25.01.2022 On 27 August we wrote to Minister for Agriculture, David Littleproud, urging the Minister to include the Mid Coast NSW Local Government Area in the Government's $3000 drought relief scheme. We told the Minister of the struggles faced by our members in Mid Coast NSW, particularly the workers of Wingham Beef Exports. You can read our letter at this link:... https://www.facebook.com//a.378602495505/3510242585674691/ We have received a response from the Minister, which basically says tough luck. The Minister referred to the original decision not to include Mid Coast NSW as it was based on 'robust methodology'. This is totally at odds with the reality being faced by these workers and many other meatworkers across NSW unable to access the $3000 drought relief payment. Again the National Party has proven they are out of touch with country workers and communities. We did not even receive a response from the two local National Party sitting members, David Gillespie and Stephen Bromhead. We will keep you updated as to our response from here and any other avenues for drought-affected workers to access support.

20.01.2022 $6 million Retail Ready facility for NCMC Northern Co-operative Meat Company Ltd (NCMC) has received a financial boost to upgrade their production facilities. F...ederal Member for Page Kevin Hogan and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack today visited NCMC following the final approval of $1.55 million in Federal Government funding. The funding will be for the construction of a state-of-the-art retail ready processing room on the casino site. NCMC will contribute $4.78 million towards this project. The project will secure 41 FTE roles in the business creating a significant positive ripple effect in the community, which has unemployment increasing as a result of Covid-19, so this project is vital to the community. The investment will generate over $2.7 million spent on wages and is critical to keep manufacturing in regional areas. With a local economy multiplier of 4 this will generate $10.8 million to the local economy from the wages alone, thus delivering improvements to the community both socially and economically. The co-operative is owned by over 800 producer members that are impacted by the seasonal nature of agriculture. This project offers improved diversified income that will benefit the co-operative and subsequently members. Chairman, John Seccombe CEO, Simon Stahl Photos: 1. And Warrnambool-based beef and sheeepmeat processor Midfield Meat International has also closed as a precaution, despite having no positive COVID-19 cases, after a meat inspector connected with the Colac outbreak briefly worked at its plant. 17.01.2022 Many women whose visa status relies upon their partner are subjected to domestic abuse and have no place to turn. Intouch Multicultural Centre Against Family Violence is calling for the Government to introduce a two-year visa with Centrelink rights, working rights and health rights. This would enable women on partner visas to overcome the experience of family violence and take control of their lives.... The acting Minister for Immigration, Alan Tudge, has said there are provisions in place to grant permanent visas to women in these situations who experience domestic violence. However many women are unable to access this support as they do not hold the correct visa type. Many more don't know where to turn or are too afraid to speak out. If you or someone you know needs help with domestic violence you can reach out and call us on 4929 5496, or any of the numbers pictured. The AMIEU will always stand up for any member experiencing domestic violence. Read more: https://www.abc.net.au//calls-for-changes-to-prot/12798036

14.01.2022 A wrongful death lawsuit at a Tyson Foods pork processing facility in Waterloo, USA, has revealed Management placed bets on how many workers at the factory would test positive for COVID 19. Five workers have died, over 1000 have contracted the virus so far. Supervisors were directed to ignore COVID-19 symptoms, telling workers to show up even if they were sick. Management even created a $500 bonus for employees who attended all their shifts over three months, a policy create...d purposefully to encourage sick workers to come in. The lawsuit alleges that Tyson required employees to work long hours in cramped conditions without appropriate PPE despite the rapid spread of COVID-19 throughout the facility. In the midst of the Waterloo sites outbreak, the Plant Manager organised a cash-buy-in, winner takes all betting pool for supervisors to bet on how many workers would become sick. 14.01.2022 We are calling for the workers of Wingham Beef Exports to be included in the Salvation Army, Saint Vincent de Paul Society and Government's $3000 drought relief payment. We have written to Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud MP, Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead MP and Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie MP making this request. Our members at Wingham Beef Exports and thousands of other workers in the Mid Coast NSW Local Government Area have been inexplica...bly excluded from this drought relief payment. We know first hand how these workers have suffered the ongoing effects of drought and lack of cattle to provide stable work. They need immediate assistance from Government. NSW Senator Tim Ayres has already expressed his support for this campaign, we need those in power to follow suit. We also invite Manning River Times, Wingham Chronicle and Manning Community News to get behind this initiative and lobby for immediate assistance.

11.01.2022 We have some disappointing news to share with you. This morning the High Court handed down a decision that means Australian shift workers will be entitled to le...ss than 10 days sick leave each year. The NES says full-time and part-time workers are entitled to 10 days personal leave. The issue here was how to calculate those entitlements. We argued that a 'day' was your normal working hours. Work a 12 hours shift? That's what you should get when you need a day off. Big business wanted to short change people working outside a standard 9-5 job by claiming a day was only 7.6 hours. Unfortunately, they won. The AMWU, along with Cadbury workers Brendan and Natasha (pictured), have been fighting this for a few years now. We won in both the Fair Work Commission and the Federal Court. We are so proud of our delegates standing up against a big company like Cadbury that had the backing of the Federal Government all the way. This decision will affect workers working ordinary days of more than the standard 7.6 hours. That's a lot of people. We are now calling for the Federal Government to amend the Fair Work Act so that every worker has access to 10 days of paid personal leave every year, no matter what hours they work. COVID-19 has shown the importance of personal leave. The Government must change the law immediately to ensure that no matter whether you work 7.6 hours a day or 12 hours a day, youve got access to ten days of personal leave per year.
11.01.2022 JBS to close Brooklyn and Dinmore processing plants In a sharp reminder of how tough the Australian red meat processing environment is at present, JBS Austra...lia has confirmed it will close two of its flagship Australian red meat processing facilities, for different reasons. The companys Dinmore plant west of Brisbane easily the largest beef processing facility in Australia, with normal daily operating capacity of 3400 head will shut for at least a fortnight from Monday 24 August, as the processing industry continues to struggle to raise viable kills in the face of a drought-impacted livestock supply. 06.01.2022 From Monday, September 28, both JobKeeper and JobSeeker subsidies will be slashed. Roughly 8.2 million Australians are currently receiving JobSeeker or Jobkeeper. JobKeeper will be cut from $1100 a fortnight to $800.... JobSeeker will be cut from $1500 a fortnight to $1200 for Full-Time workers and $750 for Part-Time workers (under 20 hours a week before the pandemic). With 30% of Experts are predicting the JobKeeper cut to create a large spike in business failures, putting more Australians out of work. The cut to JobSeeker means those who are struggling most to pay their bills and provide for their families will face an even more difficult time in the months ahead.
