25.01.2022 Do What I Want Leadership Tips: As leaders, particularly when we are stressed or overwhelmed, our frustration can quickly go to why wont they just do what I want them to do?!?! This frustration is likely to be highly exacerbated in the current context where we have less contact and more difficult communication with our people. ... Asking ourselves some different questions can help to reduce our frustration and step in to some more helpful strategies to empower and motivate our teams. #leadershiptips #nurturingconfidencevideo #effectivecommunication #teammotivation

24.01.2022 As a Leader, the little things matter. When you choose to step up to a leadership role, people start watching you. Some days it can seem ridiculously unfair, but in putting yourself forward, others have a genuine interest in your actions the things that you do and dont do have a real lived effect on those who you lead.... Its easy in the busy-ness of leading, particularly when we live in the balancing act of middle-level leadership, to get caught in our heads and own challenges and forget the impact of the small actions that we take on those we lead. If you are constantly juggling your calendar, a ridiculous amount to fit in, even if the demands placed on your time feel out of your control, your people notice what you consistently move and postpone. If that is their 1:1 time, their team meeting or their annual review with you, their experience of that calendar juggle is that they are less important, or not valuable or important compared to your other work. Think about a leader who you worked for who was always too busy for you.how was your engagement, motivation or performance for them? 24.01.2022 The uncertainty of this year just keeps on giving. Learn how to use your communication skills to effectively lead in a rapidly changing (and changed) workplace. Checkins, patterns of working, revisit who and how we are connecting, don’t assume you know, pause/reset yourself first so you don’t pass stress on, and you and your team can be as productive as possible. #effectivecommunication #nurturingconfidence #humansfirst #communicationstrategies

22.01.2022 During rapid change, I find this a helpful communication tool to navigate difficult conversations and avoid the trap of self judgement. By taking time to be kind to self and think about our thinking, we can be more effective. This tool is not an excuse for providing poor feedback, its about saying I trust you as a human, let's look at the ways we communicate to get better outcomes." Is your impact aligning with your intention? If not, how can we change the conversation to communicate more clearly and get a different result. #effectivecommunication #nurturingconfidence #humansfirst #communicationstrategies https://buff.ly/3hjOpsi

19.01.2022 Right now as leaders we need to ride the wave of emotions for ourselves, and hold the space for our people as they ride their emotions. We cant fix it for anyone. We cant make it go away. But we can make it an experience to connect, build trust and learn from. #careerconfidence #teamresilience #effectivecommunication #nurturingconfidence #leadership #futureleaders #powerofthepause

18.01.2022 Humans First: Remember when we used to send emails instead of walking round to talk to the person a few desks away?! Wish wed got up while we could now hey?! This physical separation is leaving some of us also resisting eye contact, and not smiling at each other. ... Without these physical cues, its hard for us to feel safe amongst other humans, and difficult then for us to think clearly and problem solve with our teams remotely. How can we do Humans First in physical isolation? Be kind to yourself, and the humans around you. Embrace the value of the check in. Im seeing some teams actually build stronger relationships than they had before checking in with humans first is opening up conversations theyve never had before! If youd like some support building your skills to effectively put Humans First with your team remotely, please do get in touch and I can help you build your confidence to embrace the check in. Wed love you to let us know in the comments if this was helpful for you this week. Please share with anyone you think would benefit, and also let us know if there are specific topics or challenges youd like to hear Amy talk about. #leadershiptips #nurturingconfidencevideo

18.01.2022 The last video series proved so popular, we decided to keep the momentum going! Titled The Brave Unknown. More #leadershiptips. The re-creation of how we do things. Thinking strategically through the next phase.

