24.01.2022 Meet little Mia. She was lucky that I was at work the night the animal hospital received the call. A member of public rang late at night to ask what milk they could buy from the 711 to feed a kangaroo joey. ... I explained in a clear, calm and kind way that wildlife can only be raised by licensed trained wildlife carers who have specially formulated milks for each species that won't make them ill like the milks from a supermarket. Turns out the man didn't actually have the joey yet, his friend driving a truck that hit the mother and thankfully he stopped to pull her out of the pouch. The driver was on his way from the border of NSW and VIC. The man who called would not give me the drivers number so I could explain that the joey should go to a vet near by or wildlife shelter. Eventually I managed to convince this man to let me come and get the joey once it arrives at his house after work (which is the middle of the night). One of our lovely vets from work Selma offered to come along with me to make sure I was safe and then I had the added bonus of getting the Roo vet checked immediately. Selma and I went to rescue Mia. After a quick "in the fabric pouch" Vet check Selma was happy for her to stay in my care. She quitely checked her heart and chest, mucus membranes and limbs for injury. Mia is currently about 4kg. Mia has been resting and adjusting slowly to her new life at Amaroo. She is an absolutely beautiful girl and indeed very lucky. Welcome baby girl you are safe now.

24.01.2022 This beautiful Tawny Frogmouth has grown so much since coming into care as a tiny chick who had fallen from a tree and lost her family. She had been in care with our wonderful bird carer Sami and then recently came to the shelter to prepare for her release. She’s been given her freedom back to live in the wild, last night she was out hunting moths by the decking. #amaroowildlifeshelter #wildlifecare #wildlifecarer #wildlifeshelter #wild #nativewildlife #australianwildlife #wildlife #orphan #baby #family #love #rescue #rehabilitate #release #wildlifeofinstagram #wildlifeconservation #vegan #vegans #vegansofinstagram #nightjar #australia #victoria #melbourne #picoftheday #volunteer #donate #nature #photooftheday #tawnyfrogmouth

24.01.2022 After a long few weeks of rehabilitation our little echidna Prickles has been released again! Prickles is only a young echidna, approximately one year old. She was hit by a slow moving car which caused deep wounds to her paw pads and damage to her beak. She’s not been the easiest patient to care for but we managed to assist her with healing and set her free again! ... #amaroowildlifeshelter #wildlifecare #wildlifecarer #wildlifeshelter #wild #nativewildlife #australianwildlife #wildlife #orphan #baby #family #love #rescue #rehabilitate #release #wildlifeofinstagram #wildlifeconservation #vegan #vegans #vegansofinstagram #followme #likeforlike #australia #victoria #melbourne #picoftheday #volunteer #donate #nature #photoftheday

23.01.2022 Thanks to all the kind people who have donated we were able to purchase temporary fencing panels to extend the little pen for the wallaby joeys and to also set up extra space incase we get anymore macropods in from the fires or anywhere really. We are yet to set it up but excited and just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone! Our friends from the Langwarrin Access Wildlife Shelter shared with us many of the goods they were donated and also gave us some more fence pane...ls. Thanks Leah and team for sharing the love and supplies so we can all do our bit to assist the animals in need. https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-amaroo-wildlife-shelter

23.01.2022 A sweet kookaburra was found on the road in Silvan two weeks ago and was lucky enough to be picked up by a kind man before being completely squashed. She was seen by one of our favourite wildlife vets Naomi at the Lort Smith Animal Hospital and diagnosed with concussion and some soft tissue injuries to her left leg and shoulder. After a few weeks rest and some anti inflammatory drugs she was flying well again and released home. Huge thank you to the beautiful children that ...live on either side of our house that spent hours digging in their gardens for large earth worms to feed our hungry kookaburra during her time in care. The release was lovely to watch as she found her local flock of kookaburras, (that flew down to see her with in minutes of her return! ). She took some time to adjust to freedom again up in the big maple trees before flying off high in the sky!

