25.01.2022 The team at Cycling Without Age - Gold Coast continues to grow and we are amazed at the talented people who are volunteering to make a difference in the lives o...f others. Our latest graduate from pilot training school is Michael, a very well known and loved local identity. Congratulations on gaining your wings. An avid cyclist for 37 years, Michael loves touring, especially in the European mountains and averages 30,000 km per year on his bicycle. Being such a novice on two wheels, we needed to knock off some of the rough edges, and work on a few of his cycling abilities. He needed to write 50 times after school "Only 10 kph." Michael is a retired primary deputy principal and music teacher and still spends quite a bit of time on campus. We can't make any promises however, if our passengers are really lucky, our newest pilot may even provide some musical accompaniment as part of his repertoire. Welcome to the team Michael, we know how much you are looking forward to being a changemaker and how much our passengers will love the difference you make in their lives. Cycling Without Age Gold Coast needs more pilots and sponsors for trishaws. Don't miss out on this fabulous opportunity. Send an email to [email protected] to find out how you can also become a changemaker. See more

15.01.2022 A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the 4 pups and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driv...ing the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy. "Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your puppies." "Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, "These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money." The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. "I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?" "Sure," said the farmer. And with that he let out a whistle. "Here, Dolly!" he called. Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight. As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up... "I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the runt. The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would." With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands." With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup. Holding it carefully he handed it to the little boy. "How much?" asked the little boy... "No charge," answered the farmer, "There's no charge for love." Author Unknown

13.01.2022 Prisoners at Palen Creek Correctional Centre have been busy turning unwanted bikes into wheelchairs for those in need in developing countries. Queensland Corre...ctive Services: Prisoners at Palen Creek Correctional Centre (PCCC) are helping people in developing countries with mobility issues by transforming unwanted bicycles into wheelchairs. Palen Creek Acting Deputy General Manager Dave Gordon said some of his officers learned of the Wheelchair Aid Project being run by the Rotary Club of Surfers Sunrise and decided to become involved. After learning how to recycle the bicycles into wheelchairs, the officers have been training up the prisoners as part of a community service program, which has since produced 2116 wheelchairs, Mr Gordon said. The Surfers Sunrise Rotary club started this project 22 years ago. Since then, almost 9000 of these mobility aids have been delivered to people in need in East Timor, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa and Africa. PCCC sources the unwanted bicycles from refuse transfer centres, with the permission of local authorities. www.7NEWS.com.au #7NEWS

09.01.2022 It is with great disappointment that we must announce the CANCELLATION of our March 2020 AMP CAMP event. At present the circumstances surrounding Coronavirus (C...OVID-19) in NSW and Australia is evolving in a negative direction and impacting events, travel and day to day activities broadly across the community. This decision is made in consideration of advice from a wide range of appropriate sources including professional health teams and Ministry. Current disruption to flights has also impacted on the ability to coordinate safe camper travel. Please refer to your emails for further information. The health and wellbeing of our campers, volunteers, their families and connected communities is a priority for us. We look forward to rescheduling AMP CAMP and seeing you all hopefully in the near future. See more

05.01.2022 Melissa Davison 11 hrs Re posting to see if I have made it public. LOL I NEED EVERYONE TO SHARE THIS I am a nurse a GCUH. I have been up since 3:30am. While dri...ving home from work this afternoon I decided that today was exhausting and I couldnt be bothered cooking dinner for my family. So, off I went, down to the Chinese restaurant in Highland Park to get takeaway. Ordered the food and stood outside, still in my uniform, feeling bad for the people around me that might has been concerned that I hadnt bothered to change my clothes before stepping out in public. Then, a complete stranger walks up to me, asks me if the ticket in my hand was mine. A little confused, I say, umm yes. This man then basically steals the ticket out of my hand and walks into the restaurant. I thought, oh well, if he takes my food then whatever, Im too tired to be bothered arguing. He then walks out, pats me on the shoulder, he says thanks and walks away. I had ordered over $100 worth of food........... My ticket number was called and not only did I get my food........ I was given the money back! YOU PAID FOR MY DINNER, MY CHILDRENS DINNER, MY HUSBANDS DINNER!!!! I am in total shock, I am completely humbled, I am appreciative beyond words. I got in the car and bawled my eyes out....... and I am still crying as I write this! Its not very often that nurses are thanked. Like genuinely thanked and appreciated. Work today was busy, some moments were hard and all of it was exhausting. Today has also been a moment for me to stop and remember why I became a nurse and the pride and acknowledgement I have for myself. Thank you for reminding me of my core passion I have for my career! I HOPE YOU ARE ON FACEBOOK! I HOPE YOU READ THIS! Can anyone who reads this please post it on other community sites in our area. I NEED TO SAY THANK YOU. Thank you for paying for dinner. More importantly, thank you for reminding me of my passion for my career choice and that there are some wonderful people in this world! Yep...... still crying There are still beautiful people in the world.Gaz See more

