13.01.2022 Our annual Palm Sunday Rally has gone virtual this year, but we cannot let social distancing stop us from advocating for the health of refugees and people seeking asylum! This vulnerable population will be disproportionately affected by this crisis and needs our support more than ever. It's impossible to enact social distancing in over-crowded places, which means that COVID-19 will spread like wildfire through refugee camps and detention centres. In Australia, there have alr...eady been cases of COVID-19 inside our onshore immigration detention centres, with staff at the centres testing positive. These people seeking asylum cannot self-isolate and have limited access to hand-washing facilities. There's also a risk of spread outside of these centres through the staff. This is an unacceptable risk to both refugees and the broader community. This Sunday April 5th, we are standing to show our solidarity with refugees all around the world and call for people in immigration detention centres to be placed in community detention, which is safer for them and our whole population. Join us by posting a photo of yourself holding the banner below (or make your own) to your social media channels, or send your photo to us to post on our channels! We also encourage pooches or stuffed animals to make appearances if you don't wish to show your own face! There are some examples below for your reference! Everyone should have the right to social distancing!
12.01.2022 NEW FREE CRISIS SUPPORT AND NON-URGENT MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELLING // While we encourage all doctors and medical students to have their own GP as their first poi...nt of contact for any health problem, we know that some don’t have a regular GP, may be geographically isolated, or are reluctant for many reasons to discuss mental health concerns with others. The availability of a confidential, non-judgmental service that makes it much easier to access mental health support, particularly for those located in rural areas, is a very important step forward, particularly with the impact that the COVID-19 crisis is having on frontline healthcare workers. Australian Medical Association President and DrHS Board member, Dr Tony Bartone. Australian doctors and medical students will now have access to free, confidential telemedicine mental health services through the new Drs4Drs Telehealth Support Service. Established by the Doctors’ Health Services Limited (DrHS), this service has been co-designed for doctors and medical students. This service is completely confidential and doesn't collect identifying information. Doctors and medical students may receive up to 3 free telehealth counselling sessions, that will link you up with additional state-based Drs4Drs services to help you navigate and access further appropriate care. Accessing the Drs4Drs Support Service is simple: call 1300 374 377 (1300 DR4 DRS) OR visit http://www.drs4drs.com.au/getting-help/
12.01.2022 AMSA is excited to announce the opportunity to sign up for the AMSA Empowers Mentoring Program. The program aims to connect women with diverse life and leadership experiences both inside and outside of medicine, with other students who are eager to become female leaders but aren't quite sure where to start. This is a great place to have a discussion about coping with life, medicine and extracurriculars as well as talking about gendered experiences in medicine and the workpla...ce. This program is for everyone who would like to be involved! We are so excited to start matching mentees and mentors, make sure you get on it before it's too late!
