09.01.2022 Spread Love Everywhere you Go.. let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.. Todays work was just that.. to fill the bucket of a little Super who has so much more to deal with than little boys his age should.. Cerebellar Ataxia is a degenerative condition where over time he is losing control of his voluntary movement. This includes gait, coordination and sensation in his feet, use of his hands and fingers, tremors, some regression in speech control, swallowing ...and eye movement. This little super has in the last 12months has required the introduction of his wheelie walker and a hearing aid as well as lots of equipment and adaptation to his home and school to maintain as much independence as possible and it is so draining on his little mind and all the emotions!! Today I used my two biggest therapy tools- my supers- to fill his bucket ready to face another term at school! To remind him that a walking frame and extra time to tell us his story doesn’t make him less kind or less funny or less loved and that we are proud of him and the bravery he shows everyday despite needing a little more help along the way! The funny thing is.. 08.01.2022 This week I have been fielding a lot of questions on how we are structuring our days and making the homeschooling work alongside my Telehealth sessions. My biggest tip is providing a consistent and predictable routine. Kids and Adults alike thrive on routine and predictability in daily activities and having a schedule of events cuts out the 50 000 questions a day of what is happening next and when is lunch etc etc. Here is an example of one of our days. The top two rows a...lways stay the same however the third row can vary as this is their opportunity to pick activities from the choice board that they are able to do independently while I am on Telehealth sessions with my clients (again no one asking me what they can do or when I will be finished! ) The superhero rewards chart is to reinforce positive behaviour and non interruptions (unless their is blood, broken limbs, choking or death ) to my work sessions.. once they reach the top they get a night of Sushi, Movies and a Loungeroom slumber party (because adventures are currently limited..). 04.01.2022 Fine Motor Development doesn’t have to be boring and doesn’t have to be holding a pencil!! Just whipped up a fine motor box with visual supports for one of my little Supers to use at Preschool.. all these tasks develop fine motor skills, dexterity and visual spatial skills needed for future writing skills without using a much dreaded pencil! Visual schedules help to demonstrate the expectations of their time and they remove each activity as they complete the task and they c...an see themselves moving towards their preferred activity!
