18.01.2022 Breastfeeding might be natural, but it doesn't mean it's easy. Both mom and baby might have to practise and develop this skill overtime. For some it happens straightaway but for most it might take some time. Watch this useful video on latch: https://youtu.be/wjt-Ashodw8

IBCLCs help with: Prenatal counseling about the factors that may affect breastfeeding, chestfeeding, and lactation Basic position and latch of the infant Information about practices that promote successful lactation Preventing and managing common concerns such as poor latch, inadequate milk transfer or supply, nipple or breast/chest pain, and calming a fussy baby Milk expression and storage for parents who must be separated from their babies Strategies for lactation after returning to work Breastfeeding and lactation in challenging situations, such as feeding twins or triplets, a premature or sick infant, or infants in special medical situations. 12.01.2022 "Is my latch okay"?she asks, looking at me with worry in her eyes. "How does it feel", I ask her? No matter what the latch looks like to me as an IBCLC, the most important factors to a good latch is: is it effective? - baby actually putting weight on without formula required? - enough wet/solied nappies? ... is it comfortable? -there is a misconception that breastfeeding should be absolutely painfree. The first few weeks , breasts can have mild discomfort. All suddenly you have this baby sucking milk out of your nipples like a leach almost constantly. ..its something that those nipples not been exposed to before. However unbearable pain with visable nipple damage indicated that something in the latch needs to change. Few important manoeuvres to consider during each latch is: - Tilt your baby's head back slightly so his chin touches the underside of your breast. - Your nipple should be sitting slightly above your baby's upper lip. - Wait for your baby to open his mouth wide with his tongue forward and down. Your baby's mouth should look like he is yawning. - As soon as your baby's mouth is open wide, aim your nipple to the roof of his mouth and quickly pull him towards you (rather than bringing your breast to him) . - Move baby's head and body together in a straight line so you are tummy to tummy to eachother. Your nipple and areola should be in his mouth. His chin should be touching your breast and he should be able to look you in the eyes. - Now relax and enjoy your time together. Som IBCLC

04.01.2022 A very common concern I get from moms that start supplementing. " I don't think I'm producing enough, my baby feeds every 20 minutes" Sometimes mummas don't get a break from breastfeeding and it can get so overwhelming and play on our mental health. Breastfeeding is described by most mums as the hardest thing they had to do. All the doubt that also rises with it when a baby constantly wants to eat. ... We have to understand that babies dont only feed for nutrition. Breastfeeding is also their source of comfort, painrelief, warmth, familiarity. Then there is also growth spurts. Typical ages for infant growth spurts are around 2-3 weeks, 6 weeks, and 9 weeks. During these times your baby may want to eat more so your body knows to produce more milk. Trust your body and gage your milk production with wet/soiled nappies. ALSO STOP COMPARING your baby to others. Breastmilk is easier to digest than formula, so breastfed babies will need shorter intervals between feeds BUT also all babies are different in their nature. Some need more companionship, some are just fine in their own space. Som IBCLC

03.01.2022 The theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2020 is Support breastfeeding for a healthier planet. In line with this theme, WHO and UNICEF are calling on governments to protect and promote womens access to skilled breastfeeding counselling, a critical component of breastfeeding support. Breastfeeding provides every child with the best possible start in life. It delivers health, nutritional and emotional benefits to both children and mothers. And it forms part of a sustainable foo...d system. But while breastfeeding is a natural process, it is not always easy. Mothers need support both to get started and to sustain breastfeeding. Skilled counselling services can ensure that mothers and families receive this support, along with the information, the advice, and the reassurance they need to nourish their babies optimally. Breastfeeding counselling can help mothers to build confidence while respecting their individual circumstances and choices. Counselling can empower women to overcome challenges and prevent feeding and care practices that may interfere with optimal breastfeeding, such as the provision of unnecessary liquids, foods, and breastmilk substitutes to infants and young children. Contact a IBCLC to provide you support.

03.01.2022 **PHARMACY 777 PARENTS GROUP IS BACK ON! ** The saying It takes a village to raise a child is still true possibly truer than ever, but many of us dont have... the village we so desperately need. We used to watch our mother, aunts, cousins or other village members care for newborns. Now, few mothers have close or familiar parenting role models. Our aim at Pharmacy 777 is to create that much needed village by gathering mothers/fathers in our community. This way we can work through challenges in early parenthood and help eachother to normalise it. NEXT SESSION IS DUE 6th JULY AT 11AM. Morning tea will be provided. Call 93491570 to book or just meet infront of the pharmacy. #communitylove #community #mothersgroup #parentsgroup #earlyparenthood #nollamara

01.01.2022 La leche groups recommendations around breastfeeding during illness. "If someone who is breastfeeding becomes ill, it is important not to interrupt direct breastfeeding. The baby has already been exposed to the virus by the mother and/or family and will benefit most from continued direct breastfeeding".

01.01.2022 The size of your breasts is irrelevant when it comes to how much milk you make. ... A person with smaller breasts has the same capability to nurse with a great supply as a person with larger breasts. The size of breasts is based upon the amount of fatty tissue that is contained within them. People with smaller breasts have less fatty tissue, and people with larger breasts have more fatty tissue. Fatty tissue is not responsible for making breast milk, its dependant on glandular tissue. There is a rare genuine condition, where there is problem in milk supply due to insufficient glandular tissue IGT/Hypoplasia. Most mothers with hypoplasia/IGT are still able to offer all feedings at their breasts, regardless of how much milk their breasts actually make, using an at-breast supplementing tool. Get the support from your IBCLC to keep your chestfeeding journey. Regards Som Ibclc
