25.01.2022 This was a surprisingly sweet video
24.01.2022 What a beauty! I was stoked to remove this Tiger Snake from a potentially dangerous location yesterday, and release him into protected bushland by a nice frog-filled lake. From a snake handler's perspective this one had the perfect temperament; grumpy enough to put on a show with that cobra-like flattened neck (this is every black snakes' first go-to warning sign, like a dog's growl); but lazy enough that he was 90% bluff and very easy to handle. Later I'll whack together a short video explaining more about these great snakes, and a little example of what can be misinterpreted as chasing behaviour, as these guys are falsely accused of it very frequently! Stay Wild!
22.01.2022 Romantic lizards elope! This mated pair of Bobtail Skinks (Tiliqua rugosa) have been frequenting my home/the street outside it for some time now! I’ve always diligently returned them to the small and bedraggled bush block down the road, for fear of separating them as the Bobtail is one of the reptile world’s very few perennially, or truly, monogamous reptiles! Many studies have been done on this topic; but as an example, one 1990 study tracking 51 females over five years f...ound that 76.5% of those were always with the same male partner, for every one of the five years during each breeding season (after months of separation, they reunite for about 6-8 weeks each year, the male following the female’s every move, before finally mating). Of those that were with different males, chances are that for several, this was due to the males passing away. So I was delighted today to find each lizard arrive at my house in the space of a few minutes. I still didn’t want to move them too far, as this would cause undue stress. That in itself is always a tricky balance to strike for us relocators between moving an animal too far from the location it was found (this is an understudied topic, but what research has been done on reptiles, e.g. our local Dugite, suggests that they do not cope well at all with being moved into completely new territory; in fact mortality rates are exceptionally high) and releasing them into areas that are too small or ecologically poor, with too high a chance of them ending up back on a road or in someone’s backyard. In the end, I decided to release my pair nearby, about 1.5km away; but in much more expansive and protected bushland, and further from any roads, homes or off-lead dogs. Given a Bobtail’s home range is usually 3-9 ha (or a circle with diameter of ~200-340m, if you’re terrible at hectares like me!) they are exploring something of a new stomping ground right now, but I’m hopeful they’ll be happy there, and stay away from these hazardous roads! Stay Wild!
22.01.2022 Tongue out Tuesday! This stunning Tiger Snake was my icing on the cake for a sneaky day off adventuring today, before it's time to knuckle down again for the new lifting of COVID restrictions! He's also the subject of my next YouTube episode, which will be out any moment now! Who else is excited?!
22.01.2022 Woohoo, it's out! This took longer than expected due to computer death, but a big bill and lots of hours later, and we're up and running again! I'm excited to have got a couple of great reptile minds to weigh in on this video - not to mention several wonderful Tiger Snakes ;) Big thanks to Steve Wilson and Simon Fearn.... Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuAKi-jCZrw
22.01.2022 So! In lieu of the latest eased restrictions, I'm able to offer my reptile party and display service once again - and better than ever! I'm now offering my services as a Face Painter and Balloon Twister too! Starting from July
21.01.2022 Cards are in for my Party branch! . With this lovely Spring Weather it's the perfect time for face painting.. Balloon Twisting.. Reptile Parties.. Games and more! . Book Now!
21.01.2022 Just a lil News Feature! Skip to 8:28 Featured briefly in a little WAMN News broadcast with the wonderful Tessa’s Reptile Removals, on women working in the reptile industry. Just being my goofy self personally hehe.... To be honest it was difficult to know what to say (of course they only aired tiny grabs of a much longer interview for both me and Tessa)... Whilst sure, I think it's safe to say all of us women who catch and relocate *VENOMOUS snakes have had plenty of sexist comments over the years, and probably the odd uncomfortable moment too; but for the most part, especially these days, there are very rarely any issues on snake relocations (and my reptile shows, and work up north for that matter) - at least in my experience. Something I strongly stated in the interview is that the main thing to me is, overall, the number of women in the reptile industry is increasing, and the rate of sexist encounters (as one who's been relocating and generally working in male dominated fields my entire adult life) are greatly decreasing over time; and these are the points to focus on! Not to mention the vast numbers of men who do offer epic support and camaraderie to us gals, with our gender never coming up as a point of difference at all. In my eyes, us womenfolk just need to keep leading by example, and the rest will sort itself out ^_^ This is always an interesting topic though - so if you have any further or different thoughts, drop them in the comments! Stay Wild! https://youtu.be/0MGz6dq1cEs
