25.01.2022 Has it ever occurred to you to wonder how on earth 'parlare con le mani' (talking with the hands) can be a genetically inherited trait in Italians? This video goes a long way to explaining how it is actually passed on generation to generation. https://www.facebook.com//__cft__[0]=AZUYpo3pyFdGcuIF3zJGX

24.01.2022 OUR 2020 ITALY TOURS - NORTHERN ICONS Our Venice hotel has a great location. It's in a quiet little enclave that's missed by the multitude of day visitors who tramp through Venice daily. It's 350 metres from a vaporetto (water bus) stop. Popular bars and restaurants are close by. And it's on a canal. Perfetto. For more information about our 2020 Italy tours, see our website www.amicitours.com.au

24.01.2022 Fiumicino is a charming town. It has beaches, and an important fishing fleet that helps to feed the city of Rome. You can enjoy a very well-priced dinner of seafood fresh off the boats, at one of the many fish restaurants in the town. The photos show a seafood salad from La Scorpacciata restaurant, and takeaway fried calamari from GePaGi.

23.01.2022 Because of the pandemic, we don't know if we’ll be able to run our Italy tours in 2021. However, with quite a bit of time on our hands, we’ve been revamping the itinerary for our northern Italy tour. If we can’t offer it in 2021, we hope to offer it in 2022. In addition to our old favourites, the new itinerary will include Cinque Terre, Milan, Lake Como and a train ride in the spectacular Alps. Photo shows Lecco, the Lake Como town where our group will stay.

20.01.2022 OUR 2020 ITALY TOURS - HEEL OF THE BOOT Here's one of our lovely 2019 tourers at Alberobello in Puglia. It's such a pretty photo. We will again visit Alberobello with our 2020 tour group. The very old houses with the unusual conical rooves in the photo are called 'trulli'. They are also sometimes rather rudely known as 'gnome's houses' because they are small. There's an interesting reason for their unusual construction, you can find out what it is if you come to Alberobello with us! 18.01.2022 AMICI TOURS 2020 ITALY TOURS CANCELLED Sadly, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are forced to cancel our 2020 tours. People who were booked with us have been informed of this on Friday and will be fully refunded. We plan to run all three of our Italy tours again in September 2021. Keep an eye on our website for details of next year's tours. www.amicitours.com.au Our thoughts are with the people in Italy and we wish them well. Love to all our friends in Italy.

16.01.2022 If you've been with us to Sicily, you'll recognise our wonderful guide for Valley of the Temples, Lorenzo Capraro. Here he is baking bread with his dad. They've been in lockdown since 9th March, but Lorenzo says they are keeping positive and busy. We are hoping we can go back to Sicily, with a tour group, and see all our friends again in 2021. 16.01.2022 No Time to Die - James Bond 007. Very sadly, we were kept well out of the action, so we won't be seeing ourselves in the movie. But we sure heard the roaring motor of the classic Aston Martin DB5 during filming of the chase scene. The sound reverberated off the ancient stone houses. Grace rushed to look over a parapet, and caught a glimpse of the silver car as it disappeared around a bend of the street below us. Photo 1 - filming of the car chase scene. Photo 2 - there were actually 3 identical Aston Martins available (with same number plates) in case of unexpected mishaps.

15.01.2022 OUR 2020 ITALY TOURS - NORTHERN ICONS Introducing our Venice hotel, Hotel Ca' D'Oro. There's a lot to like, including large rooms (by Venice standards) and traditional Venetian décor. It has a small roof terrace with a big view, which is just right to enjoy a sundowner after your day of sight-seeing. For more information about our 2020 Italy tours, see our website www.amicitours.com.au

15.01.2022 No Time to Die - James Bond 007. Here is director Cary Fukunaga (on left) with the movie's stars Lea Seydoux and Daniel Craig. And our little group, on the same day. In the background of both photos, you can see the Sassi of Matera. Our group was in Matera on our 'Heel of the Boot' tour, which visits the region of Puglia in southern Italy, as well as Matera (in the neighbouring region of Basilicata).

15.01.2022 Andrea Bocelli performed Amazing Grace in front of Milan Cathedral on Easter Sunday. If you're a fan of Andrea, or of Amazing Grace, this performance is special. And even if you're not, the visuals are very moving. Highly recommended.

