24.01.2022 UPDATE! Thank you to everyone who has donated, sent support and love to this project, WE HAVE REACHED OUR GOAL Everyone has been so kind and positive from... all corners of the globe about this special project and the revival of this beautiful handicraft. Through this post we have introduced many to the Assuit, who had never heard of it. I have LOTS of names to go in the draw and I will keep you all posted on the draw date coming really soon!! Once again thank you from everyone of the women involved and myself If anyone is visiting Cairo and would like to visit and meet the ladies, do let me know! I will keep everyone updated on our progress through my page dedicated to this Absolute Assuit! Love Lei Traysi Assuit Fundraiser! Win a beautiful shawl!!! Hello family, friends and Assuit lovers! Two months ago I started a co operative near my home in Cairo, with local underprivileged women making the handicraft unique to Egypt Tulle bi Tally or Assuit, an embroidery using metal thread. This gorgeous handicraft was a near extinct art form by the 1990s but thanks to a UNICEF/UNESCO funding initiative to save the craft around the city Asyut where it once flourished, 100s of women were taught how to make and sell the product in Tally houses, to support themselves and their families to give new life to this beautiful, unique forgotten cloth. After the Unicef initiative finished a lot of the women stopped working, as the monthly wage paid to them through funding came to an end. Today there are only a handful of workshops and Tally houses left of women who genuinely love making the handicraft and continue to keep producing and selling it. I went on a mission, to travel to Asyut in search of these Tally houses and was so fortunate to meet the women, hear their stories and even more fortunate that I was offered an internship to learn to make the once forgotten Assuit craft. After my internship got underway, I paid for two family members who showed interest, to learn with me. Since then, Ive started the cooperative and it has taken off, I now have 14 ladies from a variety of backgrounds, learning how to embroider using the metal thread which is extremely exciting and rewarding for me. This opportunity has given the women great purpose in their day and a huge sense of achievement and independence financially. Yay!!! I am currently supplying all materials to complete the shawls. I pay each an agreed fair trade price on their finished product depending how much work is in each shawl. I am now hoping to set them up on how to sell their product locally in the tourist market here in Cairo, whilst I can also market the product to a western audience who love these shawls, which they could not do themselves. Boja and I are currently providing our unused apartment in the family home as the workshop for the ladies to use rent free. I am unable to fully fund the next step for the women to become self sufficient and I am hoping to raise funds on behalf of 7500 Egyptian pound, which is NZ$750 to buy 4 items they need: -An overlocker sewing machine 3000 to 4000 (would be second hand) -A wooden embroidery loom for large 1 and 2 meter shawls 2000 -Two wooden tables and a portable light for the group to work 1500 As a thank you for every $10 donation, you will get a ticket into a draw to win a beautiful Assuit Wrap/shawl handmade by these fabulous women, the more you donate the more chances to win! Once the target is reached we will do the draw live from the New Tally House. Any small amount would be hugely appreciated and would go a long way to helping these women to sustain a future for themselves. If you would like to Donate you can via Cash- Carol Hall internet banking- kiwibank 38 9005 0606029 00 T l Ewayan Or PayPal @ [email protected]

19.01.2022 A tribute to our birthday angel Xaeda!! As many of you know, the studio suffered flood damage 4 weeks ago, and was resembling more a Palace of Faded Grandeur, than of Palatial Opulence. Just before that storm, an angel, called Xaeda, spontaneously (and intuitively) gifted her beautiful artworks to the Palace, sent in a package left in our building foyer. We love you Xaeda Raqasa, you have sparkled and goldened our studio. Happy Birthday dear Friend!!

16.01.2022 Boxes from Cairo! Weve received some treasures from Egypt, in 2 Aramex boxes, & it felt like finding a message in a bottle, washed up on the sand.... A message from a far away land Ive had the privilege of visiting twice a year (last year with Amera!), to source stock for the Palace. I had a little happy cry as I opened the boxes and smelt the familiar scent of Mahmouds emporium. Behab Misr, I love you Egypt, and I look forward to visiting your shores again... when we can, Ali xx.

11.01.2022 Join Josie this Saturday 11th January at her only workshop in Australia this trip! From Josie: I never thought I would be sharing and teaching here in my home country during such a time of tragedy. My heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by the fires. One of my brothers lost his holiday home in the blue Mountains the week before Christmas, and the other was evacuated to a shopping center with 3 week old twins in Melbourne on one of their 30 degree days. Since... then South East NSW and North East VIC has been burning and I can hardly believe it. A friend in Terrigal is putting up an evacuee, another friends husband is fighting in the RFS and came home so tired yesterday that even after 10 hrs sleep he can't get up. My Stepmom cant go home to Canberra as she is asthmatic and the air quality is too dangerous for her. Friends from the US have been writing to me in disbelief at the images and the 1/2 million animal lost statistic. It is an unprecedented time. I have been in shock for weeks and although the tears are there, I can't cry when I watch the news. Perhaps you feel the same. I'm sure you are living your own stories of this time too. I planned an event last year for 1.11 in Sydney while I am here, and we are still going ahead. Any evacuees are welcome to come as our guest. We will be dedicating our dance to Nature and to the grief of various kinds we are all feeling. Even in these times, working out feelings through moving our bodies is so important. Being together in a circle of women is so deeply healing too. Bring all of it with you. The sadness, the rage, the shock, the wildness bubbling up in response to looking at fire. If you know anyone in Sydney or surrounds who may want to join me for the 1:11 Dance workshop please share the event details below. Experience the healing of a sisterhood Circle in times of trouble. Evacuees are welcome for no charge as our guests. Evacuees please email me at [email protected]. https://www.facebook.com/events/2785570411465702/ 10906234_10153013602833958_4187841674426702806_n.jpg

07.01.2022 Dear Palace Students, A short message regarding COVID-19... We know you are taking your own due diligence with regards to COVID- 19. At the Palace we are continuing our belly dancing classes. Our beautiful studio is big, windows will be open (therefore there will be plenty of air circulating) and we are increasing our hygiene standards. There is no physical contact required in belly dance, and there is plenty of potential personal space at the Palace Studio.... If youve had any risk of exposure to COVID-19, or are showing symptoms of illness, please stay at home and contact your teacher for online access to filmed live classes. For those attending studio classes, although you will be seeing friends there, please minimise physical contact. Think of it as an opportunity to use your sexy eyes, snake arms, snake eyes (snake everything really) and shimmies. Please don't forget about the importance of moving your body and exercising with pleasure. This plays a big role in our overall health and wellbeing. Enjoy the rest of Term One, either at the studio or online. We are planning an exciting Term 2, and an exciting future at the Palace. With love and best health, The Palace Team
