25.01.2022 ****PREMIERING OUR NEW EHRLICHIOSIS ANIMATION**** We are excited to launch our new animation about the tick-borne disease Ehrlichiosis! This animation has been developed by AMRRIC and collaborating partners to improve knowledge and awareness of Ehrlichiosis, a tick borne disease which was first detected in Australian in May 2020. This disease is carried by brown dog ticks. It infects dogs and can have significant impacts on the health of dogs and potentially humans.... This animation outlines how Ehrlichiosis is transmitted, the signs of sickness that it causes and provides advice on treating and managing this disease. It is relevant for all ages. For their collaboration in the development of this animation, AMRRIC is grateful to: HealthyWA NSW Health NSW Department of Primary Industries Primary Industries and Regions SA Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation Animator Christian Carbajosa #Ehrlichiosis #BrownDogTicks #TickBorneDisease #OneHealth #AMRRICeducation

24.01.2022 Today is #WorldAnimalDay! Here at AMRRIC we are obviously passionate about the health and welfare of animals, which impacts people and communities as well. World Animal Day is a great chance to reflect on the ways that people and animals co-exist; healthy animals means healthy communities!

24.01.2022 You may have noticed that we have been sharing a lot of information about #Ehrlichiosis recently, the tick-borne disease which has been making its way across WA and the NT since it was first detected in the Kimberley last year. Unfortunately, ticks carrying Ehrlichiosis have now been discovered in South Australia as well. The far north regions of SA are where dogs are at highest risk. Primary Industries and Regions SA has more information available at their website here: ... https://www.pir.sa.gov.au//ehrlichiosis_tick_detected_in_s

24.01.2022 Congratulations to all the finalists in the Jetpets Companion Animal Rescue Awards! Last year AMRRIC were proud to win the Innovation in Rescue category and this year CEO Brooke Rankmore was one of the judges. Looking forward to hearing more about all the winners!

24.01.2022 AMRRIC would like to congratulate Dr. Wendy Page, who has just been named the 2021 NT Australian of the Year! Dr. Page works at Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation in North-East Arnhem Land, and the focus of her career has been on #Strongyloidiasis a disease caused by parasitic threadworms called #Strongyloides. Her efforts have been instrumental in reducing the prevalence of strongyloidiasis in local East Arnhem Land communities from 60 per cent to below 10 per cent!... Strongyloidiasis is a disease that people contract when they come into contact with larval Strongyloides in the soil. It often goes undetected as can cause non-specific and generalised clinical signs, but for people who are immunocompromised, Strongyloidiasis can be severe and life threatening. There are many species of Strongyloides, but Strongyloides stercoralis the main species that causes human disease, has also been detected in dogs and other animal species. While research is ongoing, it’s still uncertain what role dogs play in the transmission of the disease, so maintaining good hygiene, wearing shoes when walking on soil and proper faecal management (including that of dogs!) is key to prevention. Dr. Page has also been instrumental in the establishment of nationals workshops for experts to share research findings and better understand strongyloidiasis. AMRRIC’s former Program Manager Dr. Jan Allen presented at one of these workshops in 2018, highlighting AMRRIC’s work in partnership with researchers to identify Strongyloides stercoralis positive dogs, and how a #OneHealth, transdisciplinary approach is beneficial for diseases such as strongyloidiasis. AMRRIC are also proud to have collaborated on a recent education project with Miwatj and applaud both Miwatj and Dr Page for their excellent work. Congratulations again to Dr. Page!

24.01.2022 Happy Saturday! Hope you get a good rest like Rockwell at Tjarlirli Art at Tjukurla in the #WesternDesert!

19.01.2022 We love this post from Papunya Tjupi Arts of these beautiful paintings by Doris Bush Nungarrayi depicting 'Papa Tjukurrpa at Nyunmanu', a Dingo Dreaming site to the south east of Kintore. Most of the dingoes and their pups from this place rose up into the sky and became stars. However, the ancestral mother Dingo and her pup had gone out hunting and were too tired to rise up, so they turned into a large rock that marks the place of this sacred Dreaming. It is said that if you ...sleep in this place you will dream of the ancestral dingo puppies. The story goes that if you remove one of the gleaming stones found at Nyunmanu, the puppies will haunt your dreams until you return it to the place it belongs.

