back pain. Look at the picture above, you see that the jaw joint, if it moves out of balance, will strain one side of the face. If you suffer from headaches or migraines, neck pain or back pain, you may need to balance your jaw joint. Other symptoms may be toothaches, earaches or referred shoulder pain. Although a migraine is severe to moderate pain that you feel at the top or side of your head, the trouble may actually start at the bottom of your skull. Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge that connects your jaw to your skull. Your TMJ allows you to talk, chew and yawn. But the joint’s supporting muscles also can be the source of your migraines. One symptom I see in patients that makes me think of jaw imbalances is poor opening. Difficulties in mouth opening affects individual’s day-to-day activities and even his health. Few studies have been done on effect of different exercises on Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders. However, one looked at Goldfish jaw exercises which are quite effective. If you suffer from headaches and migraines you should try these exercises. The purpose of the exercise is to try to help your TMJ to move in balance, without asymmetry. Here’s the exercise: Here’s the exercise: 1)Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth 2) Place one finger in front of your ear where your TMJ is located (look at the picture) 3) Put your middle or pointer finger on your chin. 4) Open the jaw slowly, you can either do half openings or full openings depending on the range of your jaw 5) Drop down slowly then close. 6) Repeat with opposite side There should be mild resistance but not pain. Do this exercise 5 times per side in one set. Try 1 set x 3 times daily Do you suffer from headaches or neck pain?
17.01.2022 Rob Greenfield is pretty impressive. Look at some of his amazing & inspiring projects! What a great attitude.
16.01.2022 A week or so ago I posted about the Health Minister's blocking tactics in preventing unethical registrations of medications in Australia. There is no greater ex...ample of that than Lyrica - implicated in recent years in suicides as well as intentional and accidental overdoses. It's even routinely screened for in post-mortems in Queensland. Lyrica misuse and over-prescribing was identified years ago. A respected pharmacologist commented "the horse has already bolted!", when asked about better controls. If you are using Lyrica, be careful. Be aware of its adverse effects and its addiction risk. An old University lecturer of mine would have called it a "nasty drug" - a term he used occasionally many, many years ago as new medications were appearing on the Australian market. See more
16.01.2022 To all those snorers out there!! You know who you are! "Snoring is choking in our sleep"
16.01.2022 Insulin resistance, pre diabetes & type 2 diabetes rears its ugly head again!! Keep your blood insulin & blood glucose levels well in check. If you haven't had your fasting insulin checked its a great one to ask your Dr for.
16.01.2022 Hemochromatosis-induced bipolar disorder: a case report "Patient's bipolar symptoms completely subsided after phlebotomic reduction of iron overload..... Clini...cians should explore the possibility of iron overload and seek genetic confirmation of hemochromatosis in resistant bipolar disorder to avoid unnecessary medication." I'm going to interview someone on hemochromatosis for the next anxiety summit - got any questions?
16.01.2022 When you nasal breath your body often shifts between left and right nostril automatically. Each activate different parts of the brain. New evidence is reporti...ng differences in study groups using ancient yogic techniques of alternate nostril breathing. It's a practice known as 'pranayama' where one nostril can be focussed on during a breath practice. Differences between left and right nostrils show the intricacies of nasal breathing. 'Right nostril pranayama' group showed a significant increase, of 37% in baseline oxygen consumption. The 'alternate nostril' pranayama group showed an 18% increase, and the left nostril pranayama group also showed an increase, of 24%. This increase in metabolism could be due to increased sympathetic discharge to the adrenal medulla. The 'left nostril Pranayama' group showed an increase in volar galvanic skin resistance, interpreted as a reduction in sympathetic nervous system activity supplying the sweat glands. These results suggest that breathing selectively through either nostril could have a marked activating effect or a relaxing effect on the sympathetic nervous system. The therapeutic implications of being able to alter metabolism by changing the breathing pattern have been mentioned. Other studies: - A 2013 study found that people who practiced alternate nostril breathing lowered their perceived stress levels - Yogic breathing practices may improve lung function and respiratory endurance. A small 2017 study examined the effects of pranayama practice on the lung functions of competitive swimmers and found that it had a positive effect on respiratory endurance. - Research from 2011 found that a six-week alternative nostril breathing program had a positive impact on physical and physiological fitness-based performance. The breathing technique was found to have a positive influence on blood pressure, heart rate, and vital capacity. - A review of yogic breathing have many positive benefits for your health, including improvements to neurocognitive, respiratory, and metabolic functions in healthy people. Want to try? Alternative nostril breathing exercise in the comments. Let us know how you went.
