21.01.2022 This week’s Throwback Thursday is of the gastronomic variety, as we take a look at the most delectable of delectables - the Hotty Burger. Over the decades playe...rs have recounted that the smell of onions would waft into the rooms whilst they prepared for the game. Not the ideal preparation but great advertising, with no trip to the Roo Den complete without devouring the famous burger. Before it became known as the Hotty Burger, the infamous morsel joined the Roo ranks back in 1986. Life member, past player, publican and one of VicPol’s finest, Greg Moore, purchased the original BBQ from the St Kilda CIB evidence sales where he was stationed at the time. Little did he know this would be the start of an ongoing legacy. Being one of the first clubs to sell burgers, Anakie were the talk of the football community. People would comment about ‘those Anakie hamburgers’, with game day sales well over 100 burgers a game. The burger was a truly local affair, with the eggs donated from a local chicken farmer. While this was ideal, there was the sometime issue of not knowing when you were going to get a bad egg. There was always one or two that would slip through quality control and clear the line of customers as the sulfur bomb hit the hot plate. As for the original burger patty, well they were homemade on the Friday night with a hamburger press lent from a butchers shop. In later years we got them ready made. They say the secret of the burgers success was in the combination of the patties and homemade coleslaw. Neil ‘Hotdog, Hotty’ Gillett aka The Burger King arrived at the club in 1995. He worked the hot plate like a pro and is the case with all great chefs, he didn’t mess with the menu. From time to time there was the occasional heathen who would ask for a slice of cheese on their burger. They were swifty informed that ‘these burgers don’t need cheese!!’ and sent on their way. It is from Neil that the burgers became known as Hotty Burgers, a moniker which remains today, some years after his passing. Today, Ken and Wilma Walton (Hotty’s apprentices) continue to purvey the finely cooked burgers. The Hotty Burger. An Anakie FNC tradition for over 34 years.

21.01.2022 In relation to Dan Andrews latest Q&A post - GDFNL club football and netball teams are not sanctioned to resume training as yet. Will update you all as soon as possible.

21.01.2022 GDFNL 2020 SENIOR HOME & AWAY PREMIERSHIP SEASON ANNOUNCEMENT 9 June 2020 To all members of the Geelong and District Football and Netball Community. ... It is with great disappointment that I inform you that the GDFL Executive has announced the decision to cancel the Geelong and District Football and Netball League senior football and netball competitions for season 2020. The AFL Barwon Commission supports the GDFL board’s difficult decision to cancel all senior football home & away seasons (including seniors and reserves) in the GDFNL, as well as all senior netball home & away seasons (including all senior grades). Clubs were fully supportive of dual-sport approach to the outcome of the 2020 senior football and netball Premiership seasons. After extensive consultation with government bodies, AFL Barwon, AFL Victoria, Netball Victoria and our clubs, a vote between all club presidents showed the overwhelming majority did not support a premiership season going ahead. The GDFNL will now continue to survey clubs on their desire for alternative competition models in a modified format for both senior football and netball over the coming weeks. The GDFNL also remains committed to conducting junior football competitions and junior netball modified competitions in 2020. Clubs have rightly been pushing for a decision date, and we could not have waited any longer to make a decision factoring in volunteer burden, amongst other considerations. Concerns raised by senior football and netball clubs included playing numbers, uncertainty around a clear path back to return to play, uncertainty around how to generate revenue without the opening of bar’s and canteens- including social functions, the burden placed on volunteers, the inability to effectively manage crowds to comply with the State Government restrictions, health concerns with COVID-19 and varying financial implications. For the ongoing health and sustainability of our clubs, this is the best decision for the league. I would like to thank AFL Barwon and their General Manager Will McGregor for guidance and support, as well as AFL Victoria, Netball Victoria and local councils. As President, I hope clubs can host football activities and social functions later in the year, as we all prepare for a bumper 2021. Let’s make sure we keep in touch and support one another. Neville Whitley OAM President, GDFNL

