10.01.2022 We did a good lap of the peninsula today (or the ‘Ninch’ as the locals like to call it! - Roaring Beach was a spectacular sideline surprise where the boys did t...heir customary backsault and handstands + a bit of shotput practice ready for the athletics carnival! The Tessellated pavement was mind-boggling! How! Why! Luckily Wikipedia told us everything we needed to know! The pan formation is a series of concave depressions in the rock that typically forms beyond the edge of the seashore. This part of the pavement dries out more at low tide than the portion abutting the seashore, allowing salt crystals to develop further; the surface of the "pans" therefore erodes more quickly than the joints, resulting in increasing concavity. The last photo was the result of me saying ...c’mon just one nice photo..!! #tesselatedpavement #roaringbeachtasmanpeninsula ##hollingholiday @ Port Arthur, Tasmania, Australia See more

08.01.2022 In August of this year we emailed Sustainable Timbers Tasmania (STT) asking why Mutual Valley forest area CC160B suddenly had a new road through it, and had bee...n moved into logging plans for 2020. We were worried that there would be plans to log this forest in winter and spring, and that STT had not noticed there were signs of myrtle wilt disease in the area. We got no response from STT. Three weeks ago we found locked gates when going out to do a citizen science survey and that logging had started. This despite the Forest Practices Plan clearly stating 'The harvest area has steep slopes and will be logged under dry weather conditions only (as per FPC)' This forest and the river that runs below it is also within the Derby water catchment area. Logging of this forest started in August, winter, and is continuing as the rains continue. 50mm fell in 36 hours from Friday of last week while loggers were still in the forest. A clear breach of the Forest Practices Plan. We have submitted a breach complaint to the Forest Practice Authority, with an urgent request to halt logging and investigate these breaches. It is heartbreaking to get to know the trees and animals in a forest and then have to rake through the debris to record breaches and the destruction of Gondwanic remnant forests. It is important community driven citizen science work that we should not have to do. Help us put the spotlight on these shoddy practices by writing letters to the Examiner and Mercury letters to the editor calling for an end to native forest logging, and an end to taxpayers subsidising the destruction of our towns water sheds, climate stores and biodiversity arks. Our forests are worth more standing!