21.01.2022 Great time to find some frogs in this wet but *relatively* warm weather!
20.01.2022 To "snake people" this is an obvious one, but if you're a little less versed in the animal, it might come as a surprise! Obesity is just as unhealthy in reptiles as it is in the rest of the animal kingdom - it just looks a little different on snakes! Absolutely love Instagram posts by #AnatomikaScience
20.01.2022 I'm so stoked to have officially started filming my very first episode entirely on horseback! With the talented Rob Magos behind drone and camera, and my fellow adventure friend Sam supplying her gorgeous horses and joining on the episode herself - it's going to be jam packed with action and adventure; as well as wildlife of course! Stay Wild!
19.01.2022 On the COVID front. Many of us business owners are suffering. I've had a massive wave of cancellations in the last two days; it's extremely tough times for the gig industry. But it's necessary pain to keep the community as safe and healthy as possible! I myself am practicing social distancing, rigorous hygiene practice, and while continuing my reptile party and display service for small gatherings, do require immediate notification with free postponment of any service at any ...time if you have recently travelled, been in contact with someone who has travelled or may have COVID, or if you have any concerning symptoms. All normal last minute cancellation policies will be waived in these instances. Now I've tapped out the serious stuff - here are some cute reptile memes about current daily life! Stay Responsible, Stay Healthy, and Stay Wild!
18.01.2022 My reptiles and I are so excited to come to your event! Whether it's a reptile show & educational talk, reptiles and games for a party; or face paints and balloon twisting; we've got you covered!
17.01.2022 Happy to have another lovely show for Nearer to Nature yesterday And how good is this weather?! Pro tip to WA locals: the Perth Hills are incredibly stunning right now. Green and wildflowers everywhere; just driving to N2N was an absolute pleasure. So sad I couldn't stop for long on the drive home due to more work and a car full of reptiles (like dogs, reptiles are very prone to over heating!) - but did manage to sneak a delish takeaway lunch stop at the beautiful The Mundaring Hotel. If you haven't been, you gotta! Wander out yonder WA, it couldn't be more perfect timing for it.
17.01.2022 Someone's been shedding clues! A lovely gardener was very concerned to find an exceptionally fresh shed snake skin in his garden, right after some neighbouring shrubbery had been removed. So he called me to have a search! Happily, we found this gorgeous, fresh-skinned young Dugite jammed into a nook in his fence, trying to hide. ... Both concerned parties are now resting easy, with young Dugite released deep into some nearby bushland Pics in comments!
17.01.2022 Thank you Patrons!! Throughout my YouTube career, due to budget restrictions I've mostly used borrowed microphones or used a standard computer mic for recording my voiceover. The one USB mic I did buy a few years ago was low quality and has since stopped working. But as my last (great quality) borrowed mic recently had to be permanently returned, thanks to the donations of my patrons, I've just been able to purchase my OWN HIGH QUALITY microphone! I am beyond excited. Next o...n the list is a lapel mic for better sound while presenting! I am SO thankful
15.01.2022 I had a fantastic time at Ashdale Secondary College yesterday, presenting to the brilliant Year 12 Biology students about reptile-specific ectothermic adaptations; both in thermoregulation, and nitrogenous waste. I actually had a blast putting their slideshow together, and found some super interesting journal articles on offshoots of the topic along the way! A couple of the slides used in my talk are included below :) Stay Wild!... Ashdale Secondary College
15.01.2022 Of course this applies to all our fresh water wetlands!
14.01.2022 Did you know there are venomous frogs in the world?!
12.01.2022 Not reptiles but too good not to share -
11.01.2022 I'm often amazed how many people (young and old) at my shows don't think snakes have backbones - or ribs, a heart or lungs (well, to be fair their left lung is either missing, vestigial or just smaller than the right, which is shaped like a sausage, but still)! This gorgeous mounted skeleton shows us a snake's uniquely articulated skull, long and complex backbone, and infinite delicate ribs; which protect their organs just like ours! Stay Wild!