22.01.2022 Finally we have finished building the kangaroos a shelter and the new enclosure! This means that Nina and Alira could come home from their stay with my kind friend Leah at Access Wildlife Shelter who has been caring for them in the meantime and has done a fantastic job keeping them well and happy. Thank you Leah. Massive thank you to Emma, Valentin, Abby, Pix, Ali, Paolo, Raewyn, Sarah, Joel and his boys for helping to build it! ... You are all amazing and we (me and the roos) really appreciate it. The big Roos are absolutely loving the space and the small Joeys are getting braver each day exploring up there during play time. It's not completely finished but enough to protect them from predators and weather. Thank you so much to the people who donate so that these sort of projects can be made possible. If anyone would like to make a regular small monthly donation or a one off that would be so wonderful as every cent goes a long way. It's great to see the Kangaroos enjoying their new space.

21.01.2022 Happy world wildlife day everyone!

21.01.2022 We are almost halfway to our fundraising goal! Were so blown away and grateful for everyones generosity and support in helping us continue to help as many animals we possibly can! It wouldnt be possible without your support! If you would like to make a contribution please click the link below or share the link with your friends! ... Every donation no matter how big or small makes such an impact and goes directly to the animals in our care. https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-amaroo-wildlife-shelter Thank you so much everyone!

21.01.2022 This sweet little brushy joey sadly just passed away. She came in yesterday, very cold and very sad after being dragged into someones living room by their cat. With ulcers in her eye and a laceration on her nose, we did our best to help her. We gave medications and our vet glued her wound together but she slowly declined over night and refused to drink, the stress was too much and shes gone now. Rest In Peace little baby.

20.01.2022 Hello and welcome to all our new followers and those that have been following us for a long time! Its been a really busy spring and now this summer we are all suffering from watching the overwhelming tragedy unfold of fires destroying forests, millions of animals, people lives and their homes. Its been so incredible to see everyone coming together to offer support and help. ... Thank you to everyone who is donating directly to Wildlife shelters and Vets for Compassion, who will distribute medical supplies and help dart animals. In time once the fire grounds are deemed safe, many wildlife rescue search teams will go out and look for survivors. Triage centres will be set up and we will do our best to try and save as many animals as possible. I would like to say THANK YOU very much to Joanne Lee and everyone else who has made donations and been helping Amaroo lately, its extremely appreciated! I apologise for not posting stories and photographs for so long its just been so hard to find any free time. Here is a few photos of some of the little ones growing strong after overcoming illness or injuries. Thank you to all our supporters

19.01.2022 This sweet little Tawny Frogmouth was rescued from the roof of a hot car today. She’s a bit thin, a bit smelly and pretty dehydrated. 18.01.2022 This sweet little angel is our golden girl Dani. Daniella is a brushtail possum joey who was suffering from malnutrition and thrush when she came into care at our friend Maras shelter (St Andrews). Mara did a fantastic job getting her through the worst of it but shes still got a while to go before shes completely healthy again. Mara knew that we had been having a hard time finding a buddy the right age for our other silver brushtail joey Summer, so once Dani was better she passed her on to us and the two possums are loving each others company! Thank you Mara. Brushtail possums are all unique and come in a wide range of fur tones from white, gold, silver, brown and almost black. We love them all!!!

18.01.2022 Due to the terrible storms and weather we are experiencing at the moment, we are seeing more baby possums, both Ringtails and Brushtails, becoming orphans than usual at this time of the year. Many have eye issues like this little fella or scratches and wounds from falling from trees. Some are being found first by cats and dogs and sadly we have to end their suffering. Please stay alert when outside. ... Keep your cats indoors and your dogs on lead when out and about, especially throughout spring time to help protect our wildlife. Our carers are working around the clock to help these animals and need your support. https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-amaroo-wildlife-shelter

