25.01.2022 Its National Clean our your Refrigerator Day tomorrow 15 November. https://nationaldaycalendar.com/national-clean-out-your-re/ Apart from the emptying, cleaning, throwing and organising message (which feels daunting at first but so good once it’s finished!)...may I also encourage you to try making 1 home-made item every week to stock your fridge/freezer with nourishing whole food goodness?... I like to choose and make at least 1 extra thing each week to keep my fridge feeling like a place I am excited to visit. Ideas include; -mayo or aioli (100 times more delicious and healthy than store bought varieties) -pesto -tomato sauce/ketchup (I make a big batch, divide it in to glass jars and freeze extra) -chicken or vegetable stock (slow cooker works a treat, freeze extra in glass jars) -nut butter -savoury dip (I’m loving roasted beetroot at the moment with the lovely beetroots in season at the Farmers markets) -nut milk -fresh ginger concentrate (add a dash to soda to replace dry ginger ale) All you need for most of these things is a decent blender. Happy to provide recipes. Happy cleaning

23.01.2022 I made this roast beetroot and garlic soup last week -YUM!! Fresh beetroots are in season at the local Saturday Farmers markets, and are great for boosting liver health and improve circulation, as well as treating constipation and to help reduce nervousness. Taken from Sarah Brittons book ‘Naturally Nourished’.

23.01.2022 Have you ever made Sauerkraut? It’s easy to do and a fun (and a little messy) weekend activity for children. With fresh purple cabbages in season at the Albany Farmers markets (Saturday mornings 8am - noon) I thought it was time to make some again. Mine should be ready any day now. ... Sauerkraut is great to improve digestion as it promotes the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus. It is full of fibre which can decrease bloating and rich in iron to improve circulation. It can also boost immunity - see a note on this in the link below if you have the sniffles. It can also improve mood and decrease stress - as there is an intimate connection between beneficial bacteria levels in the gut and brain health. This recipe is for Sauerkraut juice - so once it has finished fermenting you will end up with fermented cabbage to have a spoonful on your plate with dinner PLUS the remaining ‘juice’ which you can drink a small amount as an immune boosting tonic. RECIPE (hit the link and scroll down) https://mailchi.mp//a-simple-menu-of-healing-foodfermented I have also attached a link so you can see what’s in season and freshly available at the markets this Saturday. See you there! ALBANY FARMERS MARKETS http://www.albanyfarmersmarket.com.au/whatson.aspx

23.01.2022 Winter has come to an end - have you had a chance to enjoy this beautiful spring sunshine? Many people are Vitamin D deficient as they do not expose their skin to a healthy amount of sunlight, and are not consuming enough Vitamin D rich foods such as fish (especially mackerel, herring and sardines), egg yolk, butter, milk and sprouted seeds. The sun is an incredible life-giving force. These days it is viewed as an environmental enemy due to the thinning of the ozone laye...r and skin cancer risk. It is still important to expose our skin to an appropriate amount of sunlight - you must have common sense around this depending on your skin type. Fairer skinned people may only be able to tolerate 2-5 minutes of direct sun exposure per day whereas others with darker skin tones may be able to work up to 15 minutes per day, 2-3 times per week. Remember where possible to expose your tummy, back, upper arms and thighs to maximise absorption. If you think you are Vitamin D deficient take care when taking a supplement that you don’t take too much, as it is a fat soluble Vitamin - so not as easily excreted out of the body like the water soluble vitamins (such as Vitamin Bs and C). Vitamin D levels can easily be tested via a blood test - contact me for a Naturopathic appointment if you would like to check your Vitamin D levels and improve mood, energy, skin health, bone health and immunity. 20.01.2022 Anyone with kids could get something out of this online course! A great way to encourage kids to learn cooking skills and increase their nutrition, while also reducing their fussiness and the family's overall stress at meal times!