19.01.2022 This week, Throwback Thursday takes us to 2008. Club supporter Greg Stebbing collated this snapshot of the club for a Short Film Festival competition. The brief was a community minded 5 minute story. Greg chose to film Anakie FNC and its members, focusing on what the club meant to them. Unfortunately, we didn’t win the $5k 1st prize but it was a fantastic representation of our beloved Roo Den and its people. Thanks Greg! https://youtu.be/bGphSe2mlss

15.01.2022 This week, our Friday Flashback takes us to the 1940s. From 1939 until 1946, sporting activities at the Anakie Reserve were put on hold. Instead, War Welfare meetings were held in the change rooms to inform the local communities of the ever changing war time environment. As a direct result of the Second World War, players were in short supply, especially towards the end of the 40s. Keith Lowe, president and owner of one of the few motor vehicles in town, travelled throughout ...the district loading up his car to take anyone old enough to play. It was around this time that local Anakie brothers Jack and Charlie Osborne (shown in this team photo c1949) started their playing careers. Their father had played in our 1926 Premiership and a future playing at Anakie for the boys seemed inevitable. When Charlie married his sweetheart from Meredith where he moved, the brothers had notched up more than 300 games between them. Charlie went on to play another 235 games with the local Meredith football club, finishing his career with 535 games to his name. Charlie’s last game was marred when he broke his neck. Thankfully, the injury wasn’t debilitating with Charlie still alive and hungry for a kick. Jack played rough and tough throughout his career and fronted the tribunal on a number of occasions. His on-field indiscretions often left Jack pleading that he was provoked, generally resulting in him getting off lighter than his opponent. In 1967 the Club and Jack were rewarded with a Premiership, with it being one of his fondest memories. Jack’s association with Anakie FNC has spanned more than 70 years. Today, his acknowledgements include Life Membership of both Anakie Football Netball & Cricket clubs, longtime sponsor and he is one half of our No.1 Ticket holders, an honor shared with his wife, Joy. c1949 team photo; Jack Osborne playing his 300th game in 1969, where he kicked 4 goals.

15.01.2022 Get comfortable, Roo Crew, this weeks throwback is a long one as we head all the way back to the beginning. The Anakie Football Club has its origins around 15km... north of its current DeMotts Road location, in township formed through the construction of the Stony Creek Reservoir system in 1866. At the time, this was the biggest inland concrete water storage in Australia. The area was known as Durdidwarrah (Aboriginal meaning shelter of bark) and was to provide a permanent water source to the emerging colonial settlement of Geelong. The scope of works drew many workers to the area, where they would camp nearby the dam construction in the dense native bush. With the abundance of workers, the Durdidwarrah Australian Rules Football Club was formed, winning the 1914 premiership. Many of the original players were drawn from the crews working on the construction of the Stony Creek catchment system, with the team actually called Stony Creek in 1921, aka The Stony’s. The remainder of the players were itinerant timber workers, rabbiters, fencers and farm labourers. Opposition teams in the competition included Balliang, Meredith, Elaine, Lal Lal and Lethbridge, all playing in the Matheson Cup Association. On completion of the dam works, the club moved closer to the Anakie area. In 1923 and before the final move to our current location, the players used a paddock on the north side of the township opposite the old Uniting Church and current Del Rios Winery entrance. The site also had tennis courts, with the footballers runners up in the Austin Cup that year. It wasn’t until 1925 that the club moved to its current location. Up until this time, Anakie was a small village with a population of 212 (1911 census information), which had reduced considerably from 500 people in 1865 at the start of the reservoir build. Gold prospecting and timber clearing had seen the town flourish. By the early 1900s Anakie had a post office, state school and three churches (Presbyterian, Catholic and Anglican), along with a Mechanics Institute (Staughtonvale Hall). With the reservoir system nearing completion and not enough adequate land for the sale, the population reduced. In 1925 W.G. Browne - owner of the local station Narada - sold a parcel of land located on DeMotts Road for 48 ($94). Browne stipulated a No Alcohol Policy on the sale of the land which was enforced for many years, right up until the early 1970s. Trees were removed from the DeMotts Road block and grass was seeded and was resewn every year, an ongoing responsibility of the club. The rest, as they say, is history.