17.01.2022 These two little beautys were set free up a tree tonight in a lush part of forest. Im so happy for them to be out there exploring and playing. I have raised them both from a very young joeys. Little Annelise had a strange condition when she first came in, she was wobbly and always had her forelimbs over extended. The vets were considering euthanasia or care but we decided to give her a go and see if she improved. After a few weeks she was gaining muscle strength and was a...ble to climb and made a full recovery. Annie was later buddied up with Rupert and they have grown up together happily. Thank you Joel and Ashley Jade Kogtevs for watching over them in your beautiful garden. Good luck out there little Brushys! See more

17.01.2022 Milk and cold apples, the perfect way for the roo joeys to cool down on a hot afternoon. Please consider leaving out water for wildlife during the hot months ahead. 16.01.2022 Summer has well and truly decided to arrive in Victoria over the past few days, with tomorrow set to be 40+ degrees in some places. So here’s your friendly reminder to leave out some fresh water for wildlife to access. As you can see in Emma’s amazing set up here, leaving some rocks and sticks in the water is helpful for any little creatures that may fall in while having a drink and may need a little help getting out. Raised bird baths are also another great way for our fea...thered friends to cool down. 16.01.2022 A fledgling Grey Shrike Thrush was found on the ground struggling on one of her legs. Kindly Tess who found the chick drove her 2.5 hrs to our hospital so she could get the care that she needs. The vets checked her and did a few radiographs but couldnt find any fractures. We are trialling her in care on anti inflammatories and rest to see if she improves. ... Grey Shrike Thrush birds are from a family of song birds and though lacking bright colours they have an extraordinary gift for singing melodies unmatched by any other Australasian species except the lyrebird! This little one, whilst confused and recovering from her quick anaesthetic was singing a beautiful tune on recovery. Shes fairly quiet now but eating very well. Lets hope she gains the strength that she needs in her left leg and can be released home again.

15.01.2022 Sir Bronson the adult male Feathertail Glider has been in care with us for a few days now. He is starting feel a bit better today. Hes slowly starting to eat more and become a little more lively. Sir Bronson was found curled up on someones doorstep in the cold after the terrible storms we had last week. ... Tiny possums are often found displaced after storms as they live under the bark of tall trees or in hollows. We hope that he will make a full recovery and be able to return to his forest home in Dewhurst soon.

13.01.2022 It's time we paid more attention to wildlife zone signs on the road. Everyone needs to slow down between dusk and dawn especially in country areas or near forests. Meet Inala. Her mother died today on the road. Luckily a kind member of public saw her body and stopped to check her pouch. He then called the number on the Help for Wildlife sign and the lovely Sue who runs the organisation took her in and cared for all day until she moved over to Amaroo. ... Thank you so much Sue and to the gentleman that saved her. I also want to thank the generous Alydia from Tasmania who sewed Inala's new cozy pouch to keep her feeling safe and warm along with many others suitable for possums. Thank you so much Alydia

13.01.2022 This is Biggie and Smalls the Baby Blue Tongue Lizards. A cat found their litter just a few days after they were born and tried to eat them. Smalls got away with no injuries, others died and Biggie survived with bites around her head. The vets dispensed some antibiotic injections and pain relief to help her heal, even though we knew she didnt have a great chance of surviving we wanted to give her a go. She required syringe feeding daily of blended berries, flowers, meat, ...insects and fruit with calcium supplements and she just lay under the heat lamps not moving for days. With time she start becoming more active and swelling went down. They would spend the sunny days outside were Smalls would run around hunting crickets and grubs. After a few weeks Biggie was showing signs of improvement eating dandelions on her own and the day with saw her run up to a snail and suck it out of its shell we knew it was time to let them go! So we picked the sunniest day of last week and let them free again in an area without cats and lots of shelter and ground cover.

12.01.2022 Yesterday George and I spent the day in the forest near home with our orphaned roo joeys, Bambi and Pharoh. The joeys absolutely loved sniffing all the trees and shrubs and tasting the native grasses and roots. Surrounded by the calls of lyrebirds we followed the tracks to clearing and we were lucky enough to find a wild mob of kangaroos. We spent time sitting very quietly near by so our joeys could watch and learn. It was really beautiful to see the excitement in their little faces! Its been almost a month now since they lost their mothers and real family.