15.01.2022 I have noticed that the worst affected countries in regard to covid-19, have the worst health, in particular, high rates of obesity & diabetes.
15.01.2022 Just because you see a new "science" article in the news or media, or even in a published study, doesn't mean it is true, accurate or believable. Here's yet ano...ther example... Just days before World Diabetes Awareness Day, a new study has been published linking the consumption of eggs to diabetes! The very first line in the study states "the association between egg consumption and diabetes is inconclusive"! So they set about trying to find an association between eggs and diabetes. They performed this "study" by looking at one to seven 3-day diet diary in Chinese adults only. The researchers and authors didn't even elaborate on which type of diabetes they were talking about in the study! No mention if it was Type 1, Type 2, Type 3 or others... Their results found a higher egg consumption was associated with an increased risk of diabetes. Note that NO cause was actually proven! They provided no scientific basis or biochemistry to prove that eggs cause diabetes. The study found: Chinese people are having a higher than global average incidence of diabetes at 10.9% of the population, as compared to 9.3% globally The costs of diabetes-related health expenditure in the US alone is $760 billion, and $109 billion in China Prevention of diabetes is very important - they got that bit right! Eggs provide protein, carotenoids (vitamin A compounds), arginine (an amino acid) and folate. What about all the healthy fats they missed, or the complete amino profile?! The authors were concerned about the high amount of cholesterol in eggs, being linked to an increased risk of diabetes by impairing insulin secretion (!). Many other studies show tha cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease or diabetes at all! Other studies of egg consumption being linked to diabetes had mixed results - some showing no association, some showing a small association and others were inconclusive A higher intake of eggs is accompanied by higher red meat consumption in US studies, which is associated with diabetes (!). No it's not... The study found that there was also a higher risk of diabetes due to age, being female, living in an urban area, having a higher income, having a higher weight or obesity, high blood pressure, eating "modern" meals (fast food, milk, egg, and deep fried food). Yet the authors lay the blame entirely on eggs! Diabetes was not associated with eating traditional meals (rice, meat and vegetables), smoking, alcohol consumption (!), vegetable consumption, or protein consumption! The study looked at other studies of egg consumption with diabetes and found a higher egg intake was associated with a higher intake of modern foods (as opposed to traditional foods), snacks, sweets, desserts, and refined grain products. They said that these high carbohydrate foods can increase the workload on the pancreas and cause insulin resistance (which is diabetes!). This is a good example of a study going out to hunt for a particular biased conclusion and finding one. In scientific terms this is called a "confirmation bias" - finding an outcome that support one's prior opinions. And also a good example of the same study ignoring other more obvious conclusions or causes, and not actually proving any biochemical causation of eggs causing any health issues. Studies based on food questionnaires or surveys, especially about what one ate years ago, are highly inaccurate and no meaningful scientific outcome should be read from studies like this. Eggs are a health food! They contain 35% protein and all amino acids, together with 63% healthy fats of a variety of types, and just 2% carbohydrates (Nutrition Data, 2020). Considering that type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease of excess carbohydrate intake, causing insulin resistance, high blood glucose (ie sugar!) levels, and inflammation, eating a food like eggs that is just 2% carbohydrates is NOT going to cause diabetes! This study ignored all the other high carbohydrate causes of diabetes, and lifestyle factors too, such as stress. Don't blame eggs for what the toast, bread, grains, sugar, juices, sugary drinks, and alcohol (all being high carbohydrate foods) are doing to cause type 2 diabetes! Don't get your nutrition advice from the media! Speak to a professional who can see through the bias in many studies and other poor nutrition advice. And keep eating eggs! Stay healthy! 13.01.2022 This is a very interesting report, talking to Australian Professor Thomas Borody
13.01.2022 "This is a superb video from Dr Kimber Stanhope, who was in the film, and her team at the University of California. Please show it to any doubters who may drink soda or juice regularly and think they are doing okay. It's what is happening on the inside. It also clearly shows how the calories of fructose and glucose behave very differently. 12.01.2022 I’ve been wanting to share my daily harvests but I keep putting it off until I’ve got something decent to show. So I told myself to stop procrastinating. Here’s a purple top turnip.
