11.01.2022 So what would I do in an individual tutoring hour? Even though Im a qualified teacher, I approach these hours quite differently to how a school teacher would approach a lesson with thirty students. Each hour differs for each student, and thats the real strength of individual tutoring. Generally what I do would look a bit like this:... In the first few minutes I would connect with the student and find out what has happened for their subject since I saw them last. This means asking about classwork, homework, assignments, and any upcoming exams. I need to have a strong idea of their current situation. I then compare that information with my notes. My notes will tell me about any specific weaknesses that have been observed in past sessions. I will use this information to make decisions on what to focus on for that lesson. I like to explain to students why we are studying what we are studying. I find students feel better about work if they can clearly see a purpose. Im never scared of questions like "When will we use this in real life?" because a student asking this sort of question is wanting to be connected to purpose. I love tutoring at our centre here as I have full access to all my files and books. The extensive resources here mean that I can choose the perfect exercise for the student. As I teach and help the student, I take notes to help me with future lessons. Honestly I really love my work. I form great bonds with the students and we often have fun in the process. Most students leave the hour feeling satisfied and with a greater sense of confidence.
