23.01.2022 Our littlest lady; Livia Kate came into our world 15th May 2018. A perfect little package at 2985grams (6 pounds, 3 ounces). Shes doing amazingly well and were all completely in love. 20.01.2022 And this is why you should never base a diagnosis solely on imaging alone. What may appear as abnormal may in fact be entirely normal!! Pain is your bodies inbuilt warning system - and more often than not the bodies way of compensating for an undying issue. Its time we looked past the symptomatic pain and started looking at the big picture. Look for relationships between bodily systems and learnt movement patterns, nothing in isolation. There is no doubt that our brain learns pain. Fix the patterning = learn new sensations = unlearn the pain. Food for thought. Thanks for sharing this one @ape.medical

13.01.2022 6 weeks postpartum and so excited to be back in the studio!!! Baby no. 3 and Im not joking when I say Pilates has been my saviour!! #prenatalpilates Im remaining very conscious of not overdoing things at this early stage. Im staying well clear of my full range through lumbar extension, spinal rotations and of course Im avoiding any form of forceful abdominal curls until my lumbo-pelvic stability and abdominal tone allows. ... Weirdly I have felt more in-tune with my body with each pregnancy and have learnt(sometimes the hard way), how to modify my movements accordingly. You can never imagine how much you learn about your body, its capabilities (and its limitations!) having experienced growing a baby, birthing and now the rehab! I have experienced significant diastasis of the rectus abdominus muscle (separation of the 6-pack muscle) through each of my pregnancies - but Ive also been able to find incredible strength and stability after this (which I have no doubt Ill achieve again). Its about knowing your body inside and out and having the proprioceptive awareness to control end range movements which provides that real feeling of strength and stability postpartum - I honestly dont know any better way of achieving this than through structured clinical Pilates. #clinicalpilates How amazing to be able to take my gorgeous Livia Kate into the studio and stare lovingly at each other while we both explore our movement and develop strength and body awareness. 04.01.2022 How do I get a strong core? If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me this?!!! Firstly - its not a matter of strength - its a matter of recruitment - but more on that another day. ... News flash - Our deep local stabilisers (core) are largely not under our conscious control - the concept of attempting to teach you to turn on your core for the most part is completely flawed - Sorry guys!! Its not as simple as sucking your tummy in - if anyone ever tells you to just suck your tummy in - please run a mile. But bare with me here - throughout our day you want these muscles to be firing appropriately at a subconscious level - after all, who has time to stop and tell well over 15 muscles to switch on for basically every movement task you attempt . These muscles are inherently reactive in nature - meaning they activate in response to feedback. Theyre the automatic muscles and thats exactly the way you want it! When your brain receives afferent nerve feedback about your environment and the task at hand; they will in turn switch on to stabilise your joints and allow free movement. Dont get me wrong - Im completely all for teaching people how to turn these muscles on in a rehab setting (I do this everyday) but unfortunately to completely rehabilitate someone it cant stop there, we need to facilitate transfer from the clinical environment to everyday life - the very crux of functional rehab!!! So how can we ensure the core training were doing is actually working and our core is actually getting stronger - well there are many ways, but here is one to get you started - go barefoot!!! Seriously - Get barefoot guys!! On as many different surfaces as possible. Everyday!!! (And please, please this includes our children - get them out of that restrictive, overprotective footwear, so many problems start here!!!!) The soles of our feet have over 200,000 nerve endings! Thats comparable to your hands or your lips. These nerves send information to your brain about where your body is in space and in relation to your surroundings (proprioception) and what does your brain do with this information? It responds with a motor output. If youre moving consciously and with intention (hopefully putting some of your Pilates training into practice) barefoot movement - will improve recruitment of your core muscles. Switch on your feet = switch on your core!! Oh and how awesome is Pilates - its basically barefoot, whole body training on steroids - so much proprioceptive input - no wonder its so effecting at switching our core on!! Here I am enjoying a beautiful foot mobilisation with knee drops followed by foot work on the push through bar - this exercise always allows me to tune into those all important deep lumbo-pelvic stabilisers. Its basic really. More info in = improved proprioception = more motor out = improved recruitment = improved control = improved strength = happiness.
