25.01.2022 Nearly there! (It’s been a productive first 5 days since we’ve hunkered down as a family) This is the first really serious personal sewing project I’ve undertaken in more than 3 years; it’s been fairly straightforward, and so lots of fun just when I needed it! It’s also the first time I’ve had a mannequin to work on, so fitting the garment on my own measurements has been really helpful and encouraging each step of the way. Lots of shots of the collar, because I’m particularly excited about it, and maybe a little bit obsessed... Can’t wait to wear it!

She had a favourite dress that was ALL the right things; the right shape, the right length, it was comfortable, practical, and, most importantly of all, it felt good to wear. But it was getting old, and worn, as favourite things do, and the search for a replacement was futile. So Paula came to me in hopes I would be able to replicate the dress... I think the outcome is evident in her smile! Paula remarked upon collecting her 2 new dresses that she felt like a child with new shoes - can I wear them home? 20.01.2022 Ahhh. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of bringing a project to completion, especially when it is a special commission for someone you know. Recently, my friend Paula came to me with a dilemma: her absolute favourite dress, a valued garment for both its comfort and practicality, was nearly at the end of its life. Some repairs had already been effected over the years, and the fabric was showing signs of wear. Paula entrusted me with the task of replicating this treasur...ed garment for her. This involved drafting a pattern from the original garment, creating a toile, fitting, adjusting the pattern and then constructing the final piece in her preferred fabric. I’m so delighted with the result of the first dress (I will be making a second). It’s such a privilege to be able to do this work; working with a client to create clothing that speaks to their personal style and projects something of who they are into the world.

19.01.2022 Some projects are a genuine labour of love that require invention, persistence and space to come to fruition. This beautiful #babydolltop was one of those. I started with a piece of fabric and a fragment of an idea, not enough time and not enough fabric, as it turned out. But I’m delighted with the outcome, and how the attention to detail has paid off. While it is a bit camouflaged against Audrey (my dressmaker’s mannequin, it is the most festive shade of red, constructed with a chiffon outer and matching polyester lining. 09.01.2022 This groovy shirt will be off to its new home tomorrow. The fabric, from #pennylanepatchwork, was a great complement to the 60s inspired design. I adapted a dress pattern to create a tunic length top, as per Penny’s request. Use of an #invisiblezipper was ideal for the uninterrupted cycling of the motif. 09.01.2022 A few years ago I had the privilege of modelling vintage clothing for Chrissy Keepence, of the Lindy Charm School, who promoted the wisdom of "Mend and Make-Do" - moving away from fast fashion by upcycling, repurposing and/or giving new life to pre-loved clothing. This, in many ways, was the inspiration behind my beginning to sew for others - I couldn't believe the number of people I knew who couldn't sew on a button, let alone take up a hem, and who would sometimes discard perfectly good clothing because it was expedient to do so in these days of fast fashion. If you love fashion as I do, but also want to do your part for environmental stewardship and sustainability, you NEED to watch this episode of Compass.
