22.01.2022 While communities of refugee and/or asylum seeker backgrounds are often generalised or referred to as one group in mainstream media, in reality these communitie...s come from a variety of different national, ethnic and religious backgrounds According to the Refugee Council of Australia, the largest number of refugees living in Australia are from Syria (6.65 million), Afghanistan (2.68 million), South Sudan (2.29 million) and Myanmar (1.15 million). In this series, created in collaboration with the @UWA Ethnocultural department, we have tried to highlight and celebrate the rich and diverse cultural backgrounds of Australias refugee communities See more

22.01.2022 "Australias asylum policies are harmful to both refugees and [the] people of Australia, many of whom are ashamed of their governments mistreatment of refugees and the stain left on their history."

15.01.2022 Have you ever met someone who was sunshine in human form? We have. Meet our Secretary, Shelby Pannell. Shelby began her journey with Amnesty as a Fresher in 2019, but her dedication soon saw her take centre stage as one of our key committee members and adopt a pivotal role in inspiring future human rights leaders. Her favourite moment with Amnesty International UWA is our Packs and Snacks event, but were confident that our upcoming events are going to give it a run for its money! To see for yourself, keep an eye on our Facebook page.

14.01.2022 This why we need to pay attention

14.01.2022 It has come to our attention that our upcoming live stream event Rights, Refugees and Rec has attracted some negative comments condemning refugees. Through this event, we want to raise awareness of the refugee crisis and stress the importance of the human right to seek refuge. Amnesty would like to emphasise that all human rights are inherently non-partisan and are not political topics up for debate.... Please refer to the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights for a comprehensive list of our rights as human beings: https://www.un.org/en/universal-declaration-human-rights/

13.01.2022 They say that volunteers dont necessarily have the time, they have the heart, and if thats true, our Campaigns Director definitely has the biggest heart of all! Meet Stacie and her very cute four-legged partner in crime. Standing up for social justice in her local community and the wider world, Stacie started out as a Fresher and quickly worked her way up the Amnesty ranks. If she had to pick a single favourite moment with Amnesty UWA, it would be our flying kites for human rights event, which Stacie devised to support those wrongly arrested and abused during the Hong Kong protests. How awesome is she?!

13.01.2022 WARNING Weve been made aware of several people sharing links that are claiming our Hong Kong discussion event is being live streamed. Do NOT click on any as these are fake.... For security reasons the event is not being filmed, photographed or live streamed in any capacity. Thank you for your attention
