22.01.2022 My kids ate chocolate muffins for breakfast this morning Now, before the wellness warriors grab their pitchforks, let’s back up a bit and hash this out a little. Firstly, they’ve got flaxseed, Greek yoghurt & zucchini in them to bump up the protein and nutrients. ... They’re also made with wholemeal flour, for some good old fashion fibre. I use just 1/4 cup of brown sugar in the mixture - which made 18 muffins so they’re pretty low on sugar per serve too. BUT, when my kids tell you, the neighbour, a stranger in the street (yep, my kids are those kids), or their teachers at daycare what they had for breakfast - they’ll probably just say chocolate muffin! Our mums the best (ok; probably not mums the best part, but wouldn’t that be nice ). They won’t tell you what’s in them or that they’re probably more nutrient dense than most breakfast cereals, or toast and a dark- Australian spread. They’ll probably forget about the porridge and orange slices they ate too, because that’s not as cool as a chocolate muffin. My point is, let’s stop the judgement of school lunchboxes, kids breakfasts and dinners. There’s a chance what you’re told or what you see isn’t exactly what you think. And you know what, even if it is a super sweet, full fat, full dairy bakery muffin that was wrapped in plastic, that’s fine too! Don’t judge a parent because you do things different. Instead, invite them over for afternoon tea & they may see what you eat & ask about it or for a recipe, or ideas. They may open up about the fact they never learnt to cook and wish they could feed their kids better and change that cycle for them. There is so much more to health than buying organic produce & green smoothies and it can start with a simple gesture to another parent of inviting them over.

21.01.2022 | Breakfast for the groms | Boiled egg on grain toast, Greek yoghurt, local honey & homemade muesli (want the recipe?) & a few wedges of tomato. Will they eat the tomato? Maybe, maybe not but it’s going on the plate. ... It’s estimated that 92% of Australians do not eat the RDI of fruits and vegetables (that statistic is even lower when its isolated to just children). It’s a scary statistic, but let’s not focus on the mentality of must force vegetables on my children. Look at the day as a whole, or better yet, the week. Offer vegetables with every meal & snack when possible. Expose them to different types of vegetables and styles of cooking/serving - my kids don’t tend to eat potato in the form of mash, yet they love boiled potato and roast potato. Offer safe options that they like next to learning to like options. If it doesn’t get eaten, don’t stress; don’t make a point of it; don’t force, don’t bribe. Just let it slide and try again another time. I’m not a fan of hiding foods - because I want them to learn to enjoy and choose vegetables and foods, but there’s no hurt in adding extra veggies to dishes either! Do your kids struggle with new foods or vegetables? Get them cooking with you! Or at one of our workshops! #nutrition #kidsandvegetables #foodexposure #sunshinecoastmums #mumlife #breakfastfood #kidsmeals

18.01.2022 || a little real talk || Last week was a pretty average week for me. It wasn’t bad, nothing extreme happened, it was just a lot of little things on top of each other that sent me into overwhelm by the end of the week. Now, I consider myself quite a strong (stubborn) person who finds showing weakness or vulnerability hard. I would much rather help, then be helped. However, last week, a couple of things happened that I want to tell you about. Someone (who I have known a w...hile), helped one of my children to the car at the park while I wrangled the other two without me asking for help. Another person (who I haven’t known for very long) took my child who was having a real wobbler of two year old meltdown, and distracted them for a few minutes until I had the patience and strength to deal with it. Someone also told me you’re a good mum. Want to know what each of these situations had in common? I wasn’t asked Do you need help? Can I help? Let me know if I can do anything for you. If I had been asked those questions, my answers would have been, I’m good, I’m fine, it’s all good, no worries even though, I could have done with the help. You see, sometimes, actions speak volumes over good intentioned offers. By no means are offers of help a bad thing, but I’ve found a lot of people (mums in particular), are a stubborn bunch who aren’t good at taking people up on the offers of help. So here’s my point, if you see someone struggling, or even if they aren’t struggling but you know it would brighten their day, just do something for them instead of offering. Let them know you’ve made a meal for them and ask when to drop it off, instead of offering to make them a meal. Just pick their kid up (if you’re familiar enough with them) and put them in the car seat if you see them being a turd to their mum & not getting in. Little actions make huge impacts. Life throws us curve balls sometimes, mum life get be tough but knowing someone’s got your back, makes it a little better in those moments. #mumlife #realtalk #sunshinecoastmumsandbubs #littleactionshugeimpacts #actionsspeaklouderthanwords #sunshinecoast

