Last year taught us that we truly never know what’s around the corner, but looking back, I am delighted to reflect on what was achieved thanks to your kindness and generosity. As the threat of COVID-19 became a reality, our researchers were very conscious that their vital research had to continue. They quickly established COVIDSafe work protocols and ensured as much research could safely continue throughout the Victorian restrictions as possible. And Peter Mac’s role as a global leader in cancer research and care continued despite the pandemic. As an example, Associate Professor David Gyorki is playing a leading role as part of an international research collaboration to better understand rare cancers. This is an important research focus, investigating cancers that can be difficult to diagnose and treat. Mario, you make all of this possible. It is only through the support of amazing individuals that Peter Mac will achieve our goal of a cancer-free world. In another display of extraordinary support, our Unite to Fight Cancer event was held in October. Although it looked a little different in 2020, participants clocked up an astounding 312,685 km between them and raised an incredible $1.8 million for vital cancer research a truly tremendous result. With such incredible support, our researchers are ready to start 2021 with the renewed possibility of exciting new innovations and discoveries. They will continue to generate new discoveries that move us closer to a cancer-free future. Cancer patients will have access to exciting clinical trials and families will have more hope of a cure thanks to new research discoveries.