11.01.2022 All the wildlife carers at Amaroo are overflowing with orphan possums at the moment. The joeys are always in need of new cozy pouches of varying sizes and we would love to thank Shelle for sewing us these gorgeous green beds for us as we were running very low. Wolverine the brushtail possum is our handsome model today, so beautiful. ... Thanks so much Shelle!

11.01.2022 Made with 100% cotton and 100% love, Jasmine one of our page followers made these absolutely beautiful hang pouches for our wallaby and Kangaroo orphans to relax and hang around in. Little Pete and Bardy (aka Scar) are happily chilling out in them and enjoying some sunshine! The design is perfect, the fabric gorgeous and we couldnt be more grateful!!... Thank you so much Jasmine for your very thoughtful and kind donations. We love them!

11.01.2022 Meet Blue! Shes a young Satin Bowerbird and very cute in an ugly kinda way! Blue was found in someones backyard alone on the ground. The man who found her knew she must have parents around so left her alone, not wanting to interfere which is the right thing to do. Unfortunately though her parents never came back. The gentleman that found her waited a few days then called for help. ... Blue was hungry and underweight but now after a few weeks in care is gaining weight well and growing strong! She loves to eat fresh berries and insects like all Bowerbirds. On sunny days she enjoys flight practice outside and watching the wallabies graze. Blue is just beautiful!

10.01.2022 This beautiful Blue-Faced Honeyeater has been raised by our wonderful bird carer Sami since she was a chick and is now at the shelter while she waits for her transport to freedom, back where she was found. This sweet girl was found near the border of New South Wales by a member of public, who then drove her all the way to a Melbourne veterinary clinic to be checked over. Blue-faced honeyeaters take about two years to fully develop the beautiful blue colour around their eyes.... It’s taken us quite some time to find another carer from the region she is from who will be able to soft release her for us to ensure she has a safe release back into the wild. Tomorrow she is heading on her road trip with her carer Sami, back to her home where she will be released by Elizabeth and have the company of other Blue-faced Honeyeaters. A big thank you to Sami for doing such a wonderful job raising this quirky little girl. Thanks to Emma for picking her blossoms and leaf and George for collecting grubs and moths to feed her ever hungry tummy. #amaroowildlifeshelter #wildlifecare #wildlifecarer #wildlifeshelter #wild #nativewildlife #australianwildlife #wildlife #orphan #baby #family #love #rescue #rehabilitate #release #wildlifeofinstagram #wildlifeconservation #vegan #vegans #vegansofinstagram #followme #australia #victoria #melbourne #picoftheday #volunteer #donate #nature #photoftheday #bluefacedhoneyeater

10.01.2022 Blue my little satin Bowerbird has been released in a beautiful home in three bridges where Bowerbirds are frequently seen feasting on the local fruit and drinking by the creek. Blue spent a few days adjusting in a pen with blueberries plants to eat before being set free to enjoy her life in the forest with the others. Thank you so much Joel for assisting her in the final stages and Emma and Valentin for bird sitting when I was at work and feeding the hungry little one when she was just a chick.

09.01.2022 Hello Wildlife lovers! I hope everyone is well. I'm back home in Australia after being away for over a month so you can call me again if needed. ... I just picked up this bargain at Also for $130! Very excited to finally have a camera to monitor animals in care, after release and also for rescues. Thank you to those who donate, this enables me to get equipment like this and makes life easier. I will set the camera up soon on some old wombat burrows to see if they are in use or free for rehabilitated wombats to go into.

