25.01.2022 How to support someone with an eating disorder (during a food shortage). There are many ways this pandemic can harm our emotional well-being. As an anorexia recoveree, whose life revolved around eating habits and rigid schedules, these chaotic times would have led to a downward spiral. So, how can you support a disordered eater (or yourself)? *note: every ED is different but these thoughts are based on my personal experience. ~ Acknowledge the impact: When I was in the midst ...of my ED, not being able to buy porridge oats (and the ONLY brand of oats I felt safe to eat) would have filled my whole body with fear. This isn’t the time to nonchalantly tell them, Just eat something else. See their panic as a deeper need for help. ~ Help them find alternatives: What will they feel safe to eat instead (because eating another brand of breakfast cereal is better than starving). Small steps, not big leaps! ~ Avoid the supermarket: During my ED, a trip to the supermarket could lead to pure terror at the best of times. Help them to avoid the shops by offering to buy a few specific things, BUT... ~ Don’t bulk buy for them. And if someone with an ED lives in your home, don’t store your stockpiles in a place they’ll see all the time. Huge piles of food are a trigger. . ~ Walk + talk. How would I feel if my gym shut at the height of my ED? Terrified! Again, don’t be tempted to say just don’t exercise (which in my case would have led to zero calorie intake). Suggest going for a walk or an online yoga class. Ideally use YOUR subscription so you can (kindly) limit how much they log-on. ~ It’s beyond food. Be aware, the disordered eater you love may also be spiralling about a loss of control around money, their work, their friendships. ~ Look for help! Even if a disordered eater has been in recovery for years, this might be the time to seek professional help. Beyondblue, and SANE Australia have great resources, and most doctors are offering phone consults now. . Remember, everyone’s reaction to this situation will be different because everyone’s history is different. Please share this with anyone you think it could support. Together, we heal.

24.01.2022 Two years ago I recorded the audiobook version of TE O I IE E with a newborn, whilst I had the flu (not recommended!). Swigging a husband-made mixture of rum, lemon and who-knows-what in the toilets of the recording studio to try to keep my voice alive. In hindsight, it was probably the beginning of the toughest phase of motherhood I've ever survived - but we came out the other side closer than ever! That recording has taken over two years to become available to... the public (a reminder that the 'very important' project that pushes you over your limits is probably not as urgent as you've been told it is!) But, I do trust there's a reason the audiobook has come out this month... in the midst of a period of global adversity for all of us. If, like me, you have no time for reading but would love an emotional pick-me-up, and a reminder that ' to cope with se circumstances' ... you can download the book today! With love xx https://www.hayhouse.com/the-world-is-a-nice-place-audiodow

03.01.2022 I I' Y Y OE OE I Y. This is an (uncomfortable) truth about my role as a mama that I've learnt - but try to avoid sometimes. Whether I like it or not, generally, my family's happiness level is set by my emotional wellbeing. When I'm stressed my babies react, my husband reacts, the house implodes. When I'm contented, they all reflect it... ... Simple? But also a HUGE PRESSURE - especially in a global pandemic. Which is why, in the last few years, the Happy Mama Program and podcast by Amy Taylor Kabbaz has been a god-send, and my motherhood best friend. And, why I'd shout her new offering from the rooftops - a (very, very affordable) 4-week virtual program designed to support mamas emotional and physical health during these chaotic times. I'll be tuning in as a participant, but also jumping on a LIVE CALL with everyone towards the end of the four weeks to chat trauma-healing (because, we'll all need it by then!) Want to know more?
