21.01.2022 STORM PHOBIA It’s that time of year again when we hear many reports of pets suffering from storm phobia. This very real condition is caused by a highly distressing irrational fear beyond any logical self-preservation instinct. It is deserving of our attention and there are effective treatments available. This year, Australia is bracing for a summer of above-average rainfall and increased risk of severe summer storms. If your pet suffers from storm phobia and anxiety, now is the time to make sure you're prepared. For Dr Helen Purdam's top tips on how to tell if your pet is suffering and how you can help them, head to the link below or call us on 6230 2262.

20.01.2022 #christmasraffle #opennow This time of year can be hard for some people who are in financial distress and we often see an increase in support requests to our ch...arity for people needing the funds to access emergency veterinary treatment which wasn't originally budgeted for. We completely understand that accidents happen and we are here to help in those times of need. We have one final raffle for 2020 which is Christmas themed, and all entries will not only have the chance to win some amazing prizes but you'll also be supporting our charity. We again have some amazing prizes on offer including a locally baked ginger bread house, hampers, tickets to Canberra icons and bunnings vouchers. We want to ensure we can let everyone (and there pets) have a Merry Christmas and New Year. Raffle prizes will be drawn on 20th of December and delivered the week prior to Christmas. Please note that you must supply a local (Canberra region) delivery address if you win a prize. Unfortunately we won't be able to mail out the prizes.

19.01.2022 Meet Dashi Amazingly, this brave girl was still smiling and happy to see us at her recheck this weekend. Why was this so suprising? Well, two weeks ago Dashi had her left foreleg amputated here at the surgery. Up until about 2 months ago, you wouldn't have known that Dashi is almost 9 years old as she goes for 5km walks everyday with no hesitation. Over the space of a few weeks her owners noticed that she had been intermittantly lame and sore on her front left leg and dec...ided to bring her in for a check up. After there was no improvement with anti-inflammatories and rest, it was recommended that Dashi stay in hospital to have a general anaesthetic and x-rays taken of her leg. Unfortunately these x-rays showed that the likely cause of Dashi's lameness was osteosarcoma, the most common kind on bone cancer in dogs. Exact treatment plans can vary from patient to patient, but limb ampution is often the first method of treatment. This is because osteoscarcoma is highly malignant meaning that it carries a high risk of spreading to other areas of the body, limb amputation removes the tumour, increasing survival and relieves the animal of related pain. We were so happy to see Dashi happy as always, and moving around on her remaining three legs well! What a little trooper See more

18.01.2022 Being this cute is tiring work, you've just got to settle for a nap wherever you can get one, even if that's on the treatment table in the middle of your check up

18.01.2022 Planning a trip to the coast soon? Paralysis ticks are capable of killing your pet within days of attaching. It is absolutely imperative that your pets receive tick protection before you go! Protection is now easier than ever with a range of options available to suit every pet, even your impossible-to-tablet cat! From tasty chews to long lasting topical treatments, the hardest part now is choosing between these fantastic, convenient products. Remember, prevention is safer (and MUCH cheaper!) than treatment.

18.01.2022 Another tragic reminder that HEATSTROKE IS DEADLY. All pets should have an ample supply of shelter and water at all times. DO NOT leave your dog tethered in the backyard, these easily get tangled and can restrict their access to shade and water. Never leave your pet unattended in a car or on the back of a Ute, even for a few minutes. ... Never exercise your pet during the heat of the day. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to take your dog for a walk in summer. Always check the heat of the pavement, if it’s too hot to hold your bare hand there for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your pets paws. Watch for signs of heatstroke in your pet, such as: excessive panting or drooling, vomiting and lethargy, uncoordinated movements, reddened gums or collapse. Understand your pets risk, brachycephalic breeds like bulldogs and pugs are more susceptible. Call your vet immediately if you are concerned your pet may have heatstroke. Don’t forget our wildlife! Leave extra containers of water out for birds and smaller animals where possible.

06.01.2022 Photographer Tobias Baumgaertner captured this image of two widowed fairy penguins looking over the Melbourne skyline. It has won an award in Oceanographic maga...zine’s Ocean Photography Awards 2020. The backstory is so heartwarming. The lighter penguin is an elderly female whose partner died this year. The darker one is a younger male who lost his partner two years ago. Biologists have followed them as they meet every night to comfort each other. They stand for hours together watching the city lights See more