08.01.2022 Its such beautiful weather in spring! Sunshine and warm winds with the temperature dropping and cold nights. I love it! Springtime means wildlife rescuers and carers are super busy though, which can be very tiring and I feel like winter was hard enough. I lost some of my favourite kangaroos and struggled a lot to continue caring but the phone keeps ringing and I still want to help. I feel like Ive recovered now and Im getting my health mental and physical back so I can con...tinue to look after the wild ones. Look how cute Inala and Neo are enjoying the glorious weather in their cozy bed. Its hard to get Neo to stay still for a self portrait but Inala was happy to pose with me! The big beautiful tall boy in the photo over looking his new home where he is free now is Clancy. A very proud Clancy! Huge thank you to Tanya for taking him into her mob after his best friend Mia injured her tail and was put to sleep at the Healesville wildlife hospital a month ago. It was so hard losing her but Im so glad Clancy is coping well and loving his new home. Enjoy the beautiful day everyone! See more

07.01.2022 This poor Ringtail possum was grabbed from a tree by a dog at night. You can see some minor grazes and punctures but the rest are crush injuries from the dogs strong jaws. His bruising was intense, one hand missing and his femur smashed. He was peacefully put to sleep. Rest in peace Possum. I'm sorry. It's not fair.

07.01.2022 Freedom for this beautiful turtle. She came into care with a cracked shell after being hit by a car. An x-ray confirmed she’s carrying 12 eggs and needs to find a safe place to lay soon. Thankfully our amazing wildlife vet Tristan helped us with a treatment and release plan for her. She’s had her long acting antibiotics and pain relief as well as the wound treated. Once the bleeding stopped the edge of the shell wound was sealed closed. Shell fractures in turtles is extremel...y painful in the same way it would be if we broke a bone. We found a beautiful safe place with soft sand for her to lay her eggs and plenty of food in the water. Good luck mumma turtle! 06.01.2022 Thank you Ashley a student from Upper Yarra Collage for saving this Masked lapwing plover chick. After falling from the school roof the teachers were going to take him to be put to sleep but Ashley grabbed him and called for help. Ash named him Grant and placed him in a very cozy make shift nest! I looked after him over night until another carer Kirsten could take him to live with other plover orphans she is raising. Lapwings are shy and harmless most months of the year exc...ept spring when a breeding pair will be very protective of their eggs and chicks. Unfortunately because they swoop to scare off anyone coming near their young many people dont like them. They often make nests and lay eggs on open ground like sports oval, horse paddocks, flat roof tops and on the sides of roads near pathways, so frequently run into issues with humans. Lapwings are a native and protected species. Grant is safe now thanks to Ashley and Kirsten for raising him See more

This beautiful Echidna has a deep cut on their paw pad and will be in care a little while longer receiving care before they’re suitable for release. 04.01.2022 Beautiful Sabretooth the ringtail possum joey was such a fierce and frightened boy when he arrived in care. His tail tip was wounded and necrotic and fell off. Potentially a bite from another possum, we are not entirely sure. But this beautiful boy has settled in well and is growing up quickly. #amaroowildlifeshelter #wildlifeshelter #wildlifecare #ringtailpossum #possum #baby #joey #family #rescue #rehabilitate #australia #victoria #australianwildlife #wildlifewarriors #vegan #love #volunteer #donate

04.01.2022 Today we sent this beautiful mother ringtail possum and her three daughters back into the forest after a small stay in care as the mother was found weak and collapsed with head trauma. Its always such a joy to see animals recover and get a second chance. Thank you George for climbing up a tree to tie their box up!

02.01.2022 It's the first Friday of the month and that means... Happy fairy possum Friday! Thank you to ALL those fighting for us. (While we're not over the moon with the term "fairy possum" we do admit it has a certain ring to it.)

