A new paper in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology has found some negative side effects of cynicism. ... Looking at data from the US and Germany shows that people with cynical views of human nature on average suffered a substantial income penalty. The heart of the argument is that cynicism increases distrust which gets in the way of cooperation. One interesting caveat is that people living in countries with the highest murder rates and lowest levels of volunteerism, cynicism wasnt linked to lower income.
