24.01.2022 Who is about to have the big shave? How did you go in your fundraising fellas?

22.01.2022 Working as a Social Worker for the last seventeen years, you better believe there has been lots of times when stress has got the better of me... whether it’s a really complex case that carries high levels of risk, or stressful work environments that are full of lots of people under the same levels of stress - you find yourself doing things you swore you never would - staying back later and later, skipping lunch, surviving on caffeine and, well in my case, pressing send on ema...ils that really are way bitchier than we intended. As a #newgradsocialworker, it can be so much more stressful because a) we need to look like we know our stuff and b) we feel like a hypocrite because we talk to our clients about stress but don’t walk the talk ourselves. So one little tool that is deliciously simple that even my five year old uses it, is box breathing. It’s a perfect little technique to have in our tool box, for clients, our kids and ourselves that can really help to de-escalate our stress and anxiety especially when that old amygdala gets flooded. It can take a bit of practice and I suggest starting when you are in a calmer space, try it every day and start to train your body with the technique so that when you do need to use it your body is better prepared. Sit comfortably and upright (not slumped). As you inhale deeply, count to four slowly in your mind. After four counts, exhale deeply to the count of four, emptying your lungs. Repeat and you have completed the box. I suggest doing it for a couple of minutes or maybe 20 rounds of the box ... do you do box breathing either for yourself or your clients?? 11.01.2022 I have literally and metaphorically been this kid ... I remember once being at Sea World QLD and convinced myself I was brave enough to go on the huge water slide ... you know the ones that look like they are a vertical drop? Makes me want to hide under a doona just thinking about it! So I climbed what felt like five thousand steps to get to the summit and if it wasn’t for the fact that there were too many people climbing up behind me, I would have snuck back down and proba...bly been happy just sucking on a Paddle Pop Alas it wasn’t meant to be! I let the attendant take my hand and walk me over to the drop zone, shut my eyes, threw on my best brave face and slid ... And do you know what I remember about that? Not the exhilarating feeling of adrenalin or satisfaction or feeling like a bad arse - nope what I remember is the most enormous wedgie that felt like I’d been split in two and bared my bum in public - so uncool as a 13yo wearing her first public bikini! But I also remember thinking why isn’t anyone else getting a wedgie? So I noticed that when the girls were sliding down, they snuck their thumbs underneath to hold the swimmers in place ... So I thought I’d give it another go ... this time, with thumbs firmly in position. And THIS time I remember the exhilaration- even 25 years later I can remember it. I still love waterslides to this day - Sometimes we take a leap and the universe rewards us with a wedgie But we normally learn from it and try again. Be brave anyway #riskthewedgie
