23.01.2022 During this time of crisis, everyone is searching for answers. Governments, healthcare institutions, non-governmental organizations and businesses - large and s...mall - urgently need to make decisions about their future. The Starschema COVID-19 Data Set as a free public resource shares real-time, analytics-ready data on the pandemic. In this on-demand webinar, Chris von Csefalvay, epidemiologist and data scientist, explains how to access the Starschema COVID-19 data set. He provides best practices for using the data, and reviews two real-world use cases: analyzing the data for easing social distancing based on U.S. federal guidelines and analyzing mobility data and business performance with google mobility data. 22.01.2022 "Tiny particles of plastic are in our food, water and even the air we breathe." Various studies have already been done to indicate genotoxicity, immunosupression and endocrine disruption with obvious implications in cancer and endometriosis.. Perhaps we should be a bit quicker to develop more natural alternatives and in the meantime stick to glass where-ever possible.

22.01.2022 Apparently 1.2 percent of the Australian population has a disabling head injury. Thanks ABS.

20.01.2022 "Although it has been revealed in recent years that plants are capable of seeing, hearing and smelling, they are still usually thought of as silent. But now, for the first time, they have been recorded making airborne sounds when stressed, which researchers say could open up a new field of precision agriculture where farmers listen for water-starved crops." 18.01.2022 "The AceMod simulator comprises over twenty-four million software agents, each with attributes of an anonymous individual, such as age, gender, occupation, susceptibility and immunity to diseases. Contact rates within different social contexts, such as households, household clusters, local neighbourhoods, schools, classrooms and workplaces are also built into the program. The set of generated agents captures average characteristics of the real population and is calibrated to ...2016 Australian Census data with respect to key demographic statistics. The interactions result in transmission of the disease from infectious to susceptible individuals: given the contact and transmission rates, the simulation computes and updates agents states over time, starting from initial infections, seeded in international airports around Australia In this scenario, 80 percent social distancing could either mean any person in one household could go out once in five days, or, one member per family of five could go out daily, but the other four stay at home all the time."

12.01.2022 "Artificial intelligence can predict a persons chances of dying within a year by looking at heart test results even when they look normal to doctors. How it does so is a mystery." 11.01.2022 Ethicists are calling on the global research community to maintain rigorous research standards when pursuing treatments and vaccines for COVID-19 as many of the early studies were poorly designed, not well justified, or reported in a biased manner.

10.01.2022 The Royal Statistical Society is currently offering some free statistical support to those who need it. #Charity_Tuesday

10.01.2022 The ABS neglects to mention that Asperger's syndrome was reclassified as "autism" in the DSM-5 and the new diagnosis was being put into practice over the same period, which would account for the majority of new cases.

04.01.2022 Based on currently reported statistics: The infection rate for SARS-Cov 2 in the UK 2.84 times lower than for Germany. Despite the 1.4 times lower population density in capital Berlin versus London, this is understandable given Germanys closer proximity to Italy, a virus hotspot. A far more troubling statistic presents itself when we look at virus related fatalities. The reported death rate for SARS 2 is currently more than 8.5 times higher in the UK than for Germany. How is... this possible when infection rate is so much lower? There are fundamental differences in the health care systems of both countries and perhaps this warrants further investigation. For further perspective, the death rate in the US is currently more than 19 times higher than that of Germany. This is particularly startling given that the infection rate per head of population is almost 4.9 times higher in Germany than the US and the number of overall cases is 19% lower in the US. See more

03.01.2022 Concise summary of the maths behind a pandemic. "If people are sufficiently worried then there's a lot less to worry about, but if no-one is worried that's when you should worry." Counter-intuitive but it's a good point.

01.01.2022 Opinion: These are not ordinary times. The tragedy of the #coronavirus pandemic is forcing us to try things and make decisions that we would never do in the normal course of affairs.
