25.01.2022 HEALTH ~ my highest value ~ my definition. When I was in Bali last year with a whole week to myself, I did a whole lot of deep thinking. When does anyone have a whole week of freedom to chill, eat, bask in the sun and think (unless maybe you're a cat?).... Anyway, what came through my long, deep thoughts was my top three values in life. Have you ever stopped to figure out what yours are? My highest value is health. No surprises there, as I always make decisions through my health lens. It has been a driving factor in keeping physically active, sourcing clean food and filtered water; even studying to be a Naturopath and Yoga instructor. To me, health is not just about 'not getting sick'. I take into account my body, emotions, mindset, environment, relationships, communication, physical aspects (skeleton, muscles, organs, and the ways they communicate). There's so many aspects to health, it's often hard to articulate an actual definition! My perception of health is possibly going to be different to yours (and that's ok). If you're open minded about health, and most of the people who follow me on social media are... There's some exciting news I want to share with you. 20.01.2022 6 degrees @ 6:30am...on a Monday morning. Insert gasp. Why on earth would I do such a thing?... I'm sure by now you've heard of the "wim hof method"? The guy who climbed Everest with shorts on (a lot of people die of hypothermia just doing base camp). He has a particular style of breathing (rhythmic hyperventilation is what it feels like to me). And that puts you in the zone to enter the cold water/ice bath. For me, my reasons for jumping in an ice bath are to do with overcoming fears. Building mental strength & discipline. But the FEELING I get on the other side of the 3 mins in the cold water? Endorphins. Better than runners high. WAY better than coffee. In fact I reckon people could kick many food addictions just by adding ice bathing as a part of their wellness strategy. Those who love the science part... The brain secretes norepinephrine (a stress hormone), dopamine (a reward hormone) & endorphins (feel good hormones) in response to the cold immersion. This actually hits the sweet spot in the neurochemistry of the brain because it helps us feel clear minded, awake, happy, and rewarded just by getting cold for a few mins! This is why I jump in first thing in the morning uncaffeinated. I've had a long history with anxiety. It pops up from time to time in different ways. Feeling overwhelmed with everyday tasks. Struggling to get motivated. Struggling to finish what I need to do (these are common ones for me, but the list is LONG for those who have anxiety). The relaxed, yet productive feeling I have after an ice bath is awesome. Those who are local to the Gold Coast and are keen to give it a go, I will be running some weekend breath and ice immersions in the coming months so keep an eye out. It may just be the thing that helps you kick a sugar or caffeine habit. And give you the energy and productivity you've been searching for .