20.01.2022 Have you heard of the ‘Stimulation Sedation Syndrome’? Dr Elson Haas coined the term to describe the way many people use stimulating and sedating substances (usually coffee during the day and alcohol at night) to manage their moods and energyoften resulting in fatigue and exhaustion. If this is something you struggle with to manage your busy lifestyle maybe it is time to consider looking at lifestyle measures you can change to promote natural energy and vitality.... Health is the greatest wealth, and it is important to be proactive to maintain optimal health. Do your daily food and lifestyle choices reflect this? If you would like to discuss ways to improve energy and reduce fatigue through diet, exercise, sleep, mindfulness and medicinal herbs you can book a Naturopathic consult - I have 2 more available spaces for September. Call me to have a chat if this is something you would like to consider. Amy 0423 112 342 READ MORE HERE: https://elsonhaasmd.com/what-is-stimulation-sedation-syndr/

19.01.2022 Many people in Australia are magnesium deficient...which can cause anxiety, depression, insomnia, addiction, cold hands and feet, irritability and PMS to name a few symptoms. Emotional stress also increases our demand for magnesium. Caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, diuretics and antibiotics all inhibit the absorption of magnesium.... Make sure you are getting enough magnesium in your diet with foods such as... Almonds, Barley, Cashews, Legumes, Figs, Eggs, Seeds, Parsnips, Kelp, Parsley, Spinach, Tahini, Dates, Brown rice and Sweet corn

17.01.2022 MISE-EN-PLACE (pronounced Meez ahn plahs) is a French term for the preparation of ingredients before you start cooking... The key to eating a healthy diet is mostly organisation. Try prepping mise-en-place ahead of time - even if you spend as little as 10 minutes the night before chopping up broccoli for tomorrow’s stir-fry, or putting ingredients in the slow cooker for a curry, defrosting some meat, or simply getting the ingredients ready on the bench - this makes a big... difference when you get home late/tired with no motivation to think of what to eat or start cooking a fresh meal from scratch. Yes it takes a little extra prep time but so worth it to enjoy a nourishing meal instead of grabbing something quick without many veggies and nutrition. Give it a go and see if it helps you to eat healthier!

16.01.2022 70% of Australians use some form of complementary medicine. Your right to choose this could soon be taken away. 16.01.2022 CHOCOLATE HUMMUS RECIPE - YUM!!! -1x 400g tin chickpeas no added salt -5 tablespoons raw cacao powder -5 tablespoons pure maple syrup... -3 tablespoons hulled tahini -1 teaspoon vanilla extract - teaspoon coarse sea salt Optional -1 teaspoon coffee granules to flavour -cacao nibs to garnish -toasted hazelnuts to garnish Drain the chickpeas, no need to rinse them. Add chickpeas, cacao powder, maple syrup, tahini, vanilla, sea salt and coffee if desired to a blender, and blend until smooth. Stop and scrape the sides down as you go. Transfer to a small dish or plate and enjoy as is, or sprinkle cacao nibs and toasted hazelnuts over the top to finish. This is best served with a medley of freshly prepared fruits: strawberries, cherries, blueberries, pear, watermelon, orange, kiwifruit. Store in the fridge, mix well before serving. 15.01.2022 Great advice from a herbalist in New York who was diagnosed with Covid-19. Check out her simple remedies for how she managed her symptoms at home. Below are the links she mentions in the video. The thyme, lemon and honey tea is fantastic for any type of cough or cold If you have never made chicken stock she shares a very simple slow-cooker recipe below - it’s a wonderful time to try making it. Aldertons Farming at the Saturday Farmers markets sells ethical and organic chi...cken carcasses. https://www.aldertonsfarming.com.au Yes they are more expensive than the commercial varieties, but if you consider the benefit to your health and the environment, plus the fact you can make many litres of stock with 1 carcass - it is easy to justify. After I make my first batch of stock I strain off the liquid, and then simply add more veggies, herbs, salt and water to the pot for a second and sometimes third lighter batch of stock to use in soups. Still delicious third time round! I always make sure to have some in my freezer to drink as a cup of soup if I’m feeling run down. You can also currently buy fresh shiitake mushrooms at the Farmers markets - the texture is so yummy with a delicate flavour, and very good for your immune system! If you are wondering where you can buy some of the quality, organic ingredients Andrea mentions in the video (mullein leaf, red clover, licorice root, astragalus root, thyme, schisandra berries) I will be doing an order soon, let me know if you’d like me to order you any dried herbs. Your immune system will work best to fight off any colds/flus this winter if you stay hydrated, nourished and fit throughout the year... This means getting to bed early, getting an adequate amount of sun on your skin a few times a week, prioritising time for relaxation & fun (less time on the socials helps!), cooking from scratch & eating loads of veggies, making exercise part of your routine, drinking pure water and herbal teas, minimising coffee alcohol & sugar, and laughing with loved ones. https://andreabeaman.com/thyme-lemon-honey-tea/ https://andreabeaman.com/lung-respiratory-support-infusion/ https://andreabeaman.com/simple-crock-pot-stock/ https://andreabeaman.com/classic-dashi-broth/ https://andreabeaman.com/healing-broth-shiitake-mushrooms-/ https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Id0So_Zh_k0