11.01.2022 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIlA58QeOCU I am soo happy to have completed my first ever Adventure Episode entirely on horseback! Get a rare insight into some of Perth's commonly seen wildlife; with plenty of fast-paced action, and of course some laughs too. Watch to the end - you don't want miss the blooper reel! ... Biggest thanks to Samantha and Rob for the horses, company and camera work; and my amazing patrons once again :D Stay Wild!
11.01.2022 Fantastic day yesterday, sharing my scalies and their biological wonders with the most lovely staff of Catholic Education WA! After everyone got home (there's Kimberley the Olive Python in her recently upgraded double storey mansion); I took dogs on a walk with some donkeys... Donkey Orchids that is!
11.01.2022 And it's done! I hope I'm not premature in saying this, but I do believe this is my best episode yet. Please enjoy Amy Wild Adventures: New Zealand Part II https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDQb4FgN0E0
11.01.2022 In this crazy time, I hit pause on finishing my second New Zealand episode to send out this message! Hoping this gets you a moment to learn, laugh and share! Stay Wild! ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SkANxxvpBs
10.01.2022 Have you ever had me and my scalies - or my face paints/balloons - for a party? Have I relocated a venomous snake or other reptile for you? Were you pleased with the service? If so, a review on Google would be so deeply appreciated! Just click the link below :) Thank You, and Stay Wild!
10.01.2022 With reptile weather arriving, time to get your snake relocator's list on hand! I've taken the huge list painstakingly put together by Allan from West Aussie Reptiles, up to date as of 20/08/20; and categorised it into four broad regions, so you can have a relevant list to your area ready to go: ****Please always call a relocator and don't try to capture or kill the animal! *******These are all relocators working in their own time. Prices may vary depending on the relocators....Continue reading
10.01.2022 Happy 3rd Birthday Arthur! What a wonderful warm up for my expanded party service! Arthur's mum put on the most amazing party for him, and I was delighted to paint heaps of faces (young and old hehe!) - though I admit it felt a bit strange without my reptile friends. He already has a pet snake; so we figured we'd save them for next year .... After seven years of face painting and balloon twisting through another company, it feels amazing doing it under my own name now
10.01.2022 Happy Monday! Watch this lovely Dugite's release here https://youtu.be/EgBZs58fMW0
10.01.2022 Amazing time at Regional Tafe in Northam for their fantastic NAIDOC event on Wednesday! Thanks so much to Jodi and all others who put together this fantastic day, and for having me along :) Stay Wild!
09.01.2022 Perhaps not a reptile, but this very cute mum and bub quokka were a most lovely welcome to Rottnest Island this morning for my day of running tour guides from Segway, teaching people about the island's fascinating history and ecology while showing off it's stunning scenery. Now this gorgeous day is done, time to go home and finish the power point presentation I'm putting together for some year 12 Biology students, studying ectotherms ("cold-blooded" animals) and their unique ...adaptations! I'm *so* excited for my first post-COVID school incursion Segway Tours WA . . . . . . . . . . #quokka #babyquokka #quokkajoey #rotto #rottnest #segwaytours #segway #tourguide #schoolincursion #biology #perthwa #thisisperth #cuteanimals #cute #ectotherms #coldblooded #postcovid
09.01.2022 Happy birthday Kenny! Another wonderful scaley birthday party today
08.01.2022 Fantastic scaley birthday party! I always adore watching little people (and their parents) completely fascinated and engaged with my reptiles. They even laughed at my bad jokes! Everyone got their own photo holding or touching their favourite of my reptiles too, so they can keep a little memory of their encounter, and the things they learned. Stay Wild!
08.01.2022 https://youtu.be/fUYVzWZj2kM ^ Check out the release of this stunning young Gould's Monitor (aka Goanna), who got himself stuck in a chicken coop! Always fun when you find yourself wrangling reptiles in.. Unlikely clothes
07.01.2022 Just a Rottnest Island Dugite, doing Rotto Dugite things. On this island, Dugites have been isolated in a unique habitat for so long that they are now their own subspecies. This genetically unique group (Pseudonaja affinis exilis) exists nowhere else! The most obvious physical difference to their mainland counterparts is their smaller size; they, like many other long term island inhabitants, have become subjected to island dwarfism. This individual, while relatively relaxed, has its senses on high alert - watch how rapidly his tongue flicks in and out. He is smelling which way to go!
