18.01.2022 Glyko tou koutaliou are sweet preserves served in a spoon as a gesture of hospitality in Greece. 16.01.2022 EPIPHANY Xronia Polla to all: Fotis, Foteini, Theofanis, Theofania, Ourania, lordanis; Epiphany (also called Theofania or Fota) is celebrated on January 6 and is a day of joy and brightness, as Christians celebrate the baptism of Jesus Christ by John The Baptist.... The most important ritual is the blessing of the waters, which is performed by the Greek Orthodox priest. It’s also often held near the sea or by a lake. The priest throws a special cross into the waters and swimmers dive into the water to recover it. The one who finds the cross and returns it to the priest will be the blessed person of the year.

13.01.2022 HOLY CHURCH OF PANAGIA EVAGGELISTRIA OF TINOS - GREECE (Our Lady of Tinos) Each year, the Greek Orthodox church dedicates the first fifteen days in August to Virgin Mary. During this time, I think about one of my favourite places to visit whilst in Greece. Panagia of Tinos, a sacred place, place of spiritual pilgrimage and divine worship. Which also houses the "Miraculous Icon of Virgin Mary". Each year the island welcomes thousands of pilgrims from across Greece and neighbo...uring countries for the feast of Virgin Mary on 15 August. The ritual of travelling to pay homage to such a sacred Icon at this time is highly emotional for pilgrims, with the Holy Icon in Tinos serving as a main passage between the Virgin and the believers who seek comfort and miracles on their trip.

08.01.2022 ST JOHN THE BAPTIST The Feast of the Synaxis of Saint John The Baptist Xronia Polla to all: John, Giannis, Gianna, Prodromos, Ioanna, Jeanette. Saint John's greatest role during his life was enacted on the day of the Theophany, and because of this the Church has, from the earliest times, dedicated the day following that feast to his memory.... He was of such moral purity that he indeed deserved the name "angel" as he was named in the Holy Scriptures, rather than being thought of as just a mortal man. Saint John differs from all the other Prophets in that he had the joy of showing forth to the world the One Whom he had foretold.

02.01.2022 Thursday 27 August: St Fanourios the Martyr Today we celebrate the feast day of one of my favourite saints St Fanourios.... St Fanourios is without a doubt an important and holy youthful figure, who stands out in a particular way among the other Saints of Christianity. He is not only honoured on a single date, but the faithful often make use of the well-known Fanouropita (Fanourios Cake). The tradition of baking a Fanouropita is a great honour bestowed upon the Saint. It is typically a small round cake and is made whenever the saint reveals a lost object, a job, a cure or anything else the person has sought to find is found. We know very little about St Fanourios except that he lived during Roman Times and was in constant persecution because of his Christian beliefs. There is an icon that was discovered on the island of Rhodes during a period when the island was ruled by Turks.