14.01.2022 || Food exposure || I won’t use nutrition jargon, but the short - simplified version is, the more someone (ie. a child) is exposed to certain foods, the more likely they will try & (hopefully) enjoy eating in time. It is not coercing, not forcing, not bribing. It is helping grow vegetables & fruits, with no expectation to eat them. It is helping at the grocery store, it is helping cook and serving up. Want a little weekend project with the kids? Start a herb and vege patch... in the garden with no pressure to eat, no nutrition facts, just observe the colours, the textures, smells... who knows, maybe they’ll taste it, maybe they won’t. It doesn’t matter either way, it’s just exposing them to foods that are just normal. #sunshinecoastmumsandbubs #spring #herbs #mint #getkidscooking

13.01.2022 I am a huge believer in letting kids learn through play, to let them just be, to have unstructured play, to be messy, to make mistakes, to experiment and to understand & learn through natural consequences. Check this little clip out..

13.01.2022 Please check your emails for those booked for this afternoons Kids Can Cook Workshop. Important information regarding the venue.

12.01.2022 || Why I am a planner || Being organised has been my thing since before I could read and write. I have photos of me doing work on my parents office desk, pretending to plan and organise their space when I am no more than 3 years old. It’s save to say, it’s in my blood. I find when I don’t plan - I get overwhelmed & anxiety skyrockets. I plan meals for three or four weeks in advance sometimes, I write lists about writing lists (yep), I plan my day’s, weeks, months and ye...ars. I don’t just make long term goals, but I plan how I will reach them. One of those goals is to enjoy evenings and dinner time with the kids. So making a plan for dinners (with a little wiggle room) allows me to be a little more relaxed when dinner time comes around. I feel more in control, I don’t have to race to the shops with three kids in tow to get things every day and because of that, I save money, waste less & eat better. Mums know, the dinner-bath-bed time is like a full days work put into 2-3 hours and the more kids you have, the more chaos it is. But by planning out meals, I can prep them earlier, and know what’s coming up and it becomes a little less chaos and a little more organised chaos and my goal of enjoying evenings with the kids is easier to achieve. Want to plan and get in control, but not sure know where to start with planning meals and a kitchen, pantry space? Check out the one on one workshop on the website. https://mamaslittlekitchen.com.au//cla/products/one-on-one

09.01.2022 No blend-no fruit-no chop bliss balls. I love bliss balls, but I kinda hate the whole blending business at the moment. Mostly because my kids fight over who presses the button & because the baby hates the sound and screams (or wakes up )... I also didn’t have any dried fruit in the house (apart from sultanas, and that’s a no from me in bliss balls). ... So I decided to just put a few things in a bowl & see how it went. It has got the tick of approval from Mr almost 4, Mr 2.5 and this mama. *Be mindful of the ages of your kids as to whether you choose not to blend* Recipe as follows... rough quantities Combine in a bowl: 1 cup almond meal | 1/2 cup sunflower kernels | 1/4 - 1/2 cup coconut | 1/4 cup chia seeds 1-2 tbsp cacao (could use cocoa or a protein powder if you had some on hand & felt the need) Melt in microwave for about 30 seconds then stir until silky smooth before adding to dry ingredients: 1/4 cup tahini 1/4 cup natural peanut butter 2 tbsp coconut oil 1-2 tbsp pure maple syrup Mix until combine, roll into balls, refrigerate & eat! #blissballs