11.01.2022 Speaking of marketing tricks..... Have you tried this mango & passionfruit probiotic drink yet? It contains ZERO mango or passionfruit. Read the post in full for all the other dubious ingredients.
11.01.2022 What a wonderful way to spend the weekend
11.01.2022 Amazing!! If we allow nature to do what it does best, we all benefit. Humans are not disconnected systems from the natural world. Nature is calling!! Go out & get some....and take the kids!!... https://www.sciencealert.com/daycares-in-finland-built-a-ba
10.01.2022 And this reaction happens in EVERYONE!
10.01.2022 Simple & straight to the point. Love it! Thank you Dr Muecke!
09.01.2022 I recommend making sure you only buy Australian honey, that's not as easy as it seems, with misleading labelling & marketing.. & a tangled web of ownership. Hunt down a local bee keeper & buy their honey. And it's always going to be delicious!!
08.01.2022 It's International Permaculture Day. A celebration of all things community, self sufficiency and respect for the world around us. It was a pleasure completing my PDC (permaculture design course) with Brett at Limestone Permaculture. Check out my place, still in it's infancy, as part of the slideshow
08.01.2022 Many many moons ago I use to feed these to my primary school age kids as a quick breakfast when they were late for school. I thought the only down side was that they were more expensive. So glad I realised the error of may ways a few years later. I read the label on everything & I know what makes a good ingredient & what doesn't. Don't allow industry to dictate what is, or is not, a healthy option.
07.01.2022 It keeps coming forward: Nutrition matters when it comes to fighting COVID. What you eat is either building up your immunity or destroying it.... Mexico's death toll is the third-highest in the world after the US and Brazil. Experts say being obese or overweight puts you at greater risk of serious illness or death from the coronavirus.
07.01.2022 Do the fats & oils you consume help you thrive or harm you? Flip the packet over & read the ingredients. You'll find a vegetable oil as an ingredient in just about every packaged food!! What exactly is vegetable oil? And why it's no good for you?
06.01.2022 Read below.....makes no sense. I don't rely on the star rating, cause it's BS.
06.01.2022 Hey everyone, hope you are all doing well. In these crazy times, it's great to see so many people becoming aware of where their food comes from. Many are actively looking for local and/or Australian Made produce.... BUT the catch is, you need to read ALL of the labelling on a package. This cheese in the pictures below has the brand Real Dairy Australia splashed across the front. But you only have to look at the small 'box' on the front to see it reads "packed in Australia from 100% imported ingredients". There's not one single Australian Dairy Farmer helped by this product!! They'll get you every time if you fall for the marketing on the front of the pack.
05.01.2022 "They overestimated the likely impact of COVID by, at the very least, ten-fold". Another quote by Dr Kendrick applies here too: I am simply drawing your attention to what has simply been, probably the single biggest mistake that has ever been made in the history of the world".
04.01.2022 In the United States, we spend more on health care and disease management than any other country on the planet: almost 20% of our GDP. At the same time, 1 out ...of 6 Americans face hunger, as food insecurity escalates. On a recent call with a farmer, his wife said: We don’t just want to feed the world, we want to nourish it. Never has this been more important than now, as our country faces mounting rates of cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, allergies, autism and obesity. At its foundation, food is health care. And as we head into another election, I have the same ask of candidates that have gone before: What will you do to build a healthier food system and support our farmers in transition? Because it’s comprising the health of our country. #health #foodsystem #food #healthcare #organic #regenerative #agriculture #farming
04.01.2022 Calling all GPs...there is a proven dietary approach to potentially put into remission the dietary disease that is type 2 diabetes. 04.01.2022 What does lung immunity teach us? You can NEVER look past the mouth. People talk about the gut microbiome lots, but in reality, the human microbiome has many ...parts all working together. The mouth guides us to step back, and understand the WHOLE body in relation to an entire system working together. The ORAL microbiome includes all microorganisms that are found on or in the human oral cavity and its contiguous extensions (stopping at the distal esophagus). The mouth includes several distinct microbial habitats, such as teeth, gum, tongue, cheek, lip, hard palate, and soft palate. Joining with the oral cavity are the tonsils, pharynx, esophagus, ear, and voice box. The respiratory system includes the nasal passages, sinuses and of course the lungs. Each of these systems are teaming with bacteria, right down to the lungs. The surface area of the healthy lung is a dynamic environment. Like the mouth it is constantly bombarded by debris and microbes that make their way down from the and nose through the trachea. Barrier cells within the lungs beat rhythmically to move debris and invading microbes, while immune cells constantly patrol for and destroy unwelcome bugs. Lung infection is thought to rely in part on the infection of the mouth moving into the lower respiratory tract and failure of host defence mechanisms to eliminate the contaminating bacteria, which then multiply to cause infection. It has been suggested that dental plaque may act as a reservoir of respiratory disease, especially in people with gum disease (most common chronic disease in the world). Takeaway? Build your defences against dental disease, and you build a stronger immune system to respiratory disease. When you think health, if you think teeth first, you can’t go wrong. In my book The Dental Diet I outlined my 40-day plan to use food as a basis for lifelong healthy teeth and healthy body. See more
04.01.2022 Increased targeted nutrition to treat ADHD. Yes! Macro nutrients are protein, fats & carbohydrates. Micro nutrients are everything else eg vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, phytonutrients etc. Powerful & promising intervention. They also showed an increased growth/height rate in the children.

