25.01.2022 To our wonderful clients, In light of the Premier’s and PM’s statements in the last 24 hours, I have made the decision this morning to transition all clinic appointments to phone/Skype based as of Wednesday 25th March. Although we are considered a health-based ‘essential service’, we have a duty of care to our clients, their families, our own families and our community to reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission. This decision has not come lightly, but I believe the ethical ...responsibility we have as a complimentary health clinic far out-weighs any technicality that allows us to continue in-person appointments. We need to lead by example and do our best to contribute to prevention of this issue. We are lucky enough that our appointments are easily held over phone/Skype and medicines are incredibly easy to deliver. My clinics have been servicing patients around the country and even overseas in this way for many years, we are good at it and have a well-oiled machine! No matter what happens in the next few months, there should be no reason we can’t get repeat medicines to you and be available for follow-ups. We are still accepting new patients and follow-up appointments, we now will have greater flexibility for appointment times and less waiting for you to get it! All Scoresby, Gippsland and remote patients are able to book in 9am-7pm Mon, Tues, Wed and Fri, just give us a call (0397633969) or shoot us a message!

21.01.2022 ‘Let Food Be Thy Medicine’ - Hippocrates, said over 2000 years ago It’s one of the most important things we need to do right now. Yep that’s what I said: not should, NEED. Most of my clients know I am a very lazy nutritionist at the best of times and working in multiple locations around Victoria my diet for the week needs to equally NUTRITIOUS and EASY. ... The plan of attack I’m implementing in my family for the next few months is based on 3 elements: 1. A colourful breakfast, largely focused around bright and varied fruit for their antioxidants. Antioxidants have a bazillion benefits but at the moment I want them for their protective and repairative effect on white blood cells (our immunity). 2. A decent lunch for work that every week has immune-supporting ingredients 3. An antibiotic broth or soup at dinners each night, always to be loaded high with combos of fresh and dried herbs like garlic, ginger, lemongrass, chilli, coriander, etc I’m not making these fresh every day, my motivation would wear out pretty quick smart whilst we’re still working! And we have to be mindful each week of what produce is actually available with the masses cleaning out the shops everywhere. So I’m going to share the recipes I’ve chosen every week so anyone who’d like to follow along can, or you might just spark some of your own ideas! This week just gone I chose to make up: Nectarine smoothies for breakfast they’re in season and really high in Vitamin C. I just used almond milk, nectarines, vanilla hemp protein powder, a couple of tablespoons of coconut yoghurt, cinnamon and a little bit of maple syrup (really only because I discovered my nectarines were a bit unripe and not as sweet as I would’ve liked). A satay sweet potato and red lentil curry because there was no meat left of the shelves and orange foods tend to be really high in beta-carotene, Vitamin C and Vitamin A all perfect nutrients to help immune cell creation https://thehealthyhunterblog.com//sweet-potato-peanut-and/ A Tom-Yum broth that we just drank -1 cup each night with dinner https://www.recipetineats.com/tom-yum-soup-thai/

19.01.2022 It's been a busy week! Anyone else feel like these bumblebees? https://www.sadanduseless.com/sleepy-bees/

14.01.2022 Our naturopath Kirsten put together this handy guide, just in case you get caught short this week!

14.01.2022 It takes A LOT to convince a Roman to come into work on the weekend, trust me! My lovely husband Luca helped me divide up some huge immune medicine deliveries this morning. We are working around the clock to keep both the Scoresby and Traralgon dispensaries as full as possible, as well as working on several back-up homemade medicines and immune appointment information packs for our clients. If you need help or guidance - give us a call. We can tailor an immune plan to your history, other health issues and genetic predispositions.

14.01.2022 IRON AND IMMUNITY We always think about iron as being good for oxygen and red blood cells, but low iron also contributes to lowered white blood cell production, therefore lowered immunity. It’s sometimes the reason we see ‘neutropenia’, or low levels of neutrophils in your GP’s full blood examination. If we’ve ever shown you your blood under the microscope in your appointment it’s the big bright white cells that sometimes have ‘smiley faces’!! ... These cells play a crucial role in our first response to an infection and are hugely involved in cleaning up dead cells and debris during and towards the end of the infection and mediating the right amount of inflammation. If you are low in iron, you are at increased risk of infection and may have a much slower/poorer response to it. We really want to have stored iron (ferritin) around 50 at least, going into high viral risk. But do note: if you currently have a suspected bacterial respiratory infection (eg: green/grey nasal mucous or phlegm), DON’T take iron until the mucous clears as many bacterial infections love iron as a food source.

13.01.2022 Hi everyone! I wanted to send out a message on this crazy mess of a world we’re in at the moment! I’ve been reflecting a lot on this situation these past couple of weeks and about how we at Knox Integrative can best support our clients and their families. Kirsten, Naiome and I are all on the same page: we DO NOT want to contribute to the hysteria and panic that’s taken over our society at the moment. We want our clinic families to feel empowered, supported and informed duri...ng this stressful and uncertain time. So I’ll just warn you all right now we will be posting every few days at least!! You guys know I like to talk We will be giving out a lot of information on ways we can improve our immunity and reduce stress and do these in a way that is cost-conscious and not overwhelming. So get ready we want to virtually invite you guys into our kitchens and gardens! We’ll be sharing every week EXACTLY what we are personally doing to improve our immunity (and hopefully our sanity!!) and keep our families as happy and healthy as possible. It’s crucial we all continue to follow the government guidelines on practical ways to avoid exposure to Covid-19, but that’s not all we can do. Putting your health in the best position possible for any potential issue is always a good thing. Please comment below to let us know the types of questions, topics etc that you’d like us to cover in these next few weeks. To end on a lighter note, I had to share my delightful first flower on this herb I came home to today. It really brightened me up! I wonder if anyone knows what it is? Big hugs (metaphorical only of course hehe) and lots of love to everyone, we truly are all in this together!! - Amy

11.01.2022 Thankyou to all Knox Integrative clients for your overwhelming support this year. It truly is an honor to get to do what we do in the clinic every day. Thankyou for keeping us on our toes, busy and inspired! We'll be closed until January 15th, with reception re-opening on January 6th for bookings. Wishing everyone a lovely Christmas and we can't wait to see you all again in 2020!!

