19.01.2022 It’s the weekend, and a long one if you live in Australia. If you’re heading to McLaren Vale’s newly reopened wineries stop in at @maxwellwines and enjoy our redesign of their cellar door and restaurant. It’s a good way to experience how good design ‘feels’ - architecture is an experience as much as it’s bricks and mortar. If you feel uplifted while you’re there, connected with the beautiful setting and could stay all day then my job is done. Oh... and there’s the excellent wine.

16.01.2022 Hand sketch for an upcoming addition to an Esplanade home in southern Adelaide. Our design opens up the front, frames the gulf views, creates continuous outdoor living, and smooths out the original floorplan. @littleroadstudio is taking care of the interior decorating. The aesthetic will play on the original mid-century origins of the home and the coastal setting with lots of white and natural materials, including timber and stone. #designmatters

08.01.2022 Site studies - some siting sketches for a Hindmarsh Island house. We’re looking at how the house will connect with the landscape - in this case the foreshore and lake - and weighing up a number of aspects - orientation, elevation, views, seamless outdoor connection, location of the entry, and also the economics of excavation. The sketches will be part of a design meeting with the owners. Architecture is so much more than floorplan layout - a good architect designs a total env...ironment that considers setting, climate, orientation, how the building touches the land, how it looks in the landscape, passive energy use, garden/nature connection, vehicle access, optimal entry location and easy indoor-outdoor flow. Architecture is very much a 3D or even a ‘living’ process - an exercise in understanding a location and the activities and priorities of the people who’ll live there - and responding with carefully thought out design. #designmatters #thoughtfularchitecture See more