05.01.2022 Just about the only form of work, besides YouTube that I can hope for now is fauna work - either wildlife surveys or 'fauna spotting' - wandering about land clearing equipment and rescuing all I can find! I was very lucky to get a few days of this recently - here's some snaps of what I found :) Prints available!
05.01.2022 In case you've been wondering :)
04.01.2022 Just a couple of paints I actually remembered to photograph from recent jobs!
04.01.2022 Great time yesterday at Duncraig Senior High School! Next up - off to the Pilbara to survey some reptiles and other wildlife! Back Oct 2! Stay Wild!
03.01.2022 If you're a reptile nerd like me, you get it
03.01.2022 It's International Woman's Day - for me, a reminder to all to keep doing what makes you happy and fulfills your sense of purpose; no matter what it is (provided it's not hurting anyone hehe)! Never allow "oh but I'm a this or that, I'm not supposed to enjoy/will never be able to do/would be unattractive if I tried that" to stop you from anything. We can all try out anything and everything, and we should! Never let a society's expectation hold you back; or your conditioning f...rom growing up on what type of person you "should" be. In Australia at least our society's perception of stereotypes has progressed miles, and our generation is extremely lucky; but as a particularly physically outgoing woman, I still encounter (usually unintentional or well meaning, but nonetheless) quite a bit of sexism. "You don't look like a snake catcher", "oh, I feel inadequate seeing you do that"; or "where did you learn to drive (offroading) like that?!" I was once told that I was "like a man" simply for having the profound skill of winding up rope deftly between my hand and elbow. That act required no strength, skill or danger, yet was still perceived (by another woman my own age) as completely foreign for a female to be able to do. Growing up I was totally bullied and ostracised- in the end I embraced it, foregoing playing with other kids to go hunting for animals, draw animals, or write stories about animals when not working on mandatory projects. I'm very lucky that my parents raised me to try EVERYTHING and decide myself what I enjoyed most - barbies were nice, toy cars were cool - but 90% of playtime was always spent animating my hundreds of toy animals into complex tales of adventure . I stuck with my wacky ways into adulthood; today I love dressing up to go on a coffee date, as much as getting stained black riding a horse through the dirt, spending days roaming the desert catching wild venomous things, four wheel driving, getting my hair done, training dogs, painting, doing my nails a colour that suits my mood with a favorite scented candle; researching for my next YouTube episode, having D&M's with the bestie, and making a room of kids laugh with my snakes while teaching them their wondrous ways. At home I mow the lawns, pull the weeds, catch the spiders, wash the dishes, mop the floors and polish the furniture; and will teach the BF how to use the whipper snipper one of these days It makes me really sad to think so many people have been raised to think that they could not, or should not do any of the above if they wanted to! We already have so many amazing women leading by example, setting exceptional standards; and tones of men supporting them and working alongside them too. Here's to watching that number continue to steadily grow over time! Stay Wild!
03.01.2022 Meet Shine, my latest addition!! He's a most gorgeous Black-headed Python; and as he and his sister species, the Woma Python are extra incredibly shiny, I thought it was a fitting name :) He hasn't had the easiest road so far; watch the video for more on his story! I also just got a call back from the vet about his fecal exam; he does have some worms as well, so will be picking up meds for that soon. Fingers crossed he'll be a healthy hungry snake in no time, ready to join in my shows, parties and displays! Stay Wild!
02.01.2022 Western Swamp Tortoise, Australia's Rarest Reptile. Conservationists are taking amazing steps in habitat preservation, habitat expansion and breed and release programs - thanks #PerthZoo #PerthNRM #DBCA but despite big improvements, these little beauties are still driven to critical endangerment by global warming and other factors today. Onwards and upwards, we hope! Perth Zoo PerthNRM Social Media Group
01.01.2022 When you find someone else has already written that post you've been meaning to do, and done an absolutely brilliant job of it