08.01.2022 Eat a rainbow! A fun way to encourage kids (and fussy adults!) to eat more fruit and veggies is to aim to "eat a rainbow" every day. Different coloured plant foods contain different types of beneficial phytochemicals and nutrients, so it's important to eat a wide range every day. This app is a fun way to keep track of your daily rainbow intake. What colours have you eaten today? ... https://www.eattherainbow.app/

07.01.2022 Who said being dairy-free or gluten-free at this time of year needs to be boring? If you need some tasty treat ideas that are wholefood based, naturopath approved and still a little bit indulgent, have a look at the Wholefood Simply website. This ice-cream looks divine! https://wholefoodsimply.com/quick-and-easy-christmas-ice-c/

04.01.2022 Iron and Vitamin D: Do you have a history of nutritional deficiency? We’re getting a lot of questions on what to take for increasing immunity and this differs between each individual but one thing that doesn’t change person to person is our recommendation to address your nutritional deficiencies, RIGHT NOW. The top 2 of these I see in our patients are iron and Vitamin D. If you are currently low on these, get them into you as quickly as you can now. Please see our following... posts on each nutrient if this applies to you. Think like a war general! (Sorry is that a bit too aggressive?!?) Don’t leave your body open with known weaknesses, get on top of them as soon as you can! Your immune system is your army - FEED your army!!

03.01.2022 Does your child complain of a sore tummy when they’re in a stressful situation? Anxiety is a health issue that is becoming more common in children, with 1 in 8 children developing an anxiety disorder. One of the signs of anxiety we look out for, and see every week in the clinic, is a child complaining of a sore stomach when they’re in a situation they find stressful, like school, day-care, or being in a noisy environment.... Some of the other signs of anxiety to look out for in your child are: Constant stomach aches during stressful situations Agitation Restless behaviour Avoiding people/situations that could even slightly stress them out Meltdowns over slight issues Difficulty transitioning Extreme perfectionism Strange coping mechanisms that could be considered as self-harm (biting, scratching, pinching or even the pulling their own hair) https://awarenessact.com/children-wont-say-they-have-anxie/

02.01.2022 Edible weeds can make a delicious addition to your diet and they’re growing in abundance right at our doorstep! They are a source of vitamins and minerals, and are often higher in nutrients than shop-bought greens. Some edible weeds that you might be able to find in your backyard around the Knox and Scoresby area are: Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) One of the most nutritious plants ever tested, the leaves are high in vitamin A, vitamin K, calcium and iron. The leaves a...nd petals can be added to salads, and the roots can roasted and used as a coffee substitute. Chickweed (Stellaria media) Rich in vitamins A, B and C, and a good source of Omega 6 fatty acid. The leaves can be used as salad greens or cooked like spinach. Wild brassica (Brassica species) Wild brassica comes from the same family as broccoli and cauliflower and the leaves and flower heads can be eaten raw or cooked. They are a good source of vitamin C and A. Nettle (Urtica dioica) Nettle is has a savoury flavour and is best eaten cooked to remove the sting, but is nice in soups and tea. It is a good source of Vitamins A, C and K, as well as several B vitamins. It also contains the minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. If you’d like to learn more about safely foraging, identifying and preparing edible and medicinal weeds, our naturopath Kirsten hosts regular weed walks in the Dandenong Ranges -Hills Herbal Collective https://www.abc.net.au//edible-weeds-and-how-you-c/7406004

01.01.2022 In light of the current Coronavirus concern, we ask that all patients please be considerate when coming into our clinics. Did you know we offer phone and Skype appointments? If you are experiencing cold/flu-like symptoms, are running a temperature or are self-isolating, please call reception (03 9763 3969) to change your appointment to phone/skype or reschedule. Phone appointments can be done at your original appointment time, are the same fee and we can happily express post ...or courier any medicines. I’m sure everyone is aware of the public health advice on being hygienic which is crucial. There are many strategies we can implement in STRENGTHENING our immunity in these next few weeks as well. In particular taking care of 3 big factors: SLEEP, DIET AND STRESS. We’ve been delighted to see many families in this week simply wanting a proactive immune-supporting plan. Adding foods that have been shown to inhibit viral activity and stimulate immunity is easy; think things like garlic, onion, ginger, cinnamon, chilli. Asian medicinal mushrooms are incredibly well-researched for their immune supporting abilities and are so much easier to find even in the supermarket these days, eg: reishi and shitake. Anti-oxidative compounds in our bright coloured fruits and vegies assist immunity in many ways, including repairing damage to cell membranes. The colour of a fruit or veg is largely caused by it’s antioxidants and our human bodies love a variety of these. A bigger variety is often more beneficial than using one type of antioxidant (eg: a single-ingredient supplement) in a higher dose as they love to work as a team. Avoiding nutrient-robbing and pro-inflammatory foods is equally as important and is just common sense. It’s all the junk like white/refined sugars, breads, heavily processed foods, deep fried foods and alcohol. Nutritional supplements like B complexes, Vitamin D and zinc are also nice short-term supports depending on your individual needs. On a lighter note, we couldn’t help but share this (apologies for the language!!!! But it made us laugh).
