16.01.2022 Question Time Do you know what your dog is specifically bred to do, AND do you fulfil that burning desire inside them? This is my dude, a working line Rottweiler with potent genetics (not the happy go lucky but sometimes timid Rottweiler at the dog park everyday) and he has a strong genetic desire to control and possess. Generally he does this best by using his mouth, and his power. All dogs have a genetic desire to bite and hold, think of a dog needing to feed their famil...y members, they would chase down, bite and hold onto prey to prevent it escaping. In sport dogs, we use this genetic predisposition to encourage that full, firm and calm grip that is so desired. For this guy, barking or rushing at someone suspicious and successfully moving them away is generally enough to satisfy that need to Control. The need to Possess can be fulfilled at most meal and play times, if any other of the dogs approach he will guard his food and/or toys and has been 99% successful in this - I am the 1% he is not to possess over. Bite work is the ultimate outlet for this guy, he enjoys it and he can fulfil majority of these ‘burning desires’ I have referred to. He controls the man and possesses the equipment whilst holding that full grip, and occasionally will drive back in to ensure the prey is absolutely ready to eat. By allowing him to indulge in this activity, I can confidently say I have a happy and content dog, with no reason for him to cause me any issues. (See last photo) What does your dog genetically do? And are you doing your loved breed justice? #rottweiler
