25.01.2022 OK good news and bad news. The metalwork has arrived but the bottom panels are all buckled probably due to the heat load from the laser cutting all of the slots in a contiguous order rather than staggering them across the work load to evenly distribute the heat. ::( Following it up with the supplier otherwise all of the other panels are good ;)
24.01.2022 The noise floor of the UP/2+ is only 6dB above the noise floor of the dScope III audio analyzer which is approaching -116dBu or 1.2uV RMS ! Bear in mind that unlike standard DACs we have incorporated a buffer amplifier on each balanced output to boost the output level from the output of the IV converters which will of course add some additional noise of its own. Also in the 2nd image capture below we have expanded the frequency axis from 0-1kHz to show the almost non existent mains components sitting above the noise floor which is a tribute to the balanced design.
23.01.2022 Protective top cover for the mains input board made from acrylic - straight from our CNC mill ! The two capacitors used in the DC blocker carry mains potential and it is easy to brush your hand across them and get a nasty belt from the mains as I found out the hard way :(
22.01.2022 It's a good sign when all of the on-board LEDS are on, which means that all of the on-board regulators are working. Voltages measure right on the dot too ;)
21.01.2022 This is what I call hauling the mail ! We measured a whopping 750 watts at 1kHz and 1% THD into 4 ohms from a single channel of one of the Hypex NCore amps used in our new multi-channel amplifier. This exceeds the manufacturer name plate rating of 500 watts by a huge amount ! For more detailed measurements like this see our thread on our forum at https://analog-precision.com/forum/index.php?topic=11.0
20.01.2022 Five fully assembled and tested DSP/DAC main boards ! Only another twenty to go !
19.01.2022 What better time to do some more work on the multi-channel power amp whilst waiting for the DSP boards to be assembled .Lots and lots of wiring strategically placed ;)
17.01.2022 https://analog-precision.com/forum/index.php After a hiatus we've reinstated our forum using updated forum software. Unfortunately we haven't been able to recover the previous content from our last forum. It's free to join but you will have to register first. This helps stop unnecessary spambots from filling up the forum with junk which was a regular occurrence with the last forum software we were using, even after we took measures to mitigate it :( The forum will be used as a portal to exchange information and ideas between ourselves and any or all of the members so feel free to view the latest news and product updates and to post anything regarding our products as well as anything related to active speaker projects and other diyaudio projects you consider relevant to any of the Analog-Precision products.
16.01.2022 Main DSP board is finally finished ! Off to the board assemblers on Monday to get some quotes. There have been a lot of design tweeks to get to this point, hence the delay. In particular we have done a lot of tweeks around the DAC and DAC supplies. This is critical to get right for the ES9038PRO DAC chip as the supply integrity determines the end performance in terms of noise and distortion so we are using the Esstech recommended ES9311Q low noise (1.3uV RMS) dual regulators... designed specifically for the ESS flagship ES9038PRO DAC to maximize its performance ;) ESS Technology introduces the ES9311 dual +3.3V low-noise, low-dropout regulator, designed for high-performance audio DACs, including the ESS SABRE family. Featuring a revolutionary regulator architecture, the ES9311 contains both series-voltage and shunt voltage elements and eliminates the need for output decoupling capacitors an industry first in audio system design. The design provides very low-noise outputs that are necessary for driving the reference inputs of audio converters. The ES9311 is ideal for use with high-resolution audio (HRA) converters. The ES9311 dual regulator replaces three active devices and several passive components used historically in audio system designs. Advantages for the system designer include: improved system performance, reduced bill-of-materials (BOM) and simplified design cycles for faster time-to-market.
16.01.2022 Another UP2 in the bench being tested waiting to go off to a lucky customer who lives local to us. He had been trialing a UP1 for quite sometime in anticipation of the UP2. He finally gets to evaluate it and put it through its paces ;)
15.01.2022 Wrong part can hold up production but the production house notified me asap to re-order the correct part and we are back on track ;)
13.01.2022 Green lights mean all channels are go ! What do you do in lock-down whilst waiting for the Ultimate-Preamp DSP boards to be manufactured by our production house ? Answer is to write an operating system for our multi-channel power amp. This time we are cutting code for an STM32 M3 ARM micro and not a SHARC DSP. So far everything is going to plan. Power Amp Mains Sequencing ! Main-switch and trigger-IO monitoring and relaying ! LED display driver !... Real-time Amplifier/clipping/DC error/Over-Temp-Alarm and general fault monitoring and display ! ? Thermal management fine tuning and testing phase ! The custom all stainless steel case is earmarked for a customer who along with the still to be delivered Ultimate Preamp 2/Plus (sorry for the delays) will be using it in a custom active speaker system of their own design. Using all Hypex NCore amplifier modules in a custom case that matches the Preamp we found the Hypex modules to be the ideal choice for this application with no shortage of power and performance. More to come ;)
12.01.2022 Finally, we send the Multi-Channel amplifier boards off to be fabricated and assembled by our suppliers. With no less than five custom boards of varying complexity plus the Hypex Ncore amplifier modules makes this quite an involved design. Whilst the amplifier is based on amplifier technology with a renown pedigree and reputation in the industry we have also added many useful features such as full microprocessor control, fault-monitoring and reporting. Whilst some of the features of this amp are still experimental and aimed at active speaker builds we will be looking at providing variations for 2-channel stereo and multi-channel home theater use for those that need much more power than the average home theater receiver can provide ;) PS Main UP DSP board to follow ;)
12.01.2022 Metal work finally on its way from our supplier and then it's assemble assemble assemble and then test test test !!
