23.01.2022 When it comes to immune health, don't forget your gut! The gut is thought to house 70-80% of the body's immune cells, suggesting that the gut + microbiome plays a significant role in shaping immune health . HOW DOES THE GUT INFLUENCE IMMUNE HEALTH? Let's get nerdy for a second Immune tissue called the GALT (or gut-associated lymphatic tissue) is scattered all along the lining of the gut in little groups called Peyer's patches Here we find a host of immune cells rea...dy to play defence, including macrophages, dendritic cells, T cells and B cells . One way that the gut influences the immune system is the MICROBIOME A diverse + healthy microbiome helps to support and maintain a balanced immune system. Similarly, alterations in the microbiome can disrupt immune health and development (especially in early life!). . The microbiome interacts with the immune system in several ways, and most notably is thought to affect the differentiation of T cells with imbalances in these subsets playing a role in autoimmunity, allergy + more . In fact, microbiome composition is now thought to play a role in the development of several immune-driven conditions, including: Allergic or 'Atopic' conditions (e.g. eczema, asthma) Autoimmune conditions . Start supporting a healthy gut microbiome with a whole food diet, probiotic rich + fermented foods and foods rich in prebiotic fibre See more

22.01.2022 Healthy habits to manage stress If you're feeling stressed + overwhelmed at the moment, you're definitely not alone! With everything that's going on in the world right now, it's vital that we double down on stress-management (and remember that we're all in this together!) It's also important to consider that stress is well-known to affect immune function. Creating a mindfulness practice that lowers stress is a great way to support your immune + overall health now and go...ing forward! Here are just 6 proven ways to lower our stress response: Sleep: aim for ~8 hours of good quality sleep! Studies have associated sleep deprivation with elevated resting cortisol release AND exaggerated cortisol release in response to stressors. Essentially, less sleep = less likely to cope well with everyday stress Sleep better by creating an evening routine, meditating + staying away from devices! Yoga: creating a regular yoga practice (even if it's just 20 minutes with a youtube video!) is also a powerful way to manage stress. Studies suggest that a regular yoga practice can help to lower cortisol levels whilst offering a host of immune benefits Laughter: Understandably, it can be difficult to find humor in times like these. Be intentional with your media consumption and if you can, take a moment to switch off the news updates and turn on some standup comedy on netflix Laughter has been associated with decreases in blood pressure, heart rate + cortisol, and increases in serotonin Magnesium salt baths: Epsom salt baths are a great way to relieve muscular tension and stress Add 1 cup of epsom salt to a bath a few times per week! Meditation: Meditation has demonstrated a host of beneficial effects when it comes to stress, including reduced amygdala activation + increased activity of our parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS). Download the Calm app or Headspace app for access to free guided meditations Community: humans thrive on community! As most of us are self-isolating and social distancing, face-to-face interaction may not be on the cards. Instead, schedule in regular face-times with family, friends + loved ones

14.01.2022 Can probiotics boost our immune system? We've established just how important the gut + microbiome is for developing and maintaining a healthy immune system So let's talk about where probiotics fit into the mix! . Probiotic supplements contain live (or freeze-dried!) bacteria or yeasts that exert beneficial effects in the gut Generally speaking, probiotics can help to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria and positively influence the overall composition of the gu...t microbiome This raises the potential for positive flow-on effects for immune health . In saying this, it's also important to mention: not all probiotics are made equal! Probiotics have STRAIN-specific effects - with some more clearly exhibiting beneficial actions on the immune system . For example, some strains with immune supportive actions (as suggested by decreased incidence of infection in studies) may include: . Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12: reduced incidence of respiratory infections in infants, in one study. . Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG: reduced incidence of ear infections and upper respiratory infections in children, in one study. . Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716: reduced incidence of gastrointestinal and upper respiratory infections in infants, in one study. . In addition to dietary changes, choosing a good quality probiotic can be great for supporting overall + immune health Need help? I'm available for Skype and Zoom consultations See more

05.01.2022 Healthy skin starts from within When it comes to common skin complaints such as acne, conventional thinking tells us to focus on topical skincare. That with *insert magical skincare product here* we'll have a perfect complexion And whilst I'm all for a good non-tox skincare regimen, it's SO important to emphasize that the skin is often a reflection of our internal health - healthy skin truly starts from within! . In many cases this means addressing underlying factors, ...such as hormonal imbalances, sluggish detoxification pathways, blood sugar issues + gut (and skin!) dysbiosis Several nutrients are also required for healthy skin and can be attained through a nutrient-dense diet . Here's just 5 nutrients to help support healthy skin: . EFAs: anti-inflammatory essential fatty acids including EPA and DHA are important in supporting skin barrier function, with poor intake linked to transepidermal water loss (read: dry skin issues!). Best sources: salmon, sardines + cod liver oil . Zinc: this mineral plays an important role in maintaining cell integrity and aiding wound healing. Zinc may also help to reduce excess sebum production associated with acne, via antiandrogenic activity. Best sources: seafood, oysters, red meat + pumpkin seeds . Vitamin A: probably most well known through Accutane, vitamin A influences skin cell proliferation and turn over to promote skin health Note that whilst plants contain carotenoids that convert to vitamin A, the efficiency of conversion differs between individuals and may be less reliable. Including a variety of plant-based carotenoids and animal-based preformed vitamin A is key Best sources: liver (pate!), egg yolks + orange veggies! . Vitamin C: supports collagen synthesis in the skin and helps to maintain skin hydration Best sources: citrus fruits, berries, capsicum + more! . Vitamin E: has demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in the skin. Vitamin E also may help to prevent UV damage and photoaging Best sources: almonds, cashews + avocado . Focusing on a nutrient-dense diet that includes a variety of these foods is foundational for supporting healthy skin See more