17.01.2022 Companion animals in remote communities across Australia have experienced a challenging year so far. Due to restrictions around the COVID-19 pandemic, roughly 27,500 dogs have had reduced access to veterinary services and parasite protection - some have had absences of vet services for more than 12 months. Further to this, a rare and life-threatening tick-borne disease affecting dogs, #Ehrlichiosis, was discovered in the Kimberley in May, and has since been detected in other... regions in WA, as well as throughout the NT. Together with its partners and with communities, AMRRIC has been working hard to improve health outcomes for animals in remote communities. Following the resumption of remote travel, teams of veterinary service providers have been on the road non-stop delivering veterinary services and parasite protection. To address the growing Ehrlichiosis issue, AMRRIC has secured a large quantity of parasite medication through generous support from Boehringer Ingelheim, the manufacturers of NexGard. Thanks to generous donations from supporters, AMRRIC was able to invest $20,000, together with generous discounts from Boehringer Ingelheim. This will result in almost 3000 dogs receiving NexGard a highly effective anti-parasite treatment targeting ticks, fleas and mange. AMRRIC has also had additional support from PETstock and their charitable foundation PETstock Assist in coordinating stock delivery and providing a $10,500 donation of food and enrichment products for companion animals in remote communities. Thank you so much to PETstock and Boehringer Ingelheim for their generosity in this challenging time! To read more, follow this link: https://www.australiandoglover.com//assistance-for-dogs-af

14.01.2022 Check out these gorgeous dingo pups spotted recently in Darwin! As the post suggests, it's best not to approach wild dogs and to leave them with their parents. #Dingoes #Darwin

14.01.2022 It’s national #ThreatenedSpeciesDay. Australia has an amazing and unique array of endemic #wildlife species which each fulfill incredible niches within their ecosystems, as well as being a fundamental part of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander country, cultures and lore. Sadly, many of these species are now threatened. When poorly managed or ill, pet dogs and cats can have negative impacts on native species through hunting or disease transmission. AMRRIC’s work to humane...ly and sustainably manage companion animal populations is helping to reduce these impacts by preventing the births of unwanted animals, and making sure that companion animals are healthy and not transmitting diseases to local wildlife (or people!). As animal owners, you too can help out our threatened wildlife species, by being a #ResponsiblePetOwner and ensuring your pets don’t hunt local wildlife species. You can also check out our #free #EducationalResources designed to share knowledge about responsible pet ownership. AMRRIC has lots of different resources which cater to a wide range of audiences. ‘Felt Cat’- pictured here with Yirralka Rangers Darren Gulyula from #Gapuwiyak - is just one of these resources. Last year, AMRRIC's Education Officer had the pleasure of training Darren and his team mates how to deliver school and community education sessions using AMRRIC's Felt Cat. A lesson plan and sewing pattern for Felt Cat can be freely downloaded from our resource library: https://www.amrric.org/resources/view/822/ #AMRRICEd #AssistingThreatenedSpecies #sewyourown

12.01.2022 Happy Sunday- hopefully you are jumping into the weekend like Dusty the kelpie!

11.01.2022 The AMRRIC board and staff recently joined together on Saturday 31st October for the #AnnualGeneralMeeting and strategic board meeting. This year has provided the chance for many of us to reflect on change, and for us on this day it was interesting to realise that at the same time last year we had all been together in Darwin for the same meetings, including collaborating with AIAM on a national conference, presenting our own NT local government workshops, and stakeholder eng...agement events! While this year’s AGM activities were limited to virtually hosted meetings and a small representation of staff, board and members in the Darwin office, we still packed the day full of meaningful discussion and strategizing. This year, AMRRIC farewelled Peter Stephenson, a long-serving board member of twelve years. Fellow board member and Chair Kate noted of Peter, his calm, steady, insightful leadership has been greatly valued and enabled the organisation to mature in governance and direction, and his longstanding commitment to Indigenous matters and education is well known. The AMRRIC family thanks Peter for his commitment to the organisation and wishes him well, knowing there will be many opportunities to keep in touch in the future! We also farewelled our superstar Education Officer, Courtney Falls who finished up with the team as she and her partner explore a new opportunity together taking them away from Darwin. Courtney has been with the team for over four years and has been the familiar and effervescent face of our education programs in remote communities and schools across the country during her time. The team will miss her positivity and true love and respect for education and two way learning. It was not all goodbyes though, with a warm welcome to new board member, Joanne Abraham from WA. Joanne will also be sitting on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Group for AMRRIC. Look out for an upcoming post as we will feature Joanne and give you a chance to read more about her background and interest in joining AMRRIC’s governance team! As you know, there have been a few new faces added to the team over the last year, and the team of both staff, board and advisory group are looking forward to a big year in 2021 and as usual we can’t wait to share the journey with you! #AMRRIC #TeamAMRRIC

