16.01.2022 The best way to have a healthy lawn and garden through the hot season is with regular maintenance! Here are a few tips: MOW REGULARLY. - Cutting more than a third of the grass height when mowing causes the turf stress. - This is why it is so important to mow regularly as stress will lead to easy burning and susceptibility to disease and wear. ... - This will leave you with a patchy lawn giving space for weeds to grow! WATER! - Always check your Local Restrictions but if you are able to water Early Morning or Late Afternoon are the best times. - There will be less evaporation from the heat of the day so the soil can take in more moisture. This applies to gardens. - It is ideal to give the grass a soaking as this will promote the roots to grow deeper. - Make sure to water the edges of the grass especially up against concrete as they will be the hottest. - Using a wetting agent will help but is not a substitute for regular watering. It helps water and nutrients move through the soil better. CLEANUP! - A garden generates a lot of waste. - With the fire warnings and current weather its a good idea to get all of your dead green waste removed. - Regular hedging will help them to hold shape and fill out any bare spots. - Pruning will help to keep plants and trees healthy. - Cut off dead branches or remove dead palm fronds regularly to reduce waste build up. The QLD Fire Department has issued warnings for people to keep houses clear of rubbish and green waste. Here is a list to reduce some hazards: Remove rubbish from around the house Remove any dead trees, shrubs, leaves or plants from ... your garden or verandas Remove branches overhanging the house Remove leaves from gutters Keep the exits of your home clear from any clutter Throw away old BBQs, lawn furniture or wood you no longer use or require Keep safe If you are concerned or know people who live in areas more likely to be affected by fires in Brisbane and are unable to remove the rubbish and green waste themselves we are more than happy to help.
