25.01.2022 Have you experienced this strange effect with an epidural? Hey fam! Did you know that one of the side effects of an epidural can be itchy skin? ... I learned this at a recent birth. Poor mama experienced an uncontrollable itchy back. It definitely wasn’t the epidural experience she was hoping for. She was given medication to try and relieve the itch but unfortunately nothing worked. She drew on all her strength to keep from scratching and her partner lovingly applied a cold damp cloth to the outer edges which helped a tiny bit. What was your experience like with an epidural?

I entered these 5 frames into the the Birth Photographer International Image Competition and scored 4 bronze and 1 silver. There was over 200 entries and every image was judged live with so much incredible, constructive feedback given. I have learned so much over the 2 days of judging and it was such a fun experience to watch from home. We have such an amazing, supportive community! - Each image was judged individually based on the skill of the photographer: 0-19 Below Standard 20-29- Professional Standard 30-39- Bronze 40-44- Silver 45-50- Gold Bronze the photographer has displayed above average skill. He/she understands that all categories work together and has made each one flow together. Silver the photographer displayed superior skill and knowledge in lighting, creativity, and composition.

Here is my unsolicited advice first, before you buy the state-of-the-art pram and the beautiful bassinet, hire a team that aligns with you. That will support you. Do you actually like them as human beings? ... Do you vibe with them? Do they align with what you’re envisioning for your birth and postpartum? Don’t just check them off the grocery list because it’s what someone told you, you should do. The people you invite into your birth space can directly effect the way your labour progresses. For better or for worse. This is your day (or night). You should have people in the room that support you, who have walked through this season of life with you. You should go big with a vision. A vision that encompasses pregnancy, birth AND postpartum. Research every possible outcome and how you would like to steer your ship should they arise so you’re not caught off guard. 18.01.2022 One of the most vivid memories I can remember during labour, I was in the shower kneeling on the ground telling my husband I needed an epidural saying I couldn’t do this anymore and how tired I was, he was calmly trying to tell me that we would get through this but I was begging him so he left to go and speak to my midwife about other ways to help relieve the pain. I can remember looking up and Amber, our incredibly talented birth photographer grabbed my hand and said to me You are doing so amazing! 11.01.2022 Like many new mamas, I didn’t realise all the moments I would miss until months after my first baby was born. Because everyone was so focused on supporting me during my birth, I have nothing to look back on. No photographs. ... Nothing tangible to hold on to and process what I had been through. Memories replay over in my mind, everyday fading that little bit more. I am so sad that have nothing to help link my internal feelings with the power of what my body was working hard to do. With just his big sister, papa and fur brother present, I roared him into the world. ... All of the things I had ready for labour were not even looked at, touched or used. 07.01.2022 Hey there I thought Id share a photo of me. Two days into my second breastfeeding journey. What a rollercoaster. Im on such a high in this image. Incredible birth. A babe that I thought latched great from the start. I was sure this time it would be different. A day after this was taken he would loose weight. Just like his sister did. In the first week of becoming a mama for the very first time these are just a few of the words I remember hearing: /breast fee...ding/bottle feeding/syringe feeding/finger feeding/cup feeding/cluster feeding/low supply/over supply/baby-led-attachment/colostrum/10% weight drop/double breast pump/nipple shields/feeding cues/engorgement/flat nipples/domperidone/cracked nipples/hand expressing/blocked ducts/dummy/tongue tie/breast compression/let down/hormones/mastitis/staph infection/bactroban/formula/poor latch/lactation consultant/IBCLC/lip tie/nipple confusion/donor milk/lanolin/skin-to-skin/ My two breastfeeding journeys have not been easy. I found it very overwhelming. It took us a good three months with my first born to establish, thanks to the help of an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) at the Breastfeeding Centre of WA within the first two weeks pp. So when it came to round two with my second I thought I was ready, until a simple weigh in at the local health nurse showed a weight drop, the nurse turned to me and said, do you know why this is? I wanted to yell back in her face, of course I know why you judgy bitch! But instead I burst into tears and all those feelings from the first time came rushing back... Thankfully my postpartum midwife @perthpregnancycentre was an IBCLC. She was so supportive and never let me doubt myself. She gave me the courage and support to continue. At three weeks pp we had his tongue tie released and I went on to feed him for 14 months. 02.01.2022 Motherhood can be difficult, hilarious, beautiful and wild. Here is a beautiful photo the super amazing @amywoodwardphoto took of me and my funny, gorgeous, crazy littles. It was taken just before our world changed and people could still travel. I am so, so grateful I reached out to Amy while she was here in WA. Something inside me said I wouldnt get this chance again. Ive had a few new humans find me recently and follow along so I wanted to say hello and tell you a l...ittle of why Im here in this space. Feel free to tell me a little of why youre here, Id love to know! In 2015 my first child was born. My transition to motherhood was a complicated, yet incredible experience. I had focused so much on the labour and birth of our beautiful daughter that I hadnt for a second thought about what would come next. Three days after she was born, I turned 30 and the oxytocin high I had been riding came crashing down. The baby blues hit me hard. Outwardly her birth was textbook, but inwardly there was much that I still needed to process and it took a good six months before the haze started to lift. During this time I was drawn to empowering images of women birthing their babies. Real images of mothers in front of the lens. The love, the hugs, the messy, the complicated. I realised that these are moments that need to be remembered. When I fell pregnant a second time, the first thing I did was hire a birth photographer. This time, I didnt need the photos to process any trauma. Instead they were a way for me to preserve the memory, the way my fresh newborn son's face looked as he took his first breath, how my midwife supported me, and the strength and vulnerability of my husband. It was an investment that was priceless. Motherhood can be difficult, hilarious, beautiful, wild and every moment is worth preserving.