14.01.2022 This week, Throwback Thursday takes us back 70 years to 1950. The season kicked off in early May, with a rather different club list to the present day GDFL. Along with familiar Geelong football names in North Geelong and Lara, clubs such as Herne Hill, Freshwater Creek and Marshall rounded out the 16 round season. It was a punishing fixture, with two Anakie players injured and unable to play out the season. It was during Robert Harvey’s first match that he broke his leg when ...tackled on the uncovered cricket pitch, as it was left year round in those days. The injuries sustained by Harvey and a seperate injury to teammate John Holroyd, not only ended their seasons but also affected their work capabilities. With Player Injury Insurance unheard of, in true Anakie style the club rallied behind them both. A fundraiser was organised called ‘Subscriptions‘, where monies were raised for the injured pair through wood cutting and the like. The Subscriptions List contains the names of several Anakie families still associated with the club today. The photos below show the 1950 fixture; the Subscriptions list; and Anakie players and locals cutting wood in the Browns Road area. Many thanks to Ray Tucker for his insights into the 1950 season and providing the accompanying photographs.

08.01.2022 Throwback Thursday In late January 2006, a lightening strike at Durdidwarrah sparked fires that razed a huge area of the Brisbane Ranges National Park, located to the north of Anakie. The fires reached the township before a wind change sent it hurtlingly towards Balliang and Bacchus Marsh. The Anakie Reserve was used by emergency services as an evacuation and staging area for the many weeks the community were impacted by the fires. The oval turf was severely damaged by th...e trucks and personnel, resulting in the City of Greater Geelong upgrading the irrigation system and rejuvenating the oval to the lush standard we see today. Our push for funding to complete the Stage 2 upgrade (clubrooms, kitchen, bar, gym) is as much about providing adequate and necessary facilities for our sporting clubs as it is about providing a safe space and hub for our community. @ Anakie Fnc See more

03.01.2022 Friday Flashback Historically, the Anakie Reserve and accompanying rooms have not solely been used by the local football, cricket and tennis clubs. They have long been hired by church groups, workers clubs, schools, the rifle club and other sporting associations, especially on Sundays. Over the years, the club has worked tirelessly to finance its future with dinner dances, rabbit drives and tree cutting, which not only raised funds to operate the club but was a great s...ocial outlet for the surrounding communities. It’s a well known fact that when Anakie kicks up their heels, they mean it. In the 1960s the club had an idea to raise money by holding a Player Wedding at the local hall. This tradition of dressing up was to be a popular annual event on the clubs social calendar, with the current Miss Manakie a biennial favourite with the punters. Current restrictions have scuppered this years Miss Manakie, but we hope to have the catwalk back in action for 2021. For now though, enjoy the accompanying photos and past President Noel Tucker and past Secretary Ray Tucker reminiscing about their time at Anakie FNC. https://youtu.be/QRbcQ09k_8Q?t=2396

03.01.2022 In light of the recent changes to senior coaching for 2021, Anakie FNC would like to thank outgoing senior coach Chris Moore for his tireless efforts and contributions to our club. Chris’s history with Anakie spans many years, with his introduction to the club through watching his father Greg playing in our senior side in the 1980s. Chris followed in his fathers footsteps and went on to play for the Roos for a number of years. A handy player, he was awarded a club B&F in the... Reserves. After hanging up the boots, Chris took to coaching and found his niche, coaching our Reserves to a Grand Final. While they didn’t take the silverware home on the day, his passion and support for Anakie has always been at the fore, with Chris and his wife Rachel and the Moore family helping the club in anyway they could on and off the field. We wish Chris all best in his future endeavours and look forward seeing him cheering the red and the blue on the from the sidelines, or for a cold beer and crumbed snag at The Hotham.