10.01.2022 Transformers finally arrivethed ! Still more on back order but enough to keep the assembly line going ;) We increased the power rating from 50VA to 60VA which has a bigger core and also has the added benefit of less leakage flux ;)
09.01.2022 The UPS man knocked on my door today and left me this package ;)
09.01.2022 The Ultimate-Preamp 2/+ has vanishing low levels of distortion and noise, so much so that it is approaching the limits of our dScope III audio analyzer. Even at much higher output voltages compared to your typical DAC the UP2/+ does not disappoint as shown by the following screen shots of the THD+N measurements The difference in distortion between the two channels is most likely due to the differences in the analyzer ADC and not the Preamp because reversing the channels doe...s not appear to have any effect on this ;) To get better measurements we would need access to an analyzer such as the Audio Precision APx555 which nulls out the fundamental so that it can more accurately read the harmonics from the output of the Preamp rather than the added distortion from its own ADC. However, we are not complaining about these results because it looks like all of the work we have done on the DAC and post DAC circuitry in this new Preamp has payed off See more
08.01.2022 Listening to the very thing that I am building. What better way to listen to music whilst assembling the boards that create it ;) (Silkscreen overlays missing - will be on the final versions)
07.01.2022 More testing of the AHC (Active Hum Cancellation) circuit using our high resolution audio analyzer reveals how effective it is when it is properly tuned in and calibrated. The difference between with and without the AHC switched on is about 65 dB reduction in ground loop noise ! No unbalanced RCA cable, no matter how expensive could provide such improvements to noise reduction and signal fidelity if any improvement at all ! To achieve this using audio transformers would add considerable expense not to mention additional noise and distortion and bandwidth limits and that's if we could even find room to accommodate all eight of them !
07.01.2022 How to implement a Stereo 5-way crossover on the Ultimate-Preamplifier ! Whilst waiting for the metal work to come in I decided to write a bit of DSP code to add some of the features that people have requested. With one external stereo DAC with an S/PDIF Optical or Coaxial Input you can easily add an additional two channels to the existing 8-channel line-up for a total of 10 channels of DSP processing. This saves on having to buy an additional preamp to get an extra two channels !! For more information see the thread on our forum https://analog-precision.com//stereo-5-way-crossov/msg91/
07.01.2022 Putting the new Digital Audio IO board through its paces....Lots of digital Audio IO options including additional triggering and RC options to suit the most fastidious audiophile setups ;)
05.01.2022 The main DSP board boards finally arrive ! These are partially assembled boards with the placement of nearly all of the surface mount components on both sides of the board. The assembly of the through-hole components will be our job along with extensive testing. Hopefully there are no major mistakes and all goes to plan otherwise we will end up with a pile of expensive junk :(
05.01.2022 More parts hath arriveth for zee amplifier. Can’t wait to get this sucker going nor can the client. Been a long time coming so hopefully not too much longer. Still some coding to do on the ARM micro and CPLD design to complete but what else to do during a lockdown other than code a micro ;)
03.01.2022 More Hypex goodness from the UPS delivery man today !
02.01.2022 ES9038PRO by ESSTech
01.01.2022 Freshly cut metal work waiting for finishing ;)
01.01.2022 Final-Link sub assemblies for both the UP2 (left) and UPP (right). The Final-Link sub assembly for the UPP differs from the UP2 version by incorporating an additional USB audio interface which essentially allows additional DSP functionality to be added to the preamp via external hardware. This works transparently and seamlessly as though it was part of the on-board DSP hardware. This offers scalable DSP capability without making the Preamp obsolete. Unlike other DSP based preamps the USB audio interfaces on the Ultimate Preamp are all galvanically isolated from the sensitive preamp electronics so that noise from external PC power supplies etc does not interfere with the preamp .
