08.01.2022 Did you hear the good news? We are officially OWL FRIENDLY! We’re declaring the region owl friendly to support the Rodenticide Action Group and its Owl Friendly campaign as well as the diverse array of wildlife that also call this region home. Why is this important?... Second-generation anti-coagulants are the most common form of rodent control products available in Australia, but are banned or strictly controlled in most other countries. It often takes days to kill animals, with many slowly dying from internal haemorrhaging. Non-target animals like native owls, our natural ally in pest control can easily consume these baits by direct of non-direct means. But there are a number of safer, more humane alternatives available that are just as effective. We’re encouraging people to make more environmentally sensitive choices and are investigating ways we can better incorporate owl friendly principles to our rodent management. To read more about what we’re doing, click here: bit.ly/38D2saF Or for more owl friendly resources, go to: owlfriendly.org.au Picture: Steve Castan

07.01.2022 Seasonal workers are vital to key industries like agriculture, tourism and hospitality, but low vacancy rates mean this important sector of the workforce might struggle to find accommodation over coming months. That’s why the Shire of Augusta Margaret River is putting in place a raft of temporary measures to support business owners, seasonal workers and the local economy as a whole. From now until 30 June, we’ll be encouraging people to consider renting out spare rooms to sea...sonal workers, fast-tracking rural worker accommodation planning applications, providing flexibility for the duration of stay in traditional tourist accommodation, and allowing the expansion of some caravan parks and nature-based camping areas to allow for overflow areas and longer-term stays. What does this mean for you? If you’ve got a spare room, consider advertising it on sites like Flatmate Finders, Gumtree and local community Facebook pages for seasonal workers; If you own a caravan park or nature-based campground, get in touch to find out if you can expand or adjust your operations to accommodate seasonal workers; If you’re looking at building rural workers accommodation, get your application in now; and If you’re a tourism accommodation provider, you’ll be permitted to accommodate seasonal workers for longer periods. Be aware, some of these changes require applications and conditions do apply, so for more information, call the planning administration team on 9780 5265 or 9780 5270.
