25.01.2022 You might have entered a Courtroom in the past, or perhaps you have passed a courthouse and seen lawyers wearing wigs and about to enter. If so, then you might wonder, why does a lawyer wear a wig? Well first up on this is the fact that its generally only barristers that wear their wigs, solicitors hardly ever wear wigs. In fact, our law firm Principal- Matthew doesnt even own a wig despite a lot of our work being in the litigation area. Wearing a wig is someth...ing that has been hand down as a part of the tradition we have adopted here in Australia as if part of our legal system which was inherited from the United Kingdom. This is different to the position in the United States. For example, you might have been a legal show enthusiast and watched one of the programmes like Suits, Boston Legal, Ally McBeal or one of the plethora of movies about lawyers. If you have, then you might have noticed the barristers wigs are not worn in those sets. A barristers wig is really just part of their uniform because barristers also wear formal black silk gowns and bar jackets. Even throughout this current COVID 19 pandemic where most court appearances and hearings have taken place online, barristers have continued wearing their formal dress when in a court hearing, albeit online. We are saying this because it’s best to know these new laws right up front, especially if you are involved as a COMPANY DIRECTOR or someone who might be considering becoming a director over the coming years.... The new Director Identification Number (DIN) will enter into force on June 22, 2022. All Directors of companies will need to apply for and successfully obtain their own unique number, or DIN, as a form of identification and activity tracing. In summary, the new Part 9.1A of the Corporations Act, from the date of application, requires: existing directors must apply for a DIN within a prescribed period persons appointed as directors within 12 months of the application date to apply for a DIN within 28 days of their appointment; and persons appointed as directors after 12 months of the application date may apply for a DIN before being appointed director. If you fail to apply for and comply with these new DIN laws when they come into force, you might potentially face both civil and criminal penalties. We suggest a proper consideration needs to be given based on the cultural significance of the Aboriginal flag especially in the context of the copyright which has been licensed.