02.01.2022 The amount of kindness and support from everyone recently has been absolutely amazing! Everyone is coming together and its heartwarming to see. Thank you so much to all of you who are actively trying to make the lives of others better every day. ... Sometimes an act of kindness is helping someone having a hard time or sewing pouches for orphaned joeys, planting native trees and shrubs, donating money or time at a shelter or maybe its who you didnt eat that day? Its really time to start thinking about what we can do and change in our lives to help save our beautiful planet before its too late. Our governments are not doing enough, we need to work together to make positive changes, we need to consume less, avoid wasteful packaging, avoid eating animal products, keep our dogs on leads and cats inside, plant native trees and as many as possible! There is so many ways we can improve and we need to start talking about them, acting on it and looking after each other, including ALL animals. Lets start today. Big love to you all, From Nikky and everyone at Amaroo

01.01.2022 Little Pete and Bardy have been through a lot in the last few months. Both of them have had multiple grand mal seizures and have been in and out of intensive care and hospital. After many stressful, sleepless nights, many tears and many medications, both wallabies are now drug free and not had any seizures for weeks so we hope they are now over it. Our vets were unsure of the cause, possibly toxoplasmosis or some kind of viral meningitis. Whatever it was we made it through an...d now they are growing well and happily enjoying some fresh flowers for breakfast after their milk bottles. Huge thank you to Lort Smith staff vets, Tristan, Tom, Sasha, Gary and Selma, the nurses Jordon, Sasha, Sami and all the others who replaced IVs and did Joey sitting in ICU for me, the amazing volunteers Emma, Valentin and George, without all of you we may not of survived the last two months. Its really been a group effort to get these boys through! Also a special thanks to Sandi who saved Bardy from dying in his deceased mothers pouch and the Yarra Junction CFA volunteers who saved little Pete

01.01.2022 I've been busy as always doing rescues, rehabilitation and releases but it's time I saved some animals overseas also. It's always a bittersweet time saying goodbye and good luck to animals you have come to know, raised and of course loved! So anyway I'd just like to let everyone know I'm actually going to be away for a month until April 6th in Myanmar with vet volunteers assisting 700 dogs and 500 cats that require desexing and other treatments. ... Please have an alternative ready besides Amaroo if you find an animal during this time, you can still message me here and I'll forward someone else's number to help but having wildlife Victoria number on hand is a good start. 8400 7300 Thank you, Love from Nikky and the wild ones

01.01.2022 Wolverine the Brushtail possum waking up from his slumber, curious to see what’s on the dinner menu today. #amaroowildlifeshelter #wildlifecare #wildlifecarer #wildlifeshelter #wild #nativewildlife #australianwildlife #wildlife #orphan #baby #family #love #rescue #rehabilitate #release #wildlifeofinstagram #wildlifeconservation #vegan #vegans #vegansofinstagram #followme #likeforlike #australia #victoria #melbourne #picoftheday #volunteer #donate #nature #photoftheday

01.01.2022 We have been so busy, that Ive not had any time to post the animals stories or photos the last few months. We have moved house/shelter, been volunteering with the bush fire animals and doing local rescues along with the usual animals in care for rehabilitation until release. With so many stories to tell, Ill start with the rescue we did tonight from the Selby Primary school. We got a call from a lady who runs the local childcare from the school, saying shes found a possu...m with attack wounds all over their body. When we got there it was dark and we found the poor Ringtail up high, weak in the tree with (likely) his partner and joey in the next tree along. It was impossible to reach even with a tall ladder and a long bamboo stick we had, to try and encourage the possum to move onto a lower branch. Eventually we were able to move/ nudge him across to the next more flimsy tree and George climbed up and bent the branch down so I could just place my jumper around the possum and he could just hold onto the leaves and feel safe. We didnt expect to get him down tonight and were so happy once we were able to reach him. The poor boy has been attacked by a cat and has scratches all over his back. Thankful we cant see any teeth puncture wounds so perhaps he will survive with antibiotics and pain relief. Time will tell. Please keep your cats indoors!!!! Its not fair that people let them roam around to attack and kill the local wildlife. I feel so sorry for the possum and his family that were watching us catch him, they will be missing him. Wish him luck, its rare that possums can survive cat attacks. *Update* He died in the night and I regret not euthanasing him
