25.01.2022 Job of the Week - Timing Chain Replacement, Nissan Pathfinder (R51), V6 engine, automatic transmission. This vehicle was presented with various symptoms, being ...lack of power, poor acceleration, Engine Light "ON", and generally poor engine performance. The owner knew something wasn't right. I inspected the vehicle, took it for a road test and also scanned the diagnostic systems. Diagnostic codes pertaining to the Camshaft Position Sensors were found, leading me to suspect a stretched Timing Chain. This issue is not uncommon and the poor engine performance was also a giveaway. Replacement of the Timing Chains is necessary to rectify this type of fault. This post deals with that process, which was very labour intensive. See more
24.01.2022 Job of the Week - A list of work on a Mazda 6, Automatic Wagon. This vehicle presented with numerous issues, the most important being high oil consumption. With... 310,000Km's on the Odometer, there is no doubt the engine had seen better days. The owner was very happy with all other aspects of the vehicle and opted for a replacement secondhand motor to be fitted. In addition, other repairs were needed to the vehicle brakes, tyres and drive shafts. Those works are also covered in this post. See more

22.01.2022 Job of the Week - Engine Replacement on a Nissan X-Trail. I have attached a series of photographs depicting the tasks involved to replace the engine on a 2002 N...issan X-Trail with a QR25 4 Cylinder Engine and Automatic Transmission. The vehicle was presented with a complaint of overheating. During my investigation the vehicle failed a combustion leak test and water was found within the engine oil, confirming my suspicion of a major problem which I suspected to be the Cylinder Head. The decision was made to transplant the engine with a suitable, warranted replacement. This is a working vehicle and time off the road was an issue. I decided to remove the engine and transmission together as a single unit and will refer to this assembly as the "Power Pack". See more

20.01.2022 Job of the Week - The vehicle is a Mitsubishi Magna sedan, 2004, Automatic with a V6 naturally aspirated petrol engine. Timing belts should be replaced at intervals nominated by the manufacturer - in this case, every 100,000km's. The subject vehicle was presented with 300k on the odometer, and whilst no mechanical problems were evident, it was considered prudent by the owner to replace the timing belt and associated pulleys and tensioner. This post deals with the process, which takes approximately 4 hours.
20.01.2022 Then there’s this guy!
19.01.2022 Job of the Week - The subject vehicle is a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder, V6 Petrol Engine, Automatic Transmission. The vehicle presented with a pronounced rattling noise evident during engine operation, the "Engine Light" was also "ON". Diagnosis lead to a stretched Timing Chain being the most likely culprit. This post deals with the process I went through to replace the Primary Timing Chain and associated components. There are two other Secondary Timing Chains within this engine, however these chains were deemed to be within tolerance and were not replaced. This is a lengthy job, and takes about 6-8 hours.
18.01.2022 This is a ripper!
16.01.2022 As Summer approaches, an overheating engine may be an unfortunate reality for many vehicle owners. The possible causes may be widespread, however this post deals with the potential resultant damage, which could be substantial and in many cases expensive. An overheating engine should be shut down immediately and assistance should be sought as soon as possible. NEVER remove the radiator cap or expansion chamber cap when the engine is hot. Let everything cool down to the point t...hat it is cool to touch. Should major resultant damage be revealed it will in most cases involve the "Cylinder Head and/or Head Gasket". The term "Blown Head Gasket" is used by many to describe this symptom. Diagnosis of a damaged cylinder head or gasket is usually pretty straight forward. In a recent case at AMC Automotive, the customer presented with a vehicle which had overheated badly on 3 seperate occasions (at least). The engine was misfiring upon start up and seemed to clear and run well after about 30 seconds (red flag number 1), large bubbles were noted brewing up at the radiator filler neck (red flag number 2), the top radiator hose had actually blown off the radiator due to over pressurisation of the cooling system (red flag number 3). A blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head (or both) was most likely the problem. To be 100% sure, I proposed a combustion leak test to the customer. This is how the test works. See more
15.01.2022 Job of the Week - The vehicle is a late model Ford Territory which was presented with a complaint associated with the Automatic Transmission. The transmission would drive perfectly in all forward gears including upshift and kickdown. However, upon selection of Reverse gear, the transmission would drop into "limp" mode, which is aptly named as the vehicle can only be driven short distances at slow speeds whilst in this mode, in effect allowing the driver to "limp" home. The 6R...80 is a fully automatic, electronically controlled transmission, which includes hydraulic valves actuated by electric solenoids. The solenoids are given instructions from the Transmission Control Module, which is integrally linked to numerous other systems within the vehicle. Following road test, the vehicle was scanned and all diagnostic channels checked for "trouble codes" or faults. Several faults were found within the Transmission Control Module (TCM) that were directly associated with the transmission shift mechanisms. Ultimately, the fault was isolated within the Mechatronic Unit which is the mechanical/electronic control unit of the transmission. Replacement of the Selector Range Unit (a component of the Mechatronic Unit) was deemed the solution. Open-heart surgery on the transmission was therefore the only way forward. This post covers the procedure I undertook to successfully repair this transmission. See more
14.01.2022 To all our valuable customers, Maricel and I would like to express our thanks and appreciation for your continued support. AMC Automotive hit a little milestone today and has achieved 100 "likes" on Facebook. This sort of recognition is not possible without "you" - thanks again. Chris and Maricel.
14.01.2022 The DSG type of Transmission has become more prevalent in recent years and is readily found installed into VW, Audi and Skoda type vehicles. DSG is an abbreviation for Direct Shift Gearbox and is a far more complex beast than the average Auto Transmission. Multiple clutches and computer controls prevail to assist the driver for smooth and quick gear changes. To service this type of transmission, one must have the correct tools, fluid and access to the correct procedure. This is how I service the Volkswagen DSG's.

