25.01.2022 My story with SIBO part 2 I tested positive for SIBO in November last year. To say I was ecstatic would be an understatement. I had an answer and the more I researched SIBO, the more it made sense. Treatment for SIBO: I went down the natural path. I started with a very strict, low carb diet to settle my gut down. After 2 weeks I started taking herbal antimicrobial tablets to 'kill off' the bacteria living in my small intestine. Garlic tablets for methane, and berberine t...ablets for hydrogen. This course lasted 6 weeks. I was on a low carb diet as well - it resembled a low fodmap diet with a few more restrictions. This meant I could keep my tummy settled and let the herbal tablets do their work. Once the 6 weeks was up, I did another test. Results came back and I still had small traces of both bacteria but they were further down my small intestine, almost at my large intestine. I did another 6 weeks of treatment. I'm yet to do another test, my naturopath and I are focusing on getting things moving properly...I will do another test soon. If your having tummy troubles, don't ignore them. People are always raving about a happy healthy gut, eating pro and prebiotics and consuming any products that promote the health and well-being of your tummy. Well guess what, the biggest indicator of a happy, healthy gut is your poop. Yes, I said it - POOP I feel like it's frowned upon to speak about it, it's taboo or people are embarrassed to talk about it, but its so incredibly important that we do. Two books that I read and encourage you to read too are: - 'GUT' by Giulia Enders - 'The Mind Gut Connection' by Emeran Mayer Learn about about your body from the inside out. You will be blown away when you discover what happens inside us and how amazing the human body is. 24.01.2022 What style of training do you like to do? Cardio, HIIT, resistance, yoga, pilates, tabata? I find my style of training switches up depending on how I feel. I predominantly like weight based training, but I'm finding slower, more control movements are really setting my soul of fire That deep internal burn ... Move the way that makes you feel happy and alive. Not one style of training fits all so don't feel like you have to push through a cardio workout if you dread the thought of going each time! We all have different bodies, movement, goals and passions. Find something you genuinely enjoy. That way, you WANT to go to training, you want to work hard and it doesn't feel like a chore. At the end of the day, it's our consistent actions that will either see us putting on weight or muscle, or losing weight. 22.01.2022 My story with SIBO part 1 I've had gut issues for as long as I can remember. I'm opening up about a personal issue in the hope that I can help someone who is in a similar position to what I was. I know how frustrating it is, knowing there's something wrong but you can't find any answers. I had bloating, cramping, irregular bowel movements, acid reflux, fatigue and brain fog.... I saw many doctors over a course of 5-6 years and apart from getting blood tests, I was told to drink more water, exercise, eat more fibre. The usual response to my problem. I moved to Canberra 6 years ago and my symptoms got 100 times worse. I pursued and got a referral to a gastroenterologist. I was told I had a lazy bowel and if symptoms persisted, to come back. For a $400 visit, I was peeved to say the least. I went back and we did some tests including a colonoscopy. All clear. After that, I did my own research and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) was a common theme. I found a dietician who specialised in IBS and the low fodmap diet. She got me started on the diet and I instantly felt better with my bloating. It helped with some symptoms but not all. I tried Chinese medicine and acupuncture as well. I then decided to see a naturopath about my sleep because it was pretty bad. I think it was around that time I realised my stress levels were high so I started doing meditation. When I moved back home July last year I was determined to find out what was happening with my gut. I found a naturopath and we started the journey of trying to get things moving. With the symptoms I was experiencing, she decided to test me for SIBO. I tested positive for both strains. Methane dominate - causes constipation Hydrogen dominate - causes diarrhoea I have been on a long journey since with my diet, mindset, and treatment which Ill dive into in another post. Moral of this story - don't give up on yourself! If something doesn't feel right, then something isn't right. It may sound crazy but a good mindset can be the difference between setting yourself up for success or failure. So what is mindset? MINDSET is a person's way of thinking and their opinions. If you have a "fixed" mindset for example "It doesn't matter what I do, I can't lose weight" then you are likely to create this as your reality. You close yourself off from the opportunity to grow and improve. Alternatively you can choose a "growth mindset". A example of this would be "I am struggling to lose weight. What do I need to change or where can I get help so I can achieve my goals?". With the slightest change you now open yourself up to opportunities. So where is your mindset at? Are you holding yourself back from achieving your goals? Changing your mindset can be difficult but with practice it is definitely possible. Start by taking note of your inner dialog. The brain believes what we tell it. So, make sure you exercise kindness and gratitude with yourself and avoid language like; can't and impossible. You may not get it right every day but over time the results speak for themselves. 19.01.2022 What a lovely rainy Saturday What do you like to do on days like this? I'm at home, the fire is lit and I'm soaking up the sound and sight of rain. Listening to the sound of rain on the roof never gets old to me. I find it so calming, relaxing and grounding. ... It's important to have days like this where you can just stop. Stop moving your body, stop your thoughts and just listen to the sounds around you. The past has already happened and there's nothing we can do to change it... and the future is yet to come. 19.01.2022 #sweatieselfie Just finished a home workout on this fine, rainy day. As a personal trainer, I love to workout (it would be crazy if I didn't right?!). I mostly like doing weights, but every now and again I'll do a high intensity circuit. I'm constantly drawing inspiration for workouts and exercises from other people - my boss, other social media users or programs I've bought over the years. I'm constantly learning from articles, other PT's and courses.... It doesn't matter what industry you're in or how long you've been doing your job for, you can always learn something new. A new way of doing something, a new product, a new system, a new program, or a new exercise. This is also reflected in our daily lives. Soak up that information your grandparents, your mum, your dad or your boss are trying to teach you. Soak up that information you're reading or that documentary you're watching. We can never know too much, we are all constantly learning and growing in one way or another. 