15.01.2022 ITALIAN CONVERSATION GROUP Do you live in Port Macquarie or surrounding district? Do you know some Italian and would like to practise your conversation skills? We're hoping to start up an Italian conversation group. The idea is we will meet at a venue such as a cafe. There will be no charge for participating, just buy your own refreshments. No need to be fluent, no need to have mastered all the grammar, but an ability to converse at a basic level at least on a variety of topics will be useful. Nothing high-falutin', but personal topics such as hobbies, travel, food, family. We will all improve with practice. Please let us know if this sounds like you! You can click on the SEND MESSAGE button below. Lou took this photo last October in a small street in Cagliari, Sardegna.

13.01.2022 18-year-old guitar player Jacopo Mastrangelo has been performing on a rooftop above Piazza Navona in Rome each afternoon during the lockdown. The videos of his performances are so popular he is now a star on social media. He says 'An empty piazza is more scary than a full piazza'. If you like his music, you can search his name on YouTube and you'll find many recent performances!

10.01.2022 Are you thinking wistfully about a trip to Europe? If your plans for the return journey to Australia involve flying into Rome Airport and overnighting before boarding an international flight the next morning, here's an idea. Instead of transferring into Rome and back again, you could stay in the village of Fiumicino, which is near the airport. You'll save 60-70 euros in transfers, the hotels are cheaper, and you can get out of bed later the next morning.

10.01.2022 In Italy under lockdown, some of the professional musicians have been giving performances from their balconies. In this home video, operatic tenor Maurizio Marchini treats his neighbours to a rendition of Nessun Dorma. Such a beautiful song, and a beautiful voice.

07.01.2022 OUR 2020 ITALY TOURS - SUNNY SOUTH All our tour guides are fantastic! This is Lorenzo Capraro, our guide at Valley of the Temples in Sicily. He makes the temples' history come to life. For more information about our 2020 Italy tours, see our website www.amicitours.com.au

06.01.2022 OUR 2020 ITALY TOURS - HEEL OF THE BOOT This tour takes you to Puglia and Matera. Are you thinking you've never heard of Puglia? Many English-speakers know it as Apulia. Apulia is the Latin name, and the modern Italians say Puglia. It doesn't matter which you use! Puglia is a traditional agricultural region and produces much of the wine, olive oil, tomatoes, seafood and other fresh produce of Italy. For more information about our 2020 Italy tours, see our website www.amicitours.com.au

05.01.2022 OUR 2020 ITALY TOURS - HEEL OF THE BOOT The venue for our dinner/wine-tasting in Lecce (a town in Puglia) is Il Ristoro dei Templari. Here they serve local produce from the Salento Peninsula, absolutely fresh and expertly prepared. For more information about our 2020 Italy tours, see our website www.amicitours.com.au

05.01.2022 OUR 2020 ITALY TOURS - HEEL OF THE BOOT Includes 3 nights in Lecce on the Salento Peninsula. One beaut experience there will be tasting of local Salento wines, accompanied by dinner, at Il Ristoro dei Templari restaurant. Our excellent waiter is Gianmarco. For more information about our 2020 Italy tours, see our website www.amicitours.com.au

05.01.2022 We thought you might enjoy seeing and hearing some of the communal singing from windows and balconies that's been going on in Italy as people try to maintain social contact and keep their spirits up despite the lockdown.

04.01.2022 Another Etna eruption the other day, on August 20. Etna erupts regularly. Apparently the emission included volcanic sand, and the pink colour was because it was reflecting the sunset. This beautiful photo was taken from via Etnea in the eastern Sicilian city of Catania, and the photographer was Fabio Panebianco. Sorry, I tried to post this earlier and the photo didn't appear. I think it's OK this time.

04.01.2022 You may have seen a news story today about a major Australian travel company withholding thousands of dollars when refunding people for tours unable to go ahead because of Covid-19. This is not an isolated case, there have been many unhappy customers of travel companies and airlines in Australia. WE SIMPLY WANT TO SAY, WE REFUNDED IN FULL THE DEPOSITS THAT PEOPLE HAD PAID FOR THE 2020 AMICI TOURS. We cancelled the tours on 13th March and paid the refunds on 18th March.

02.01.2022 Our new itinerary for the Northern Icons tour includes a train ride into the Alps, crossing into Switzerland, and traversing the famous Brusio Spiral Viaduct (pictured). The train doubles back on itself to change altitude over a short distance. This will be a day outing from Lake Como and we will travel on the regionale train that the local people use (pictured here). Let us know if you would like to be placed on the email list to see the draft itinerary when more complete.

02.01.2022 When we were in Matera, southern Italy last September with our small group, the new James Bond film 'No Time to Die' was actually being filmed on location there. This caused some inconvenience - our guide had to re-route our walking tour as a particular road was closed to the public - but it also provided some excitement! The movie was scheduled to be released in April this year but has been postponed until November due to the pandemic.