10.01.2022 3 WAYS TO SAVE TIME COOKING (Cooking with whole foods) 1. PLAN YOUR MEALS (try it!) -saves time... -reduces stress -less time shopping -less food waste = save money & environment -encourages a more balanced & healthy diet -make a handy list of your top 20 meals that you and your family eat regularly. When you get stuck for meal ideas come back to this list to make planning easy. Keep adding simple, one pot meal ideas to this list to keep things from getting dull 2. COOK IN BULK -time efficient -optimise your freezer to have meals ready to go -when cooking ingredients such as rice, quinoa, buckwheat, lentils, chickpeas and other beans - double or triple the quantities and then store extra in jars or containers in freezer. 3. USE 10 MINUTES WISELY -utilise 10 minutes the night before or that morning doing a little prep for dinner; *dump ingredients in slow cooker ready to go *defrost meat or other ingredients *chop veg such as broccoli & green beans and put directly into a steamer. Steamer can live in fridge until you get home *cut veg such as pumpkin or sweet potato and place on a baking tray in the fridge, ready for the oven *gather ingredients together on the bench so you’re mentally ready to go *make a frittata mixture (ie. silverbeet, zucchini, parsley, feta & cheddar, eggs) and leave in mixing bowl in fridge. This is then ready to go in a baking dish and straight in the oven when you get home For further info and recipes see this helpful article.. https://wellnourished.com.au/5-ways-to-save-time-cooking/