18.01.2022 FEAR How many times have you ignored or avoided a situation because it made you feel uneasy, nervous or scared? Hands up...me ... Like starting this Instagram/Facebook page. It took me months to get the courage to create it. I always had an excuse as to why I couldn't start it. Why? Fear of failure? Scared noone would want to hear my thoughts or stories? I have been in many situations where I didn't feel comfortable, I was nervous, scared or anxious. My last job was a challenging one, it propelled me out of my comfort zone very quickly. But you know what, I wouldn't change a thing. I grew from those situations, I stepped out of my comfort zone and out of my bubble. Don't let fear stop you from becoming who you want to be. Scared, anxious and nervousness are all just feelings that will pass. Your opportunity...how long will that last? I try to get my meals prepared for the first half of the week. I generally don't like meals sitting in the fridge all week, but that's just my personal preference! Thursday and Friday lumches are dinner leftovers. Quinoa salad and tofu this week, with rice pudding for breakfast. Planning ahead is so helpful when you're on limited time during the week. 17.01.2022 Nature. So perfect, so wild, so calming. It can be so easy to get stuck inside all day. I've done it before! Washing dishes, washing clothes, vacuum, dusting, working, study, cooking and baking. Then before you know it, it's time to start dinner, light the fire, shower and clean up. The day has flown by!... The one thing I always try and keep in the back of my mind, is to be aware and mindful of what I'm doing. Lunchtime = me time. Sit outside instead of sitting at the table, go for a quick walk or sit outside for 10 minutes just because. Soak up the fresh air, the sounds around you and the warmth from the sun. Re-energise, reboot and re-fresh your body and mind with nature. It's right on our doorstep and often gets missed. Exercise. What does that word mean to you?... Exercise to me means many different things. Exercise comes in so many forms from weight training, cardio, bike ride, walking or running, surfing or swimming. Exercise is about moving your body in a way that feels good for you - physically and mentally. The key is finding a form of exercise that you love and enjoy and that motivates you to move your body each and every day. We all have times that will test us, but it's how we choose to view and respond to those times that will shape our emotions, our state of our mind and the way our body feels internally for the rest of the day/week. It comes back to:... - lessons? Is there a lesson to be learnt here? - switching our mindset from negative to positive - finding a positive with the situation It can be hard at first. We're all programmed to automatically think negative - our flight and fight response kicks in and were getting stressed, flustered and our heart rate rises. But, the more you think positive, the easier it will become. It's about creating new thinking habits. 13.01.2022 Getting up early can be so hard some mornings. I have to use discipline and force myself out of bed...and instead of thinking of how I feel at that very moment, I think about how I will feel afterwards - energised, happy and clear headed. I draw on from past experience knowing that this moment of feeling tired will pass. I know how different my mindset will be if I don't get up now and if I fall back asleep. 11.01.2022 Snacks Bliss balls would have to be my favourite, go to snack. They are so easy to make, with minimal ingredients and they don't take long at all to put together. As I'm not eating dried fruit (i.e dates), I've been making my balls with nuts instead. ... Dry ingredients: - walnuts - almonds - or any nuts you prefer. Hazelnuts, pecans, and peanuts are delish Wet ingredients: - coconut oil - rice malt syrup/maple syrup - nut butter To get different flavours I add in: - cacao (chocolate) - cacao nibs (choc chip) - shredded coconut - protein powder - nut butter (I love the Pana spreads) Protein powders I'm using at the moment: - Vital Greens vanilla protein (fodmap and sibo friendly) - White Wolf Nutrition salted caramel superfoods (not fodmap or sibo friendly, but my belly handles it and its delicious!) The best start you can have to your day is waking up positive and setting up those good feels It can be as simple as getting excited for your breakfast, going for a walk, doing some stretches and listening to music.. If you feel stressed - sit outside with a cuppa and listen to the sounds around you. #zen I went for a walk to the beach this morning. I sat on the beach, closed my eyes and felt the warmth on my face, the smell of the ocean and the sounds of the birds. I took some deep breaths and I felt alive, centred and relaxed. On my way home, 'What a Wonderful World' by Louis Armstrong came on and I stopped and just looked at the plants, the flowers and the animals around me. 08.01.2022 Priorities What are your weekly/daily priorities when it comes to your health and well-being? Do you give yourself time each day/week to spend just on yourself? ... Making you a priority is so important. You're just as important as your partner, your kids or your family and friends. We all need that 'me time' to unwind, relax and enjoy our own company. It could be something like a workout, a walk, a beauty appt, or reading a magazine with a cuppa. Set aside a time/s each week and make yourself a priority! If you have a busy week and think, "I have no spare time"...I want you to sit down and write out every day from start to finish: - when you wake up - school runs/work - errands - dinner etc. Include times and how long it takes you to complete each activity. Now...can you see some spare time? If not, would it hurt to get up an hour earlier and make time?