03.01.2022 This looks tasty. Might have to try it soon!
03.01.2022 The Pottenger's Cat's study is quite an eye opener as to the impacts of a poor diet.
03.01.2022 This is a great documentary, its a few years old now but still very relevant. Highlights the influences which determine whether your DR prescribes you a statin drug or not. Statins are cholesterol lowering medications which are among the most widely prescribed & most profitable drugs ever produced.
03.01.2022 Why aren’t we being told this?.... One of the best ways to protect ourselves from Covid and other illness is to have a strong immune system. And the best way to... strengthen your immune system is to nourish your body with real foods. Our Govt are doing a fantastic job in so many ways but they are not telling people to strengthen their immune system with nourishing foods. We feel so strongly about this, that we’re bringing together a panel of great experts on Tuesday 4th August at 8pm to talk about this. Join us for this awesome Online Training Forum on Strengthening Immunity and Preformance. Register here: https://therootcause.com.au/go/sips-webinar/
03.01.2022 "Eat whatever you want... as long as you make it"
02.01.2022 Do you suffer the signs of leaky gut? We are exposed to many chemicals and factors that may contribute to failure of your gut lining. When I see patients with b...leeding gums and gum disease, then my mind moves to their gut lining. Leaky gut is not just a digestive problem, but an issue that affects the entire body. For example, common signs of leaky gut include: joint pain/rheumatoid arthritis food sensitivities malabsorption issues sugar/carb cravings bloating, cramping, & gas skin issues like acne & rosacea inflammatory bowel issues (IBS, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis) thyroid/adrenal issues, fatigue autoimmune disorders mood issues (anxiety, depression, ADHD) Any of this sound like you? Leaky Gut also known as intestinal permeability occurs when there is damage to the lining of the intestines. This lining is made up of a single layer of side-by-side cells connected by networks of proteins. In this recent study, researchers looked at the non-nutritional components of diet and potential associated risks. Processed foods often include many non-natural ingredients and additives such as artificial flavours, sugars, stabilisers, emulsifiers, and preservatives. Detergents and emulsifiers that are added to foods might have a detrimental effect on the gut barrier. Carboxymethylcellulose has been shown to increase bacterial adherence to intestinal epithelium and might lead to bacterial overgrowth and infiltration of bacteria into the spaces between intestinal villi. The overall health of the gut affects which nutrients are absorbed by the body, as well as what chemicals and toxins are filtered out. Because leaky gut impairs the body’s ability to absorb the nutrients, even a diet full of the healthiest foods won’t be effectively utilized. Gut inflammation has even been found to increase the risk of developing arthritis, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to autoimmune disorders, leaky gut is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular issues. For example it has been found that determined a causal relationship between microbiota composition, inflammation, and atherosclerosis. If you suspect these issues may describe you or a family member, it may be time to cut out packaged foods. Focus on whole, nourishing animal based foods, that help to repair the raw materials of the gut lining. Think broths made of skin and bones, this is what your body needs to repair the gut lining. Do you suffer from gut issues?
