But we must never forget the 8 million horses and mules that lost their lives in WW1. Brave and strong, shipped around the world, these animals new nothing of why we were fighting, knew nothing but the trust of the man nearest to him.... Horses by the millions were put in service as cavalry mounts and beasts of burden, but they were not the only animals active in the war. Mules, dogs, camels, and pigeons all played vital roles, as well as many others -- all at great risk, and with heavy cost. So today, when you bow your head and remember, make sure you remember our beloved horses, because without them, we wouldnt be here today. We owe them our freedom. #LestWeForget

Meanwhile, emails and other documentation obtained from Highland Pet Food, north of Armidale, identify four occasions in the last two years in which horses including GH-branded thoroughbreds were sent from the Gerry Harvey-owned Broombee Stud, and 89 horses sent from TAMAC STUD FARM. The footage at the Kankool knackery also reveals countless instances of illegal animal cruelty and a culture of disrespect and carelessness, with animals - not just horses, but cattle, sheep, and pigs - often forced into the knockbox several at a time and picked off in front of each other, many dying slow agonising deaths with multiple bullets fired at them or their throats cut open while still conscious. Executive Director of Farm Transparency Project, Chris Delforce: "Clearly, the rule implemented by Racing NSW prohibiting this slaughter is nothing but a smokescreen designed to make them look good to the public while doing absolutely nothing to actually address this problem. In fact, while these knackeries are killing horses on a weekly basis, Peter V’landys is busy suing journalists for reporting on this exact thing."