09.01.2022 As things are slowly easing back to ‘normal’, in WA, well done everyone for getting through this interesting time of isolation! Many families and local businesses have faced difficult challenges and yet for some it has been a time of positive blessings to go slower and focus on health and family. For me it has been both..... Special mention to all those amazing parents out there who have weathered the ups and downs of managing children at home, big respect! During this time have you created a new healthy habit... more home-cooking, exercise, a meditation practice, gardening, reading with the kids, dancing in the lounge room, or going to bed early? Or maybe you feel more stressed than ever, developed a Netflix addiction or put on a few kilos? Either way, take a moment to acknowledge where you are right now on your health journey. Are you on track to feeling fit, energetic, nourished and vibrant? If not that’s ok... you are always in control of making choices that support your health every day, and you can turn it around at any moment. Can I suggest making a cup of tea and taking 3 minutes to write down 3 healthy things you would like to achieve within the next 3 years? MY OWN PERSONAL HEALTH GOALS 1. Increasing abdominal strength 2. Meditating daily 3. Learning to love myself unconditionally (I could write 10 more, but best to keep it simple. I’d rather nail 3 things than be disappointed I didn’t achieve 10 things. Plus #3 is a doozy!) If you’re heading back to work and life is starting to get busy again, check out the link below to stock up your freezer and have ingredients ready to go to create quick/easy meals (plus minimise food waste = winning for your wallet AND the environment!) I am pleased to announce I am now taking Naturopathic and massage appointments if you need support to feel happier and healthier No doubt your plans for 2020 have been thrown off course a little or a lot.. but just remember there is still plenty of time left to reconnect with your commitment to health and vitality! 07.01.2022 LOVE YOUR LIVER Your health and vitality is largely determined by the health and vitality of your liver. Our liver is the second largest organ in the body (after the skin) and is certainly one of the most hard working.... -It is the most important organ for maintaining blood sugar levels. -It is responsible for carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism -It produces bile and secretes it to the gallbladder for storage (bile is a digestive ‘juice’ essential for the digestive process) -It is involved in the storage and metabolism of many vitamins including vitamins A, B12, D, and minerals Zinc, Iron, Copper and Magnesium -It detoxifies medications and drugs -including alcohol and caffeine -It detoxifies environmental pollutants -It inactivates hormones after they have served their function in the body Read the article below for 7 tips on how to look after your liver better. Thanks to Bioconcepts https://www.bioconcepts.com.au//Healthy_liver_and_gallblad

06.01.2022 A great article on how to reduce plastic use in the kitchen, and why you should! SPOILER ALERT: they interfere with proper hormone balance and function, plus they can make you gain weight (or at least make it difficult to lose weight). Take baby steps - start with one thing at a time, such as:... 1.Buy a keep cup so you can say no to disposable coffee cups that contain plastic (plus reduce the impact on the environment). Always keep it in your car so you don’t forget it! 2.Replace cling film with beeswax wraps, or buy glass containers to store leftovers rather than using the plastic takeaway containers. 3.Opt for tea bags with a string, or better still loose leaf tea in a teapot, as the newer nylon mesh tea bags contain microplastics. https://www.bridgitdanner.com//avoiding-toxins-plastics-in

06.01.2022 Are you drinking enough water? Water is more vital to life than food and the human body can only survive a few days without it. -Water is needed for the functioning of every cell and organ within the body... -Water is an important vehicle for ridding the body of waste products, therefore beneficial to promote clear and healthy skin -Water transports oxygen and nutrients throughout the body -A loss of 5-10% of the body’s water leads to fatigue, mental confusion and apathy -Water lubricates knees and other joints -It helps to maintain the body’s temperature within its narrow range -Water is the basis for saliva, bile and other bodily fluids -Water is the medium for all the body’s chemical reactions Aim for around 2 litres every day (more if you’re sweating and physically active). 5 TIPS TO HELP YOU DRINK MORE WATER 1. Fill your water bottle every night ready for the next day, and put it with your car keys 2. Take your water bottle with you everywhere (glass and stainless steel are best, no plastic as toxic chemicals can leach out of the plastic into the water, especially when heated such as a hot car) 3. Add delicious flavour to your water such as sliced cucumber, lemon or orange wedges, mint, kafir lime leaves or sliced strawberries 4. Sip water in the shower 5. Drink a glass after every toilet break

04.01.2022 Recipe idea for a quick mid-week meal. This corn chowder is delicious and comes together quickly. With 6 cloves of garlic, 3 onions and turmeric it is a great immune boost and liver detox support. It would also pair well if you added a seafood marinara mix.... Just remember to soak the cashews in a bowl of water in the morning. Enjoy Taken from Sarah Brittons ‘Naturally Nourished’

04.01.2022 Happy 2020 everyone and yay for the start of the new school year (routine here we come!). The last few months have seen my husband and I dedicate a lot of time and energy to opening a new business... Albany Indoor Adventures!... James has been building nature playgrounds at schools and day-care centres for a number of years now, and we were inspired to open a public venture that encourages fun, health and fitness for all ages.
