15.01.2022 HEAT STROKE/EXHAUSTION Certain breeds/animals are predisposed: Brachycephalic (squashed face e.g. pugs etc) Young dogs that play too hard then collapse... Overweight dogs Older dogs that have trouble getting up Pocket pets (guinea pigs, rabbits etc) How to avoid it? Avoid playing/walking in the hottest part of the day. Do not walk on hot concrete/roads Dont walk some breeds at all during the heat Always have plenty of shade More than one large water bowl/bucket Iced treats: a container with water in the freezer makes extra-large ice blocks to put in the water container filled with beef stock that has been frozen Kong filled with soaked dry food then frozen keep in air conditioning on hot days pocket pets keep in the shade access to digging for dogs and rabbits dirt keeps them cool Clinical signs: Excessive, persistent panting Excessive salivation Collapse Difficulty breathing Unable to get up, laying on side Gum colour brick red or pale What to do? Move to a cooler location Offer plenty of water Hose down with water Seek veterinary attention TAKE CARE as smaller pets can lose heat very quickly if left wet. 12.01.2022 As I'm sure everyone is aware we have been advised of a catastrophic fire rating in our area for tomorrow Tuesday 12th November. Temperatures are set to soar with lots of wind and low humidity. Please ensure you have sufficient shade for all pet's with lots of fresh water!! Below is some extra info regarding what to do in a fire emgency and also some info for horse owners if a fire does occur and you need to evacuate horses from the property. Stay safe everyone!!