11.01.2022 As #WorldRabiesDay comes to a close (in this part of the world at least), we are excited to share a fantastic short film, produced by our friends at Vets Beyond Borders. . The 10minute film shines a spotlight on the devastating impacts of #DogMediatedRabies globally, and features our very own Program Manager - Strategic Delivery Dr Bonny Cumming, speaking about the threat of rabies for remote Indigenous communities in Australia. . Australia is SO lucky to be free of rabies, b...ut this may not always be the case. Without good quarantine, rabies incursions into Australia are definitely possible and modelling has shown remote Indigenous communities across the #TopEnd of Australia to be at highest risk for the location of an incursion by illegal entry. . As part of our education programs and in an effort to mitigate rabies, AMRRIC raises awareness of the signs and significance of rabies, the importance of reporting unusual dog behaviour, as well as advocating to ensure that communities receive regular access to essential veterinary services. . We hope you enjoy the film - it's great to be collaborating with organisations like Vets Beyond Borders to highlight the impacts of this zoonotic disease. #OneHealth #EndRabies #ZeroBy30 #AMRRICAdvocacy

We feel very lucky to work on such beautiful #Anangu land and to be welcomed into the community!

10.01.2022 Great article in The Guardian by Sonia Smallacombe about the importance of dogs in Indigenous culture: "Australia's Indigenous culture has always had a place for dogs. They are part of our dreaming." 10.01.2022 Following an invitation from Dr Susan Kutz from the University of Calgary in Canada, AMRRIC staff Bonny, Angela, and Michelle presented to the Sahtu Vets - "One Health" team regarding education and animal data collection in remote communities. Education resources, topics, and tips were shared and both teams were interested to discuss their respective logistical difficulties faced in serving remote communities on both ends of the weather spectrum namely, the extreme cold an...d the extreme heat! Before being permitted into the remote communities of far north Canada, the Sahtu team of vets and veterinary students had to complete a 14 day quarantine. Here is a photo of the stunning sunrise view from the quarantine facilities, as well as one of the very fluffy dogs of the remote Canadian community! AMRRIC looks forward to ongoing collaboration with Dr Susan and the Sahtu Vet team and to growing the knowledge and work of One Health groups in remote communities across the world. #OneHealth #collaboration #sahtuvets #veterinarians See more

04.01.2022 Today is #WorldRabiesDay, and this year's theme is #EndRabies: #CollaborateVaccinate! . AMRRIC is excited to be collaborating with Vets Beyond Borders this World Rabies Day, helping to raise awareness of rabies and its impacts globally. Stay tuned for more about our collaboration this evening! . Rabies is a 100% preventable disease that globally, kills a person every 9 minutes. Australia is in a fortunate position to be free from rabies, but for the majority of the rest of t...he world, particularly in developing countries, rabies is a real and serious threat. In rabies-endemic countries, vaccinating both owned and free roaming dogs is essential to rabies elimination. In Australia, to help in mitigating the threat of rabies, AMRRIC works to ensure remote communities have regular access to veterinary services and to raise community awareness of rabies and dog bite prevention through our education programs. . We applaud the United Against Rabies collaboration (#WHO, #OIE, #FAO and #GARC), which plans to deliver a comprehensive, Global Strategic Plan to reach #Zeroby30 (zero rabies deaths by 2030). https://www.facebook.com/vetsbeyondborders/posts/4498152433560047?__cft__[0]=AZUnqlI83E7pDFt__YwRamWf_0a6AQ8jDN9QktyWeVsYoSV_l5ybnFln4Q2Y5bvJgFlHkWv4ZssECkZvG9e9jTmWQBtu5MT1j43INefBYjRd6sj1Yzk5d_mhDLbTdXWzvcXMNW5cIQdKd3TRsxnb08RVoZtgchlrKqY28b8gk5rGZnBgUHcQTa-TO8k7_3KY6-c&__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R