14.01.2022 This vehicle presented with chronic overheating problems which could not be overcome. Eventually, in conjunction with the owner, the decision was taken to replace the engine as a complete unit. The procedure was a success, the vehicle is back on the road with no further ovehating issues.

11.01.2022 This post deals with a complex and time consuming task - Replacement of the High Pressure Common Rail Diesel Injection Pump on a 2012 Ford Territory Automatic Wagon. The location of CRDI pump on this vehicle contributes to the degree of difficulty of the task, as access is tight. The pump is located toward the rear of the engine, deep within the "V" or valley of the V6 engine block, necessitating the removal of a considerable amount of hardware prior to removing the HP pump. ...In addition, the pump is belt driven off the rear of the passenger side cylinder head, which is impossible to view directly and requires flexible lighting, mirrors and double-jointed wrists to dismantle. It's a comfortable days labour and then some, as I also replaced the Timing Belt on this vehicle. The vehicle initially presented in "Limp" mode and displayed a persistence to drop back into "Limp" mode without warning. A scan of the entire vehicle revealed a solitary Diagnostic Code pertaining to a faulty High Pressure Fuel Valve. This valve is attached to the HP CRDI pump and is pressed into place. Therefore it cannot be replaced as a seperate unit - replacement of the entire HP pump as a unit is the only option. As a safeguard, the drive belt should also be replaced when undertaking this task. 11.01.2022 Job of the Week - Holden Cruze Engine Replacement. This vehicle was presented with a complaint of overheating. A closer inspection revealed water present within... the engine oil. The engine also failed a combustion leak test and was misfiring. All symptoms of a very badly blown head gasket, cracked head or potentially worse. The decision was made to change out the motor rather than risk a repair which could lead to the discovery of additional internal damage and thus an increase in quoted repair costs. I started the photography after I had already removed the engine, but I think you will get the idea of the reassembly aspect. The vehicle is a 2012 Holden Cruze, 1.4 Ltr Turbo Charged Engine and Automatic Transmission. See more
11.01.2022 For decades, Diesel fueled engines have been extremely popular and may been found powering a wide variety of motor vehicles. European diesel engines are found under the bonnets of VW Golf's, Mercedes Benz and Audi's. Ford utilized Diesel engines in their Territory and Focus ranges. Commercially, they are found everywhere, Ford Transits, Hyundai iLoads, Mercedes Sprinters, Mazda BT50's, just to name a few. However, the domestic 4x4 market is where the diesel engine dominates. ...Throughout the decades, the technology controlling modern day diesel engine has continued to evolve and for many manufacturers, problems have also emerged....................one of which is "Coking". Coking is a build up of contaminants within the Inlet Manifold, which if left untended, will eventually choke the motor as the Inlet Manifold becomes severely blocked. Simply put, the motor airway becomes blocked and it can't breathe properly, leading to increased fuel consumption, lack of power/throttle response, increased soot or black smoke at the exhaust tailpipe and potentially blocking of the exhaust system as well. Regular servicing and the correct lubricants will greatly reduce the possibility of Coking. This post deals with the rectification of Coking withing the Inlet Manifold of a late model Mitsubishi Pajero. See more

09.01.2022 Very inspiring and a reminder of what is inside all of us, if we let our spirit flow.
09.01.2022 Vehicles powered by an internal combustion engine require liquid fuel to function (Petrol or Diesel). The fuel must be delivered at the correct time, the correc...t pressure and be of sufficient volume to meet the engine requirements. This aspect of engine operation is taken care of by a "pump". In days gone by, fuel pumps were fairly rudimentary, mechanical devices mounted onto the side of the motor. They were easy to access and in most cases could be removed and refitted in about 15-30 minutes. As vehicles have become more sophisticated, so have the fuel pumps become more complicated. Electrically driven fuel pumps, filters and fuel gauge sender units are often housed within a single module. In many cases, these modules are mounted INSIDE the fuel tank and must be extracted if there is a problem. Vehicle Manufacturers usually (hopefully) provide an access hatch in the floor pan of the vehicle (usually beneath the rear seat) to gain access to the tank and pump module. But, what if there is no access hatch? Answer - the fuel tank must be physically removed from the vehicle. How does a mechanic working alone remove a fuel tank containing 80 litres of fuel when there are no drain plugs on a modern day plastic fuel cell? This task can be very time consuming and therefore costly. Earlier this week, I replaced the fuel pump module on a popular vehicle - the Holden VE Commodore Sedan and documented the process to show what is involved. Fortunately, the customer had driven the fuel level down to the "low fuel warning" point, which made my life a little easier. I hope this post is of interest and goes someway to explaining what is necessary if a guy like me ever says "Your fuel pump is suspect and should be replaced". See more

05.01.2022 Job of the Week - Oil leaks from a vehicle's drive-line can be unsightly, messy, difficult to diagnose and expensive to repair. Whether it be the engine, transmission, differential, power steering system or suspension - if it contains oil, then the possibility of a leak occurring is always present. Engine oil leaks are very common. This post deals with the rectification of an oil leak stemming from the Rear Main Engine Oil Seal, or "Rear Main" as it is commonly referred to. Its quite a big job. The vehicle is a late model Commodore Utility, V6 Engine, Manual Transmission. The job takes about 4 hours and this is how I do the repair.