04.01.2022 Anyone have a family or friend who needs a peadiatric wheelchair? Rohan has long grown out of his wheelchair and no longer uses it. I know most people get ndis ...funding but there is a lot of people from overseas who aren't eligable for it, so if you are or anyone you know who is on the Gold Coast or surrounding areas in need of a wheelchair for their child I'll be happy to pass his chair on to you. It is a Gold peadiatric quickie, lightweight folding frame, with adjustable locking seatbelt, it's 15'x15', Rohan was roughly 55kgs and 150cm just before he grew out of it, for an idea of the size of the chair, comes with maintaince tools, rear anti tip bars, brakes on both sides. Plastic side guards, a caddy, platform flip up foot rest. He is currently using the basic standard cushion for his loan chair but can give it to you when his new chair comes in. He has put stickers on it which can be removed. It's in very good condition and works perfectly, tyres are fine, I've never had to put air in them, not even sure if you need to maintain these wheels? the chair is only 2 1/2 yrs old. Only issue is with the push handle bars, not sure why but they won't stay locked in place, I'm not sure exactly what the issue is, we never really used them as he is capable of pushing himself around. Pick up in parkwood, will drop off if you are close by. It's very hard for some people to get funding to obtain things like this for their children to get around, so I'm only willing to give it for a child in a family from an overseas country living in australia and unable to get ndis funding and/or centrelink to help. Also appreantly fb marketplace thinks I'm advertising a body organ or trying to do child trafficking so the add was removed, so feel free to share or tag. I would rather see the chair go to a good home than sit and collect dust in the garage because it is in mostly a perfect condition.

03.01.2022 A friend shared this. It touched my soul!!!! You will never look at a fork the same way again! Keep your fork! There was a young woman who had been diag...nosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So as she was getting her things 'in order,' she contacted her Pastor and had him come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes. She told him which songs she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in. Everything was in order and the Pastor was preparing to leave when the young woman suddenly remembered something very important to her. "There's one more thing," she said excitedly.. "What's that?" came the Pastor's reply. "This is very important," the young woman continued. "I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand." The Pastor stood looking at the young woman, not knowing quite what to say. "That surprises you, doesn't it?" the young woman asked. "Well, to be honest, I'm puzzled by the request," said the Pastor. The young woman explained. "My grandmother once told me this story, and from that time on I have always tried to pass along its message to those I love and those who are in need of encouragement. In all my years of attending socials and dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, "Keep your fork." It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming .... like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something wonderful, and with substance!" "So, I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder... "What's with the fork?" Then I want you to tell them: "Keep your fork ... the best is yet to come." The Pastor's eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the young woman good-bye. He knew this would be one of the last times he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the young woman had a better grasp of heaven than he did. She had a better grasp of what heaven would be like than many people twice her age, with twice as much experience and knowledge. She KNEW that something better was coming. At the funeral people were walking by the young woman's casket and they saw the cloak she was wearing and the fork placed in her right hand. Over and over, the Pastor heard the question, "What's with the fork?" And over and over he smiled. During his message, the Pastor told the people of the conversation he had with the young woman shortly before she died. He also told them about the fork and about what it symbolized to her. He told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either. He was right. So the next time you reach down for your fork let it remind you, ever so gently, that the best is yet to come. Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. Cherish the time you have, and the memories you share. Being friends with someone is not an opportunity, but a sweet responsibility. Share this to everyone you consider a FRIEND... and I'll bet this will be a message they do remember, every time they pick up a fork! And just remember ... keep your fork! The BEST is yet to come! #mindset #monday

02.01.2022 In 1990, the high school dropout rate for Dolly Parton's hometown of Sevierville Tennessee was at 34% (Research shows that most kids make up their minds in fift...h/sixth grade not to graduate). That year, all fifth and sixth graders from Sevierville were invited by Parton to attend an assembly at Dollywood. They were asked to pick a buddy, and if both students completed high school, Dolly Parton would personally hand them each a $500 check on their graduation day. As a result, the dropout rate for those classes fell to 6%, and has generally retained that average to this day. Shortly after the success of The Buddy Program, Parton learned in dealing with teachers from the school district that problems in education often begin during first grade when kids are at different developmental levels. That year The Dollywood Foundation paid the salaries for additional teachers assistants in every first grade class for the next 2 years, under the agreement that if the program worked, the school system would effectively adopt and fund the program after the trial period. During the same period, Parton founded the Imagination Library in 1995: The idea being that children from her rural hometown and low-income families often start school at a disadvantage and as a result, will be unfairly compared to their peers for the rest of their lives, effectively encouraging them not to pursue higher education. The objective of the Imagination library was that every child in Sevier County would receive one book, every month, mailed and addressed to the child, from the day they were born until the day they started kindergarten, 100% free of charge. What began as a hometown initiative now serves children in all 50 states, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, mailing thousands of free books to children around the world monthly. On March 1, 2018 Parton donated her 100 millionth book at the Library of Congress: a copy of "Coat of Many Colors" dedicated to her father, who never learned to read or write. Happy 74th Birthday Dolly Parton!
