22.01.2022 It was a glorious morning at Chandler flying field. Light winds early and a light breeze later in the day. 7 pilots turned up to take advantage of the nicest we...ather we have had in a few weeks. Although the insects drove us mad before the wind blew them away. No crashed aircraft today. Everyone went home happy knowing they do not need to rebuild anything. This week. See more

18.01.2022 INSIGHT INTO COULSON AVIATION’S LARGE AIR TANKER OPERATIONS AND BEHIND THE SCENES PREPARATIONS Have you ever wondered who flies these massive firefighting aircr...aft and how they operate? Already this year, since January 2nd the Large Air Tankers [LAT] have conducted 23 drops in Western Australia on bushfires for a total of 346,000 litres of retardant. Operating these aircraft are highly experienced crew members - two pilots and an engineer. All three of the crew have to work simultaneously with each other, while also following the lead plane which flies ahead of the LAT, indicating where the drop is required. The majority of the pilots have thousands of hours under their belts flying civilian, military or agricultural aircraft. This job is not for the faint hearted with very little automation. Almost all the flying is by hand, therefore the pilots need to be able to thoroughly demonstrate a natural ability to fly the aircraft. Coulson Aviation requires their pilots to be mentally tough as they are working a 12 day on, 12 day off roster, often many thousands of kilometres away from their families. The day commences with a walk around the aircraft ensuring everything is set up and working optimally. After this the crew debrief on the previous day. Discussion about what was successful, what needs adjustment and where to improve. When a call comes in, the crew are ready to be dispatched and airborne within 15 minutes. The aircraft is already loaded with fuel so while the crew set up the aircraft the SES volunteers load on water, retardant or foam. The WA Minister of Fire and Emergency Services stated just how important SES volunteers’ role is, stating that they [the LATs] can nevertheless, not replace our volunteers. Once at the fire the LAT will follow the lead plane on the drop. At the commencement of the drop the C-130 maintains a speed of 120 knots, 100% flap and an altitude of 200 feet. Flying at such a low altitude and slow speed creates a very high risk. This is the biggest challenge faced by aerial firefighting crews with pilot Dawn Blumberg explaining the biggest challenge with planes like these is to be calm and patient under pressure...operating safely and supporting the firefighters on the ground and knowing that every decision you make could potentially be life or death for the people affected, their homes, their lives affected by the fire. The crew who operate the LATs are extremely experienced with one of the pilots, Dawn Blumberg having over 15 years experience flying the C-130 in the US Air Force and Montana National Guard. Annually the crew take part in a spring training camp which is the one time a year where all the crews get a chance to sit down as a group and reconnect over the previous season in preparation for the upcoming season. During the ground training the crews focus on safety through various briefings including a safety management program, crew resource management course and reviewing presentations on controlled flight into terrain. Crews also review the fire traffic area and fire anatomy. On the flight deck training consists of simulator training with a main focus surrounding safety and procedures during emergencies in the aircraft. Furthermore, crews take part in a line check once a year to ensure they are continually following the correct procedures and safety protocol for the upcoming season. The hard work and sacrifices made by the crews involved in operating the LAT to keep our communities safe is something that cannot go unrecognised; indeed these sacrifices are even greater than usual during the Covid-19 pandemic, with the U.S. based crews having to quarantine for 14 days on arrival. 12.01.2022 Meier Motors did it again The latest restoration by Meier Motors of Bremgarten (Germany), Hawker Sea Fury FB11 D-CRZY, made its first flight on 21 September 202...0. We reported earlier on its arrival with Meier Motors *). The fighter, painted as Royal Australian Navy coded 308/K is destined for Stefano Landi, a well experienced and well know Italian aerobatic- and warbird pilot. The Sea Fury was allegedly built as WJ298, and then exported to Iraq in 1952, where it flew as 303. The aircraft was salvaged from that country by Ed Jurist in 1979 and registered N26SF. He then sold the machine to the famous Guido Zuccoli. As VH-HFG the fighter flew for the Zuccoli family from 1983 to 2006, painted in Royal Australian Navy colours as 308/K. It was sold to Walter C. Bowe in Sonoma (CA) as N97SF in 2007. Nowadays there are reasons to believe that D-CRZY is only partly WJ298. It is said to have been exported to Iraq in 1952, but...; Quoting the famous Geoff Goodall, the original WJ298 was still operational with Royal Navy No.776 FRU based at Hurn (UK) in September 1958! Iraqi AF 303 was originally quoted as construction number 37522, but paperwork also indicates it is 37727, which makes it the aircraft later flying as N48SF. It seems likely that D-CRZY is a composite airframe, with its centre section coming from WJ298 and the tail section of former Iraqi 308. *) SFN 31 January 2019, Another Sea Fury at Meier Motors https://www.facebook.com/Scramblemagazine/posts/2620308094662375 Photo: Alex Christy, kindly provided by AirHistory.net and Meier Motors GmBH #avgeek #avgeeks #warbirds #classicaircraft #Hawker #SeaFury #MeierMotorsGmBH