18.01.2022 *Managing Upwards...* - My manager doesn’t make any sense. - They don’t know what they’re doing. - I just don’t get why they keep doing things like that.... - They just keep throwing more stuff at me, I can’t get it all done! However skilled a leader we might be lucky enough to have above us, as leaders ourselves, we need to step up to skilfully manage upwards, not just for our own mental health, but also to ensure best outcomes towards our team’s purpose. Those above us do not, and cannot, see the world the way we do. They can’t have a full understanding of the workload that we or our teams have. They can’t see the nuances and complexities that we see it takes all perspectives to create great work. As we learn to step up to take a more strategic leadership approach within our organisations, we learn to recognise the need for us to take a leadership approach in our conversations with those above us so that the flow of ideas, contributions and decision-making is a two-way, more sophisticated and more effective process than a strict hierarchical approach. Even within organisations with traditional or rigid hierarchies, this need to manage upwards still exists. The leaders above you need to hear your perspective on the challenges, on why different approaches may or may not work, on what workloads are realistic or not. Once you are in the mid-levels you are part of that decision making, strategy setting, culture creating system the work needs you to step up to managing upwards. Whether you need to push back on a micromanager above you or curtail a flighty innovator with new ideas every day asking great questions is a key skill to strategically manage upwards. 17.01.2022 The Culture of Always On using Pause to slow things down With every passing year I have more conversations with leaders who are struggling to cope with the increasing pressure of the constant pace of change and the pressure to always be on that has enveloped our workplaces. One of the impacts that I consistently notice with my clients is that the pace at which we are working is having a very real impact on the quality of work that we are contributing.... When we are all running, we are contributing to each others chaos. Our expectations on responsiveness have become so high that it feels like there is no time to think, no time to ask questions or push back on requests, because we just need to tick and flick, get it done, move on to the next demand. We are missing the opportunities in every day to lead from a place of considered thoughtfulness, contextualised in the bigger picture of our work or organisation and grounded in the real needs of the humans we work with. But in this culture where we expect each other to always be on and the demands just keep on rising, how can we create more space to deal with this busyness differently? 14.01.2022 Re-set Leadership Tips: In the last of this series of tactics, I share my thoughts on how we as Leaders can role model the emotional recharging that we want our team members to be consistently doing to perform at their best. Exploring the tiny and significant ways in which we can pause during these uncertain and overwhelming days to reset our emotions and recharge our brains so our bodies and our best thinking can keep on moving, and hopefully thriving, despite the challenge...s of the moment. We hope you have found this series of videos helpful, and would love to hear your stories on how you have used them over the past weeks. 13.01.2022 Difficult conversations are always hard, and there is no easy way or silver bullet to avoid having them. But we can learn how to navigate and be more effective in the way we communicate with people online, now that we don’t have the luxury of face to face interactions and conversations. One advantage is the ability to prepare/plan and use cue card prompts off screen. #effectivecommunication #nurturingconfidence #humansfirst #communicationstrategies https://buff.ly/3hjOpsi

13.01.2022 Their Perspective: latest video link is below Leadership Tips anyone else feeling tired at the moment? The cognitive load of trying to work and live so very differently at the moment is taking its toll on all of us. As we get increasingly weary, our space to make space for the way others see the world gets increasingly limited. ... When we take our time to ask questions, to really help to understand the perspective of those we work with - especially those we need to lead or influence - we can more effectively shape our communication in ways that they can hear it. And then take actions that are most going to help others. Who has the energy to help others at the moment?! If we dont, we are likely to simply bank problems for later. Taking a little bit longer to understand where someone is coming from now, will help clarify communication and move you all to effective action faster. Listen, really listen to understand their view rather than how it connects to your own, and notice what happens. Let us know in the comments if this helped you this week, and reach out if theres anything else youd like us to cover at this time. 11.01.2022 *Leaders are a Work in Progress...* As humans we are all works in progress. With every experience we have in life our brains are changing and adapting.... I believe that Leadership as a skillset and capacity is one that is never actually achieved. We continuously learn and improve as leaders; around every corner lies the next leadership challenge that pushes us differently, stretches different skills and challenges our assumptions in different ways. With every quality piece of leadership development work we do a great course, a great conference, a great book we can feel engaged, invigorated, ready to apply our learning and leap in to the next leadership challenge. We can also quickly lose ourselves again to habit and busyness within a remarkably short time frame of those magical insights! But no piece of learning is itself our answer to everything. Leadership is too messy, complex and ambiguous. So how do we continually develop ourselves as leaders, building on that explicit learning whilst grounding it in our lived challenges and experiences? 09.01.2022 Remote Meetings Check In: We know from teams that have a pre-COVID history of working remotely that remote check ins on a regular basis are key. If you would like me to facilitate a few check ins for your team to build your confidence and their competence in doing this well, please ...do reach out, Id be happy to help. 09.01.2022 Plan and Prepare Leadership Tips: We were running from meeting to meeting, now were lucky if we can stand up to stretch before we dive into the next Zoom Room! Our capacity to think strategically and respond rather than react in the moment as leaders is greatly enhanced when we gift ourselves space to plan and prepare before conversations. ... Thinking deeply about some simple questions to focus our thoughts, understand our intended outcomes and shape our approach, makes it easier to behave as the leaders we wish to be, in even the most challenging of meetings. Even when there is very limited time or space before jumping into the next conversation, taking any moments we can grab to explicitly plan and prepare our thoughts will improve the impact we have as leaders in these challenging times. 08.01.2022 *Context Counts* The context in which we find ourselves in each moment has a very real impact on the way our brain works and so on our behaviours as leaders, and the performance of our teams. Most of us will have worked in a context where simply walking into the building was enough to demotivate you each day!... Start paying attention to your own patterns of behaviour and those of your team. Are there particular times, physical or social contexts in which they perform better, get trapped in certain conversational cycles or react less thoughtfully than in other contexts? If you have a team that keeps repeating the same conversation in every team meeting change the context in which those meetings happen. Hold them on a different day at a different time, in a different room or a different building. It’s remarkable how something as seemingly small as the space that we are in can completely change the ways in which we think and interact. Notice when you are most productive on different types of work. 08.01.2022 When you’re managing a challenging team, navigating a complex context or leading in great uncertainty, sometimes the overwhelm just gets oh so real that we don’t know where to start. Half an hour of focused conversation can be the re-set button that helps get you unstuck. For the leaders who work with me, sometimes a quick half-hour conversation focused on unpacking the overwhelm, re-gaining perspective and finding tangible next steps, can be just what they need to get movi...ng, and lead effectively, again. At this end of the year, the need for this can be stronger than ever (especially in a year like this one!) if a quick but strategic, energising boost sounds like just the thing you need, we have a few spaces available over the coming weeks. #selfmanagement #pausetogrow #leadershiptips Book your re-set session here: [email protected]

