25.01.2022 What a beautiful video demonstrating baby feeding cues. What to look for: * Baby opening his/her mouth * Licking lips or poking tongue out ... * Rooting (turning head, searching, opening mouth) * Hand to mouth * Making sucking/smacking sounds *Your baby may start to squirm/move towards or even throw themselves in the direction of the breast Crying is a late sign of hunger...remember to calm baby first then feed.

24.01.2022 As some of you may already know, I embarked on the journey to become an IBCLC because of my own experiences with breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is something that I assumed would come naturally and wouldnt have to 'prepare' for. I was completely mistaken and overwhelmed with just how HARD it was when my first born arrived. By day 2 my nipples were bleeding and my baby was crying...a lot. The "latch looks fine...just keep trying" they said. So I did. Over the next few months, I ...saw child health nurses, midwives, GPs and an IBCLC. No one could help and nothing seemed to work; pumping, medication, different feeding positions, block feeding, thickening agents, colic drops....apparently I just didnt make enough milk and my baby had "reflux". I got to 7.5 months when my baby's top teeth starting erupting and the nipple damage and pain came back with a vengeance. I had deep wounds and dreaded every feed. At 9 months, I discovered a Facebook post that read "Flip the lip.... could this be the cause of your breastfeeding problems". We ticked every symptom listed. I had realised that not a single person had assessed my baby's mouth nor had they done a thorough history, observed how my baby transferred milk or performed an oral suck examination. My baby had a submucosal tongue tie and that's when I first met the marvellous Dr Marjan Jones and her team at Enhance Dentistry. Three babies later and I am still battling with breastfeeding. Each baby has had their own challenges including laryngomalacia, congenital torticollis and oral restrictions (ties). These experiences have directed my studies to focus on more complex feeding issues which have enabled me to provide comprehensive and specialised care for my clients. Everything happens for a reason and although I wish my breastfeeding journies were somewhat easier, they have led me on a life changing path. I apologise if I haven't replied to my messages and new enquiries on my business page. I have been busy with my 4 children and baby #4 (3 weeks old) has just had her ties released. Thank you for reading. Amy Deme IBCLC P.s- hopefully I can share some more of my experiences in time to come.

22.01.2022 How often do you hear...."the latch looks fine"?

20.01.2022 Credit and thanks to Michelle Emanuel from TummyTime Method An extremely effective activity I like to teach parents post tongue tie release which is also important for maintaining the diamond wound. It can also be done before tongue tie release to prepare baby’s oral cavity and nervous system. Does your baby sleep with his/her mouth open? The position of the tongue is so important- the tongue should be elevated to the hard palate, mouth is closed and lips are sealed together gently. This is optimal sleeping oral rest posture.

16.01.2022 Thank you to one of my clients for capturing one of the exercises I encourage parents to do to optimise baby's oral function. The sleeping tongue posture hold is super helpful in..... * assisting with determining optimal timing of releasing oral restrictions (tongue ties) * optimising tongue strength and mobility in preparation for release of oral restrictions. ... *jaw relaxation * facilitating correct tongue posture- tongue in contact against the palate and lips sealed. * oral sensory processing * pain-free post Frenectomy wound care (in conjunction with release providers recommendation) Credit to TummyTime Method

13.01.2022 A huge thank you to a very special client for this extremely generous and thoughtful gesture. It is very much appreciated!

12.01.2022 This is a video taken Day 5 post release of tongue, lip and buccal (cheek) ties. Please note I am doing this one-handed so baby's body is not as turned into me as possible. Some helpful points for checking positioning: 1. Chin is buried into the areola and should be first point of contact when attaching. 2. Nose is clear or just touching the breast... 3. Cheeks are rounded and touching the breast (they do not suck in) 4. Jaw action is smooth & wide, notice the slight pause in the jaw as baby swallows a mouthful of milk. A suck-swallow ratio of 1:1 in response to the "letdown" (milk ejection reflex). 5. Body is snug against mum (tummy to mummy) and hips are rotated in. 6. Notice you cannot see the lips. The "Special K" is not a thing! The top lip should be neutral- not overly flanged out and not tucked under. Improvements we have already seen by Day 5.... Wider latch Increased intra-oral vacuum Improved milk transfer increased number of "letdowns" increased maternal milk supply Longer suck-swallow-breathe cycles more active swallowing & longer feeding duration No more discomfort when feeding from right breast Reduced coughing with the milk-ejection reflex Wider mouth opening during crying and yawning What we are still working on and may take some time.... Increasing oral tone including the soft palate to help reduce reflux and nasal regurgitation. Getting a wide latch every feed and not having to shape and hold the breast the entire feed.

07.01.2022 A fairly long but worthwhile read from a family who experienced a difficult breastfeeding journey due to tongue tie. I know many of the mums I have met can relate to this. Being informed and having the right professional support is paramount to reach your breastfeeding goals. Please feel free to share your story/comments. https://www.tyrantfarms.com/our-breastfeeding-nightmare-o/

05.01.2022 If you had an issue with your plumbing....you would contact a plumber. If you had troubles with your car....you'd take it to the mechanic. If you had problems with your eyesight....you'd book an appointment with an optometrist. ... If you're experiencing feeding difficulties with your baby or toddler...you should be referred, encouraged and supported to see a qualified IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant). Just like with any trade or professional job, IBCLC's are your first point of call for infant feeding. We are qualified and experienced to assess both mother & child in determining what is causing the feeding difficulty and designing an individualised plan. We also refer to the appropriate professionals if a multidisciplinary approach to feeding is needed. It's really important to get the right help from the start! Amy Deme IBCLC