08.01.2022 One night to lay up the fuse, last night to lay up the tail plane, elevator and fin and one more session to make the cowl and rudder and we'll have the next Fok...ker DVIII fuse done! That just leaves the 3 part wing and the fairing between the wheels. These things are really quick because of the low part count. A motor and firewall to install, drop the radio board in and attach the undercarriage. Soooo much quicker this time round with the moulds already made and we know it's a proven flyer. Looking forward to having two of them to fly together

01.01.2022 Today Warbirds Online features the Grumman S-2G Trackers at the HARS Aviation Museum - Albion Park NSW. We visited HARS recently to view the newly arrived aircr...aft from the Royal Australian Navy Historic Flight after they were gifted to HARS. The Grumman S-2G Trackers, two of which have now joined the original HARS resident which was S-2G N12-152812 Construction Number 281C RAN Number 851 Ex-USN Bu 152812 that has been under restoration at HARS since its arrival in 2006. The two newly arrived aircraft are the airworthy S-2G N12-152333 Construction number 220C RAN Number 844 Ex-USN Bu 152333. This was the aircraft which formally flew with the RANHF at many air displays back in the 1980s. The other aircraft from the RANHF collection is S-2G N12-152334 Construction Number 221C RAN Number 845 Ex-USN Bu 152334. This aircraft is a static example. Grumman Tracker RAN No 544 is likely to remain airworthy in the HARS fleet and resume its long dormant Warbird career. This aircraft was flown into HARS and is undergoing routine maintenance. This Tracker served with the RAN from 6th of April 1977 until retired in 1984 and then joined the RANHF in 1985 until it was officially grounded in 2014 although it had not actually flown for some years. The other recently acquired Tracker S-2G N12-152334 Construction Number 221C RAN Number 845 Ex-USN Bu 152334 has long been in storage at Nowra and is in good static restorable condition. It made its way to Albion Park recently from Nowra NSW on the back of a truck. The intention is to restore the aircraft to excellent museum display standard. The original HARS Tracker was S-2G N12-152812 Construction Number 281C RAN Number 851 Ex-USN Bu 152812 was again one of the batch of 16 S-2G imported from the USA in 1977. The aircraft was withdrawn in 1984 and eventually after prolonged storage it was sold to QANTAS at Mascot and used as a training aid and in 2006 it was sold on to HARS and transported to Albion Park NSW where a plan was put in place to restore it to flying condition and this continued until recently. It is unknown if the aircraft will continue to be brought to airworthy status of be used to support 844 in the air. HARS has a great collection of 3 Grumman S-2G trackers and we cannot wait to witness one of these in the air again at a future Airshow. 01.01.2022 We don't think we want to go on making new moulds for different planes forever. We already have good moulds for a 1/5 scale Lightning, Mustang and Corsair plu...s the Fokker DVIII and a slightly smaller Thunderbolt. So we're having a play with making finer detail for the planes we've got starting with a cockpit for the Mustang. Just seeing if we can cope with the down scaling in thinking from 2.3m laminar flow wings to 2.5mm writing on a rudder pedal! So far the first play is promising and enjoyable. We'll see where it goes ...... See more