06.01.2022 Reflect to Learn and Lead Leadership Tips: We are learning at a rapid rate at the moment as leaders, every day is bringing us a chance to - figure out something new, - try completely new ways of doing things and - work with our people in ways we may never have done before. ... Its an incredible opportunity for professional growth! But for many of us we are feeling like there is absolutely no way we have any spare capacity (practically or emotionally!) to undertake any tangible professional development. Take tiny moments for reflection, as a valuable strategy to ensure you capture and deepen the learning that you are experiencing in a sustainable way. Take tiny windows of time to pause, to quickly but intentionally ask yourself some learning questions, to give you a tangible process to ensure the learning through this is sticky. You can continue to work towards being the most effective leader that you can be for your work and your people - despite the incredible challenges of this period. https://youtu.be/ArgHMdsVor8 #leadershiptips #nurturingconfidencevideo #careerconfidence #professionaldevelopment

06.01.2022 Turn and Talk Leadership Tips (new video link below) : Grabbing learning moments when they appear, as our team members approach us for our help, is a powerful strategy for growing capacity in your people. How can we translate this to the virtual context? - Are you looking out for the moments that appear on chat, emails or text when instead of giving a quick response, you could open up a learning opportunity? ... Our people need us to continue to build trust, skills and their own development opportunity despite the challenges of the context. If we can continue to bring our attention to these moments despite physical distance, we can build resilience and capacity in our team. https://youtu.be/vp5oxrEH07M #leadershiptips #nurturingconfidencevideo #effectivecommunication #teamresilience #teambuilding #teamdevelopment

05.01.2022 Over the last few years I have been noticing a growing pattern in behaviour amongst the leaders that I work with. 04.01.2022 Choose your Channel: When we are working in complex, ambiguous contexts, it is essential as leaders that we are consistently mindful of the channels we choose to use to communicate with our teams and influence (especially upwards). - Just info? Use email. - Quick question? Text chat is great.... Judging when to shift that chat to a voice or video call is key to ensuring you minimise misinterpretations, confusion, or people jumping to inappropriate or incorrect conclusions. 03.01.2022 Hear the Praise: In times of complexity and uncertainty, our stress levels tend to sit at least a little higher than normal. For many leaders we are focused on what we need to do to keep everyone else motivated and in action towards the work we need to deliver. In this state its easier for us to hear only the complaints and criticisms, to judge ourselves consistently for that which we havent done and to miss the chance to really acknowledge our own growth and successes in... this context. These are my thoughts on a call to action to actually hear the praise that does come in your direction, and to take responsibility for being a key source of that positive feedback for yourself.
